The Gearbox written "New Tales From the Borderlands" seems to be facing a lot of fan backlash

How do you follow up one of the most acclaimed games in the Borderlands franchise, and one of the best games Telltale ever released? According to almost every you tube comment on this video, not like this.

In addition to the many complaints you'd expect to see about modern Borderlands writing and character design, a lot of people are simply not happy that most of the fan favorite characters introduced in the first Tales From the Borderlands are nowhere to be seen. The fact that at least a dozen characters are seen in the trailer doesn't help matters either. Only one of them is from the first Tales game, and just like Borderlands 3, they were too cheap to get the original voice actor.

Aside from that, none of the main playable cast of characters from any of the games in the series were shown. More than one person seems to have noticed, much like the recent Saints Row reboot, the developers are ignoring their fan's connection to existing characters in favor of new, poorly written characters that most people don't seem to want or like.

After watching the trailer, what are your thoughts? For anyone who played the first Tales of the Borderlands, do you plan on picking this one up?

The robot telling the annoying ponce to get lost was kinda cool?
Everyone feels like they were designed by committee to check all the diversity boxes. Obesity & disability handled in one character?! The writer's room is ON FIRE!

Swear to god if there's a scene where everyone cries and someone says "we are a family!" in the game, one my greatest bugbears in current year storytelling.

I was amused, not enough to buy the game but I might just watch all the cutscenes once they get uploaded.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
This indeed looks awful.

Well, gues what? The original Tales had an all original cast of characters, and no returning characters from the franchise

So maybe give them a chance like you gave the original game?

I have no faith in Gearbox, but these criticisms are dumb. Wait until you see/play more

Alanah Pearce said Troy Baker knew about the project at the same time we all did. He voiced the main character in the first game. Tells you pretty much everything how much this is going to suck.

This explains a lot. After watching the trailer I was like this is a really strange direction to take after the brilliant first game. So different writers and probably the same writers of Borxerlands 3 and Tiny tina?

Gearbox is one of these company's that was great at one point in time but really can't be trusted to do anything the way fans wish they would. They also have consistently releases buggy, badly performing games lately. Controversy kinda follows them. Randy Pitchford will always be a clown as well.

This being written by Gearbox tells me it has no hope of being as good as the first one though.

That's not accurate. The trailer alone for the first Tales of the Borderlands game featured Handsome Jack, Marcus, and Zero. And Handsome Jack played a big role in the story through the entire game.

I've just seen the trailor, it look dog shit?

I loved the first one, the characters, Fiona in particular and I’m disappointed they won’t be playable again in this one.

I was excited for a sequel but having watched that trailer it felt flat, the characters just shouted random shite and non of it had charm or wit.

I’ll give it a chance upon release I suppose but I can’t deny hype has deflated somewhat with that trailer.

I figured the same trailer on the official Borderlands you tube channel might have some positive comments from people who are such fans of the developer that they're subscribed to their channel, but even THOSE people were almost entirely opposed to this game.

Gearbox really might have a big failure on their hands, here. It's been a long while since I've seen a gameplay trailer from a major series that was so poorly received.

In my opinion Gearbox has already destroy the series. Borderlands3 had shitty characters & writing and was super woke thanks to stuff like having an almost (strong) female cast of heroes of focusing an entire DLC on a gay wedding. The only redeeming thing was the gameplay, but in a game like Tales it won't save them, because the story needs to be the key part.

The game also had plenty of other returning characters such as Athena and Shade

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
Seems like it's lacking the wacky atmosphere of borderlands.

Also the graphics tries to be more realistic than the show? I would never have guessed it was a borderlands game.

Yeah, it looks awful.

IMO this franchise peaked at BL2. First TFTBL was good but it's been going downhill. One of the main reasons is that they're obsessed with the wacky, over the top cringe humor. I know it's always been a part of the series but it's been dialed up to 11 recently. IMO the best parts of the franchise are when it takes itself more seriously. I'd like to see a return to the BL1 tone, or the more serious parts of BL2.

Bordemlands is slowly going down the shitter…. Tiny Tina game was a chore to play through. It made boredermblands 3 seem excellent.
lol I didn’t bother correcting the spell check
Newsflash, Borderlands has always been a shite cringefest

Did the first game end on a cliff hanger?

Not really, but Borderlands 3 came out and only the two male characters introduced in Tales were in the game. The game had horrible writing, one character had a completely different personality and weird/dumb story line, and one of the voice actors was changed. The two female characters were completely forgotten about.

People were already not happy about that, and here's another game that either will ignore their characters, or put them in only a minor role. If the game doesn't do well or gets review bombed, I'm sure Gearbox will brush this off as "bigot gamers being mad at our inclusive cast," which is funny considering how many people just them wanted to continue the story with the two black female characters from the first game. Many of them also wanted to see the relationships or romance continue between the characters, and that aspect of things actually was a bit of a cliffhanger.

One other thing. For anyone thinking "Well borderlands games change the main characters with every game," while that is true, it generally does so in the SERVICE of the main characters, not at their expense. The playable characters in standard Borderlands games don't do a lot of talking, so making the first cast of characters NPCs in Borderlands 2 helped flesh out their personalities and continue their stories. For anyone wanting a continuation of the story that was being told, it made a lot of sense to do that with Borderlands 2. It makes no sense to do that in New Tales of the Borderlands.

Looks good to me, I got a soft spot for telltale games. Only one I hated was the Minecraft one.
