VERGE:Phil Spencer told Sony back in January that Microsoft would keep Call of Duty on PlayStation for “several years” after current deal

You're naive if you think that's true.

Minecraft is a children's game, the optics of pulling it would be disastrous.

I've said it before and I'll say it again in my very strong opinion, warzone (including future versions) will remain on playstation in perpetuity, the next couple of mainline entries will come to playstation, with the first exclusive coming the first next gen release, maybe something like xbox series xyz, but only a ps5 release to ease in.

Mainline entries will have unlockable bonuses for warzone, enticing users to switch over, starting at the tail end of this generation.

Of course a lot can happen in that time, like sony developing a legitimate war fps contender, forcing cod to stay, but as it stands, cod was never going to be exclusive in perpetuity.
This has been a thing for two years already. Weapons, operators and skins. The Bruen is the first one I can think of, you had to unlock it via MW MP to use in WZ....or buy the blueprint, but the blueprint sucked, and you can't change attachments on blueprints in WZ if you don't have the base weapon unlocked. It is essentially P2W until the eventual nerfs happen and the cycle continues. But yes, this WILL be the case, but turned up to 11, if I had to guess.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Meme level rhetoric, exactly what Phil's and your statements are

Good guy Phil buying Bethesda, who was already working on PC and ALL major consoles, now only to make them for 1 console and PC.

What a swell guy! That sounds like an amazing philosophy for gamers. Addition by subtraction

Let me pop in Deathloop and Ghostwire in my Xbox .. oh wait. Wonder what happened there :pie_thinking:

At least you dropped the inaccurate Bungie part (y)

Uh oh, get ready for but smart TVs and mobile via xcloud. As if they couldn't offer those without being bought.
Sony has specifically said that they 100% agree with Bungie and were on the same page regarding exclusivity and they never intended to close them off.

"Bungie has said that existing and future games currently in development will not be exclusive to PlayStation platforms following the company’s acquisition by Sony Interactive Entertainment."

It doesn't get any clearer than that

Claiming Phil is more forthright is a joke. The same guy that says he hates exclusives yet buys a MAJOR multiplatform publisher in Bethesda and then gets them immediately off playstation.
MS perpetuates the Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt. The company and its fanboys live off it.

There's a very old meme picture which went something like "Sony fans don't just like their platform, they hate yours".

It holds up even better now than when it was originally made. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Oh wait, those deals were signed before xbox purchased Bethesda?

Look I don’t care if Microsoft makes their stuff 100% exclusive

But Phil comes out making statements about how exclusives are bad for gamers, it’s a logically inconsistent argument. He’s saying what you want him to say and not practicing what he preaches

Sony has had over two decades to create a "Halo Killer" and they failed miserably, most notably with Killzone and Resistance franchises. What makes you think they'll have any success creating an FPS experience that will be more successful than COD?
Who needs a “halo killer” with 343 at the helm. Joke studio

On topic. Cod will be exclusive in 10 years. Maybe even less. Doesn’t affect me but it will to millions.

Right. So xbox keeps warzone on playstation even through next gen, fulfilling their promise that cod remains on playstation. But eventually mainline axes sony releases, and now devout players need to switch to Xbox/pc.... But it's still available for Sony for the mmo!

Tough pill to swallow I guess, but we heard these same statements when Bethesda was purchased, from both Microsoft, and people trying to convince themselves that they could still play starfield and elder scrolls on playstation

With Bethesda he was clear that they will look at games on a case by case basis.

With Activision he has very clearly stated he will keep CoD (and maybe other) new games on PS platforms too.

Comparatively Bungie and Sony have been vague about which platforms they'll continue to make games for.

Phil is no saint but he is hardly to blame for half the stuff people throw at him, especially as other figureheads say similar or even more vague stuff.

TIL coming out on tv/mobile/Xbox/pc is exclusive.

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
Microsoft will release all their big games (Minecraft, COD, Fallout, Elder scrolls etc.) on Playstation for many years to come. You just watch.

In the end it's about money and they'll make more money on Playstation notably considering the stocks issues they are also facing.

Come on bro, he's been stating the time frame vaguely so he doesn't lose pr points or anger regulation boards.

