The Last of Us Part 1 - PlayStation 5 - The Digital Foundry Tech Review

That is actually very good considering the game is 80€ in europe and a Controller is 70€.

Anyone that needs a controller (and those things aren't very good durability quality) could basically get TLOU P1 for 30€~
If you consider that this offer is coming from two of the many companies that won't sell you a PS5 without fullpriced GT7/HFW since many months, it's really a very good offer.

If that video is 50 minutes? That leaves almost nothing too see in the final game :p

After watching the full video 3 things:

- John's enthusiasm with this was clear and contagious. He had a lot of fun doing this
- He did a better job at selling me the Remake than Naughty Dog and Sony ever could.
- I'm stupid and one thing i didn't get: The 40fps mode is it similar to the one we find on Ratchet & Clank or Horizon Forbidden West?

DF posted performance review. It's pretty much 60 fps locked aside from maybe 2-3 corridors in the game.

40 fps is another story. Cutscenes and combat are in the 30s. Simply shooting your gun drops framerates to the mid 30s. They shouldve implemented a DRS here to let the game dip below native 4k for combat. Its 40-50 fps when exploring so let that be native 4k and drop to 1800p during combat.

At least LFC is in.

Yes, exactly that.

Also worth noting the confirmation that performance modes are locked 1440p. Have no idea why the Devs claimed it's "dynamic 4k". There seem to be no evidence of DRS at all.

wow...that 40fps mode looks rough. I'll try it and see if bothers me cause i really want to play this at full 4k.

Yes, exactly that.
Thank you...unfortunately, the video i quoted above shows it can't keep a stable 40fps.
I'm sure with a few updates it'll get there though.

I'm still going to try it and see if it's okay.

With a VRR set it should be fine. Without VRR overall it would offer a worse experience than the 4k30 mode from the looks of it.
My TV has VRR but it disables local dimming. So unfortunately that's not an option for me right now.
I might do the 4k and 40fps just to see if it's okay. If not, 4k 30fps...sigh...

I remember back in the day saying that the game ran poorly on PS3 and the cutscenes were pre rendered and not representative of the graphics and everyone bushed me, glad time puts everything on place.

Yes, it's the same: if you have a 120Hz tv you have the option to run it at 120Hz and 40fps instead of 30fps but with pretty visuals.
120Hz instead of 60Hz make controls a bit more responsive and fps get a third more fluid, which even if not 60fps it looks way better.

But in any case, the game plays fine at steady 30fps and was originally designed for that. If you don't care to lose some resolution then the 60fps mode is also there.

Wait, this is a debate? Why would I need to justify a 4k tv in 2022??? Without image reconstruction, native 4k vs native 1440p is very noticeable. TLOU2 is known for having very soft image because of this.
Not only that, even in the video he shows as proof you can clearly see the difference between 4k vs 1440p in a compressed 1080p video. If you actually compare in a 55+ inch 4K TV at a proper viewing distance the difference is much more magnified.

Definitely agree that there is a difference. But the difference in MOTION clarity is beyond a slight difference when comparing 60fps to 30fps. Native 4k 30fps looks great in screenshots. 1440p or even 1080p 60fps looks better in motion. Do you stare at a game that doesn't have moving pictures?

If motion and lag are like uc4 remaster then it will be fine

I initially said this looks identical to part 2. But having watched some High quality footage and compared with part 2. Both gameplay and cutscenes, this definitely looks Better. I can’t deny that. Tess Model is very realistic as well.

But is not a generational leap from part 2.

Have we had sales updates for the big exclusives this gen?

Demons souls
Ratchet and clank
Gran turismo 7
Horizon
Returnal

I'm interested if Sony have disclosed sales numbers for the big ps5 games yet and how the price tag is affecting them.
From the top or my head:
Demons Souls - 1.4 million
Ratchet and Clank 1.1 Million
Gran Turismo 7 - ?
Horizon - ?
Returnal - 560K

But keep in mind this was reported about a year ago, probably DS and R&C are already close or at 2 million. And Returnal maybe even close to 1. We haven't really heard anything from Horizon or GT7.
The other 2 games they haven't really said anything about sales are Destruction All Stars and Sackboy. Miles Morales was at around 6.5 million IIRC.
And that's pretty much every exclusive they've released so far since the PS5 released.

