VERGE:Phil Spencer told Sony back in January that Microsoft would keep Call of Duty on PlayStation for “several years” after current deal

I’ve always liked Phil but if this is accurate he really is full of shit. I’m sure some decisions regarding 70bn deals are beyond his pay grade but he’s out there saying the exact opposite of this over and over. I really thought they would treat this like the minecraft deal. Sony will lose serious ground in market share if COD ever goes exclusive. Guess they flew too close to the sun with all that timed exclusive shit and MS was tired of getting pushed around by a much smaller company.
They point to Minecraft as to how they will handle CoD

PlayStation fans already know how this situation feels. Being told over the past 20 years that Sony first-party games would ONLY be available on PlayStation consoles, then Jimbo comes along and blockbusters like Spiderman and GOW make their way to PC. Talk really is cheap.

See to an extent, I disagree here. I think PlayStation fans like myself who've been here since the very beginning have accepted PC ports and what they do for PlayStation. I think you'll see AMD products advertising PlayStation and other PC components. It'll make Sony develop their technology even further and to be honest it doesn't really hurt the platform. PC gamers are a resilient and head strong bunch. They'll play the games but the hardcore PC gamers, of which there are millions, won't touch consoles. I know many of them.

And this is exactly why I fucking hate the market right now. I can't afford to run two consoles, nor do I want too. But pretty soon you won't be able to play any Bethesda or Activision title on PlayStation unless it's way past it's release date and just for extra change. Minecraft too. It's ridiculous. People who think Microsoft are going to keep games and franchises coming to PlayStation are surely not seeing the play here. Microsoft have no obligation whatsoever to release Bethesda or ABK content on PlayStation if their mergers successfully close. Sony, if they want to play Microsoft's game, would have to make some huge acquisitions to really compete if the game is literally to buy the market and give it away for a monthly subscription. You can afford to do that when you make 60-80 billion a year in gross profit. I really hate gaming right now. Picking up the odd studio here and there when you're close partners and you've been that way for years I can get, but this is ridiculous. My only reprieval with Embracer is that they want to stay multiplatform and they're not for sale.

‘Right now’? it’s absolutely not a recent development for previously multiplatform games to be ‘moneyhatted’ as exclusives. Does Final Fantasy not come to mind?

It really just looks like you’re more upset because there’s the possibility of games not coming to your preferred console and less about being fundamentally opposed to corporations paying to keep multiplatform franchises off competing platforms.

I always advocate owning multiple platforms, anyway.

You should've seen the threads here when Sony's push towards the PC market that started about 2 years ago was revealed. Lets just say the majority of long-time PlayStation faithful did not welcome that news with open arms :messenger_tears_of_joy:

This is peak gaming CEO.

You may not like it, but accept it.
0 games in 2022 + threatening to take away multi platform games from PlayStation in a couple of years = peak gaming CEO.

Peak gaming personality is actually someone like Furukawa who actually gets top class games out every single year without fail without needing to do an interview every 20 seconds.

How is that gangsta as shit you muppet? :messenger_tears_of_joy:

The mask has slipped for a lot of posters now and whilst originally it was all ‘yeah man Xbox is so chill of course they will publish CoD on PS forever Xbox is all about options only Sony cares about muh exclusivity’ and now you’re getting a stiffy over depriving PS players of a multi platform game?

It would be hilarious if you weren’t actually cheering on a mega coorperation. You a wanksta.
I'm curious. They're supposed to spend billions on this shit and then give them to their competition? It's business, they bought the company that makes COD, hence COD becomes their property. IF it was or not a multiplatform game doesn't matter after the deal is done. Same thing if Sony bought From Software for example and Dark Souls went exclusive.

You need to stop being mad that Xbox is making moves you don't like. You'll enjoy gaming more. Trust me. There is a reason I support all consoles. Try doing the same and stop being such a warrior upset with my opinion and move on. That's what I'm doing by choosing to no longer respond to you or anyone else who has a problem with what I already said. I said what I said.
I'm not upset, I'm genuinely intrigued by your posts. I've never seen this level that someone goes to defend a brand/product.