He's very clearly going to make it exclusive in one form or another beginning of xbox xyz release AT THE LATEST

Anything that happens x years in the future is such a moot point right now. For now we know he's officially committed keeping CoD games on PS platforms for the coming years.

It was a non-negotiable component of their acquisition. May even be written into the deal specifically, but they've been very upfront about them never being exclusive

Now, you could say that Sony could recant on that, but then piss off all the bungie management and have them leave? that's not what they want. Sony cares more about GaaS than they do exclusivity, and understand GaaS can't be closed off and be successful

Bungie is a completely independent publisher, too.
$1.2 billion of the $3.2 billion price tag of the Bungie purchase is tied to Bungie employee retention. They cant leave even if they want to.

Sony bought Bungie and overpaid for them as insurance against cod going exclusive. Their new IP has been in dev since 2017. It's going to be huge. Probably bigger than Destiny. MS is gonna want a part of that.

Another character based multi-player like overwatch being developed in conjunction with netease

Gonna need one hell of a unique aspect to it to fill an overflowing genre, especially if it's enough to keep call of duty in line

Retention is only for 3 years

There’s zero indication that they’re not going to be on Xbox

That's nice but what's the relevance? Took it personally when I mentioned they live off FUD did you?
Sure, BUNGIE has said they'll stay multiplatform. Sony has vaguely said that acquiring bungie is part of their multi platform initiative.

But at no point have either of those committed that they will keep making games for Xbox by name. Multiplatform can just mean PC and PS5 in context as well.

I get that a lot of gaffers don't like Phil for some reason, but he is way more forthright about this subject than anyone at Sony has been about Bungie's future.

They mention them by name and even mention future Bungie games:

Will be the same for nearly any acquisition.

Embracer just seems to be a holding company, at some point they're going to sell to someone, and it's going to be a complete shitshow.

WB games seemed pretty close not that long ago, but apparently they're happy with the video game division.... We'll see if that holds if Gotham flops.

Whether it's Sony, Microsoft, ten cent, Apple, Amazon, Nintendo etc, a significant portion of gamers will be absolutely furious lol

This article is very specifically talking about Destiny 2, a game that's already out on Xbox.

And this is the only named mention of Xbox in the article:

Q. I play Destiny on Steam, Xbox, or Stadia – will my platform still be supported?
Yes.

Gracious to let a game already out on a platform continue to get support.

Got anything about future games ?

lmao we made it same time. He's essentially confirming COD will go exclusive or at least that there won't be any xbox specific content perks till after a good while. Either way, Microsoft is reserving their options to make it exclusive it sounds like. God damn!
Well they're hardly going to sign a lifetime agreement now are they? But they've basically confirmed it will be there the entire Gen and probably beyond.

Are you blind or what?

Q. Bungie has future games in development, will they now become PlayStation exclusives?
No. We want the worlds we are creating to extend to anywhere people play games. We will continue to be self-published, creatively independent, and we will continue to drive one, unified Bungie community.

If we lived in a perfect world, Killzone would be a much popular game (because K2 was already better than COD at the time) and Sony wouldn’t even care about Activision deal.

Sony should’ve trusted more on Killzone, but they tried to CODify Killzone 3 and failed. Then abandoned it after the PS4 launch.

If there’s one company that can build a good COD contender is Sony. Whether it’s Killzone or a new franchise, but they prefer to go the stupid NFT, GaaS, and mobile route.

I blame 2022. Literally 2/3rd of games announced for 2022 got delayed.

I wasn't born in 2022 and hence I've seen many years like this one from Xbox's first party offering.

My view on it is that nothing changes until they change how they manage their studios but I'm happy to be proven wrong. Considering what's gone before I'm certainly not in the business of counting chickens before they hatch on their behalf.

How's that been going for you this year?
Been going pretty shitty for everyone regardless of console and regardless of whether it's first or third party.