I've been watching a walkthrough and I'm please they seem to have corrected one of my visual grips with TLOU2, which was day light skin shaders and general detail of enemy faces, in TLOU2 they would look kind of simplistic and flat, they look far more detailed and expressive in this remake.

I completed the game this evening and briefly jumped into the left behind dlc. I hate to say it, but DF and NX Gamer really dropped the ball with their Pt.1 vs TLOU2 comparisons. There are gameplay sequences here that provide a taste of next gen. Roughly half of the real time cutscenes reach CG quality, and it probably would have been more apparent if they redid the mocap. All of this is interesting and should've been discussed. Instead in DF case, they chose to release a video discussing... whether the game needed a remake. Pathetic.

Yeah Slimy, completely ignore the increased asset and texture size gap between the different apps. And your DS comparison makes no sense. Output resolution and framerate has zero to do with load times, and the DS asset variety and quality do not compare to this remake, no matter what PC quality label you want to apply.
The comparison was using all the pc ultra settings at native 4k while targetting 60 unlike the last Gen release

There IS a 4k 40 fps mode.

But for whatever reason, the game simply does not scale well on the PS5. Even the 4k 40 fps mode dips all the way down to 32 fps and averages around 34-35 fps during combat. It's 40 locked only during exploration. Im guessing they had an engine bottleneck for the CPU. We have seen this with PC ports of Horizon and GOW which are single threaded and hold back even the most powerful GPUs, let alone PS5 equivalent GPUs like the 2080. The GOW PC port team even admitted that changing the CPU tasks to be more multithreaded wouldve required a lot more work so they left it as is. We are probably seeing something similar here.
Like I said the biggest problem with the ps5 is going zen 2 when zen 3 was right in their face and it’s gonna be the reason we will need pro models

I suspect v sync is heavy in this engine cause those same spots in the unlocked vrr mode where v sync becomes disabled run consistently better.

The FPS drops is not a CPU issue. Also, hardware is pretty much finalized with some exceptions like a year before release. Zen 3 is not some huge upgrade over Zen 2 at the same clock speeds for gaming and likely wouldn't have been worth the added cost to the consumer. Microsoft uses Zen2 as well.

Could it be because most of tlou 2 was overcast lighting vs tlou1?

Funny seeing part 1 now looking better than part 2

Imagine someone starting with part 1, being mind blown, then being like wow, how can part 2 look better? And then actually getting a downgrade lol

There isn't a full ps5 version of part 2 right? Still says PS4 when you play it on PS5?

Yeah,Part 2 just got a patch.Part 1 being on PS5, and Part 2 being on PS4 is just weird,so they are definitely releasing a PS5 version

Film grain is a bit thick in here.
There is no toggle to even turn it off in the part 2 right?
edit: you can. toggle was patched in.
Not sure if I like film grain or not

Could be, but ive watched several cases both indoor and out and the faces just look a lot better, im guessing its more detail and better quality shaders.

Fun fact, when you smash an infected head off a wall. It no longer pops like a melon.

Also seems like some of the melee moves don't proc anymore.

Agreed. The game looks slightly better than Part 2. However, definitely not a generational leap. Which is understandable as this game was more a of a side project given to a B team (https://gamingbolt.com/the-last-of-us-remake-is-reportedly-in-development-at-naughty-dog) initially.

I have no doubt Naughty Dog will release something current gen worthy before this generation closes out.

The thing that I wish they changed or gave the option to change is what Joel looks like, I wish you could use the hair style and clothing from Joel in TLOU2. Because he looks like joel from tlou1 it looks like tlou1, its hard to explain.

So . What are the chances Naughty Dog ever releases a DRS mode so we can hit something better than 1440p/60?

I'm going to say not good because stuff like that rarely ever happens but I feel like we're getting the short end of the stick, this being only 1440/60. That given the lack of massive improvements over part 2 they should've at least been able to make strides in terms of resolution.

Joel and the other supporting characters definitely look aged in the remake.