And yes I serously think you could put aaron greenburger out of a job.

You can’t play everything man. Its the same with all the TV streaming services. You can’t watch them all.

My stance is that the studios accepting the money and deal must find enough value in it to accept it. MS could have the same terms (as we have seen in the past) but it appears they aren’t sending enough money or the studios don’t see the value in being Xbox exclusive.
Xbox just isn't practicing that strategy anymore. Phil has too much respect for gamers.

Yeah, I think that some people are just building their own fucking narrative around the deal and whether or not Sony will still have access to Call of Duty. Phil said that Call of Duty would remain on PlayStation ages ago. No reason to believe this will change moving forward for the next few years.

They point to Minecraft as to how they will handle CoD
You're naive if you think that's true.

Minecraft is a children's game, the optics of pulling it would be disastrous.

I've said it before and I'll say it again in my very strong opinion, warzone (including future versions) will remain on playstation in perpetuity, the next couple of mainline entries will come to playstation, with the first exclusive coming the first next gen release, maybe something like xbox series xyz, but only a ps5 release to ease in.

Mainline entries will have unlockable bonuses for warzone, enticing users to switch over, starting at the tail end of this generation.

Of course a lot can happen in that time, like sony developing a legitimate war fps contender, forcing cod to stay, but as it stands, cod was never going to be exclusive in perpetuity.

This is satire right? I'm a few drinks deep so I honestly can't tell.

Either way, Phil is held to fiduciary standards, maybe he has respect for gamers, but his actions reflect what will earn Microsoft the most money, not the most fan service, unless that fan service leads to money (see: gamepass)

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
It’s funny that Phil can only commit to a few more years

Wasn’t he running his mouth about exclusives not being a thing anymore and how he doesn’t want to close off gamers or some shit?

If he believed his own bullshit he’d come out and say CoD is on PS forever like Sony did with Bungie

Can you please share where Sony said Bungie stuff will be on Xbox forever ?

This will at least give Sony time to bring back the mighty Killzone.......it killed Halo back in the day,COD will be no match!

But if they do take COD away from PS, which I don't think they will, we are looking at 6 years or so from now. That's a whole new console gen away and who know what gaming even looks like by then. My belief is that MS is going to use COD as leverage to stop Sony from moneyhatting everything, but won't pull it unless they continue to play dirty.

Of course they're going to take it away from PlayStation. You don't pay $70 million to own something nice, you do it because they have something that people must have.

Look back to the XBOX 360 generation. Microsoft did the very thing you are talking about and Sony did it right back when Microsoft committed suicide with the XBOX One. Microsoft's actions in that generation popularised the term money hatting. But Sony aren't money hatting everything at all. They have exclusivity deals on certain games, franchises and content. They haven't acquired them like Microsoft have. Infact look how ridiculous it looked for Sony when they invested in Death Loop and Ghostwire Tokyo. Microsoft acquired Bethesda!

Just giving a bit shout out to our main competitor for advertising our product. Thanks guys. Every time they advertise a Bethesda, Activision or MineCraft product they're advertising Microsoft. Exactly why Sony didn't allow cross play because Microsoft wanted players to have both an Microsoft and PSN account. They wanted to turn their competitors product into an advertising tool. Classic "moneyhatting" is what Microsoft is doing now. They aren't going for timed deals like Final Fantasy, Death Loop or GhostWire. They're just buying the baker and not the cakes.

I promise you now, Microsoft will not keep these multi-platform if it's their route to dominate the games industry. It is a $300 billion dollar industry. Microsoft paid over 20% of that to acquire a huge part of it. They now own core IP to the gaming world such as Doom, Wolfenstein (that practically started first person shooters), Elder Scrolls, Fallout, MineCraft, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Call of Duty, World of WarCraft, Diablo and more. They aren't going to let their opposition benefit from having that on their consoles. The second the pole position in the market is in sight, they'll move.