Covid delay is at its peak, companies don't want to delay until its the only viable option, 23/24 will be absolutely stacked across the board, then business as usual barring another global disaster

That isn't a contract.
correct me if that has legal binding power.
I would say its a contract

“In January, we provided a signed agreement to Sony to guarantee Call of Duty on PlayStation, with feature and content parity, for at least several more years beyond the current Sony contract, an offer that goes well beyond typical gaming industry agreements,” says Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer in a statement to The Verge.

Shopping around for timed exclusives has been a thing in gaming since the very beginning. Nintendo do it, Sony do it and maybe you have a short memory, or maybe you're blind to it but Microsoft did it right up until the advent of gamepass.

Just because they have now evolved past that and are instead attempting to outright purchase any studio/publisher that is open to negotiations it doesn't mean they are suddenly the good guys. Far from it in fact when you consider it means other platforms will never get games that otherwise would have been third party. Don't kid yourself, if xbox weren't busy purchasing studios wholesale and negotiating "day one" deals for gamepass then they would still be out there shopping around for timed exclusives.

"Keep away" (isn't even the correct term for it but whatever) clauses are standard across the industry when negotiating marketing deals and/or a timed exclusive deal. It enables the negotiating party to have first dibs on the game for their own subscription service before it can arrive on any other subscription service. If Microsoft are opting to delay the release of Deathloop and Ghostwire on Xbox until they can simultaneously launch them on gamepass then that's their choice, they don't have to do that considering the deal for the games themselves is only 12 months.

If you want to complain about topics the media dare not talk about then I'd suggest looking closer to home because there's plenty that could be highlighted.
They hypocrisy of some of the usual suspects around here is mindblowing. They bitch and moan that Sony signs a deal for 6-12 months exclusivity but party like it is 1999 at the thought that MS is buying up the industry to shut other gamers out of a large chunk of the market permenantly. I get that it is just fanboyism but they should be carefull what they wish for. MS has not always played nice with its customers when it does not have to. They can be just as arrogant as "arrogant Sony" when they have the freedom to do so.

I'm definitely blind cause I don't see any mention of the word Xbox in there. It fits in line with Jim's PC push in their new 'multiplatform initiative'.

That's a very well put fluff statement tho, no denying that.

Overall its been a slow year but without naming names certain companies have still managed to produce some absolute bangers and there's still more to come.

I don't understand the amount of excuses and leniency afforded in this situation. Remind me again, how many studios do they own? How many IP are under their ownership? You're trying to tell me they couldn't even get at least a couple of AAA products out the door?

It's piss poor scheduling and management. Other companies with far fewer resources have managed to get on with things through difficult times so I don't want to hear excuses. If what 343i have been able to get away with doesn't raise any red flags then I don't know what will.

The mask has slipped for a lot of posters now and whilst originally it was all ‘yeah man Xbox is so chill of course they will publish CoD on PS forever Xbox is all about options only Sony cares about muh exclusivity’ and now you’re getting a stiffy over depriving PS players of a multi platform game?

It would be hilarious if you weren’t actually cheering on a mega coorperation. You a wanksta.
I wish I could make fanboy posts like yours but even I can't handle this much cringe lol

Come on Guys, did you expect less? Are people so delusional to believe a CEO/PR guy from a big company?

Even in the remote possibility it keeps coming to Play Station, how much time do you think it will last? Obviously not forever (even when they told otherwise, I knew it was shit). Be this guy, the next CEO, Manager, someone sooner or later will come with "No More, guys".

I barely play shooters so, COD means nothing to me. Only Diablo is interesting for me, but I can play it on PC.

This is all the CEO's / PR guys real nature:

At least Jim Ryan is honest about exclusivity.

Why would Sony sign a fake gesture?

If Microsoft reneged, the next time they're being reviewed by countries for an acquisition nobody would be able to take them at their word.

The value of being able to point at the letter both officially and publicly, is nowhere near the value lost of breaking it.... Maybe they'll find an excuse, but it really doesn't make sense for Microsoft to make a fake gesture in signed documents like that

We're in a topic where Phil has literally name dropped PlayStation. Meanwhile you're citing Sony/Bungie, whom have not.

I know some of y'all have an irrational hate for Phil, but at least have the receipts to back it up :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Please @ me when you find a mention of Bungie/Sony saying they will continue development on Xbox platforms. Thx.