Microsoft has no legal obligation to keep these franchises and IP multi-platform and a promise isn't worth jack shit. They'll make them exclusive first chance. They'll also hurt Sony by making them available on Game Pass day one so there's no $70/£70 purchase required day one.

You can't compare apples and oranges. A lot of these streaming services create their own content. Whilst Disney could be argued as the Microsoft in that equation, there are far more than just a handful of services unlike the games industry where you have three consoles to choose from or PC/Mobile.

But the problem here is that the acquisitions that Nintendo and Sony have made, haven't taken core IP to the industry and gamers away from other platforms. Nor has any console manufacturer expanded through M&A as quickly and aggressively as Microsoft have. If Disney acquired Netflix and Paramount, then absolutely, that's monopolising. But it's not too far from Microsoft acquiring ABK and Bethesda.

Thanks man, you going to help me buy an XBOX and a Switch? I have bills to pay and a family to feed. I can't afford multiple consoles. And yeah, I am bitter about that but it's not like Sony or Nintendo have done anything like what Microsoft are doing. If Sony acquired 2K tomorrow and Rockstar and said XBOX would never see another GTA release again there'd be fucking hell to pay. Yet somehow, Microsoft have just aggressively expanded through M&A and they're downplaying the importance to people who don't care or understand about games to get away with it.

Final Fantasy is a timed exclusive, it will come to XBOX. Does Mass Effect, Bioshock, Alan Wake, Splinter Cell Conviction or Gears of War come to mind? How about when Square were blind sided into announcing Rise of the Tomb Raider as an XBOX exclusive?

The difference is these timed deal have an end date and they're not the majority of the investment being made. Imagine if Sony acquired Bethesda, Annapurra, Square Enix and all the other companies they've advertised exclusive content for? Then it would be outrageous.

Microsoft started this acquisition because Sony turned around the PS3 and excelled with the PS4 on the strength of first party studios. Microsoft never had an internal developer network like Sony had. Now it's gone from making numbers match to fuck it, let's just buy it.

But, and I stress, it's not just Microsoft. I was pissed off when Meta bought Ready at Dawn. Tencent are pulling this shit. Google did for a while. And yes, even Sony are guilty of it.

The difference is Sony are not acquiring major IP that's been multi platform for a very long time. They're not taking well known developers from other platforms. Many of their acqusitions so far with PS5 haven't released a title yet and companies like Bluepoint and HouseMarque have been PlayStation exclusive for so long, it doesn't hurt other platforms.

You should've seen the threads here when Sony's push towards the PC market that started about 2 years ago was revealed. Lets just say the majority of long-time PlayStation faithful did not welcome that news with open arms :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I was here and I did see them. But I think a lot of those people were from a younger generation to be honest. I've been a PlayStation gamer since 1996, though my Uncle had one in 1994 because he worked for a printing company that printed the Official PlayStation Magazine and staff got them as gifts to help advertise the brand. I used to have a MegaDrive and a DreamCast too. I've owned a Wii, GameCube and a Switch but I mainly game on PlayStation. I really don't have the money to sink into a pit like a hardcore PC gamer does and until recent times, there hasn't been anything I wanted to play exclusive to XBOX. However, it's not like Microsoft just designed some incredibly great games, they're just buying them. I don't really want an XBOX so it's a real kick in the teeth. Sure I can accept it, but I don't have to like it.

When was this exactly? Pretty sure no Killzone game has beaten out a mainline Halo at any point (?).

Wouldn’t even surprise me if Halo Infinite have sold more copies than the best selling Killzone game to date, despite being on GamePass.

It was half satire. I don't know if Phil cares about gamers, but his strategy has moved away from paying to keep games off other platforms and his has been vocal and clear about that. After this deal goes through, Xbox won't even need exclusives. Just put everything on Game Pass and dominate.

Come on man.....I was taking the piss.

Not a surprise, at all.

Just business, if there wasn't a contract already in place or if they weren't even a little worried that the deal "might" not go thru, because of the regulatory bodies, they would have pulled it once the deal was penned. Perfect example is Starfield. There is absolutely a PlayStation version that was being worked on, but once they were now an Xbox studio they pulled the pull. It doesn't matter if 10's of Millions had already been poured into that version... it's exclusive to Xbox now. That's a good business move. They'll take the hit on the PS version, they'll make up the loss in new Xbox owners who really want to play Starfield.

I do think MineCraft will be removed from PlayStation at some point in the future. Likely if Microsoft are close to becoming market leaders.

I think Phil understands gamers more than cares about them, which is fine.

He's been very vocal about keeping games multi Plat, which includes pc, mobile, and smart tvs. If they just needed to keep games multi CONSOLE and on game pass, ps5 would be getting redfall and starfield

Can you please share where Sony said Bungie stuff will be on Xbox forever ?

It was a non-negotiable component of their acquisition. May even be written into the deal specifically, but they've been very upfront about them never being exclusive

Now, you could say that Sony could recant on that, but then piss off all the bungie management and have them leave? that's not what they want. Sony cares more about GaaS than they do exclusivity, and understand GaaS can't be closed off and be successful

Bungie is a completely independent publisher, too.

Sure, BUNGIE has said they'll stay multiplatform. Sony has vaguely said that acquiring bungie is part of their multi platform initiative.

But at no point have either of those committed that they will keep making games for Xbox by name. Multiplatform can just mean PC and PS5 in context as well.

I get that a lot of gaffers don't like Phil for some reason, but he is way more forthright about this subject than anyone at Sony has been about Bungie's future.

Sony has specifically said that they 100% agree with Bungie and were on the same page regarding exclusivity and they never intended to close them off.

"Bungie has said that existing and future games currently in development will not be exclusive to PlayStation platforms following the company’s acquisition by Sony Interactive Entertainment."

It doesn't get any clearer than that

Claiming Phil is more forthright is a joke. The same guy that says he hates exclusives yet buys a MAJOR multiplatform publisher in Bethesda and then gets them immediately off playstation.

It can get clearer than this, that's exactly what you were demanding Phil to do earlier in the thread:

If he believed his own bullshit he’d come out and say CoD is on PS forever like Sony did with Bungie

Bungie or Sony do not come out and say Bungie is on Xbox forever in your quote. PC and PS5 are multple platforms. They need to say Xbox by name by your logic for it to count.

Claiming Phil is more forthright is a joke. The same guy that says he hates exclusives yet buys a MAJOR multiplatform publisher in Bethesda and then gets them immediately off playstation.

He said he doesn't like console exclusives, and with Bethesda all those games will not be console exclusive, they'll also be on PC day 1.

The same is not guaranteed when Sony makes exclusive deals.

It's just a meme the way some users like to express their hate towards Spencer in every topic. There's no actual merit behind it.

Yes, that's what I said.

Do you think trillion dollar corporations have pr and marketing for shits and giggles?

Pulling an already existing children's game isn't the same thing as a rated M game that releases in installments that are each their own story (for the most part), especially when the free to play mmo would still be on playstation.

I would be less surprised to see new crash iterations on playstation 6, than new cod mainline entries

Releases on pc/mobile/smart tvs day one, I don't know about you, but that doesn't sound like exclusivity to me.

Also deathloop and ghostwire were still ps exclusive after the deal finalized (key word, not announced), so much for immediately 🤔

Like I said, nothing but meme level rhetoric. Thanks for proving my point :messenger_blowing_kiss:

Meme level rhetoric, exactly what Phil's and your statements are

Good guy Phil buying Bethesda, who was already working on PC and ALL major consoles, now only to make them for 1 console and PC.

What a swell guy! That sounds like an amazing philosophy for gamers. Addition by subtraction
