Sony May Have Just Shown A PC Version Of Returnal

https://gameluster.com/sony-may-have-just-shown-a-pc-version-of-returnal/
Sony featured Returnal at a Game Developers Conference presentation last week, and it may be holding a secret. As the game runs, the output can be seen along the right side of the screen as “Output: SDR (PC)”, confirming the game is running a PC version. The news was first noticed by Digital Foundry’s Alexander Battaglia on Twitter (thanks Alex).

This is not the first sign we’ve had of an upcoming Returnal PC release. An entry on the Steam Database went live in May for a title named ‘Oregon’, a code name for a game with some interesting tags, including ‘single player’, ‘bullet hell’, ‘roguevania’, ‘female protagonist’ and ‘shooter’. That certainly sounds like Returnal to us.

If that wasn’t convincing enough, there’s also localisation strings listed in the files as reported by VGC, like the undeniably Returnal-related ‘Atropos’ and ‘Tower of Sisyphus’. Finally, it was also featured in the famous Nvidia GeForce Now leaks, which is increasingly proving itself to be a legitimate source of future game reveals.

Sony has been openly embracing the PC as a platform to publish their first party PlayStation titles, even going so far as potentially considering an integration of PlayStation Network as we reported earlier. At this point it seems all but certain that Returnal will eventually end up on PC. Now, we wait.

It looks like Returnal may be the next PC game brought over from the PS5 by Sony's newly formed PC department. It's not too surprising though I expect several of the early games to be brought to PC, such as the Demon Souls Remake, Ratchet and Clank, and others. Some online are upset about Sony expanding their software reach, for some reason, but given how surprisingly low Returnal Sold when Sony dropped that last sales dump a long time ago, this may be what the game needs to be a bigger success by reaching more players. So if you put hate for Jim Ryan aside, this can only be a good thing for Sony and it's studios.

Returnal being on PC can also take advantage of the tech upgrade, making the game even better. I felt it was a bt limited to the hardware, and not because the PS5 wasn't capable, but because it was the teams first ambitious game and it was released early in the PS5's lifecycle. So they never had a chance to really get used to the hardware and tools, but by expanding to PC, it can only be positive for the dev studio.

I mean we all know its coming. Its just a matter of when?

I’m guessing early next year, they still have to release miles, uncharted, and TLOU first. Uncharted and TLOU are prob priority since they were already promised and they will want the latter to come out before the show.

I assume sackboy and returnal get a announcement trailer in the next showcase for when god of war was released last year (jan-Feb)

We know Uncharted is coming this year alongside Miles Morales.

But the one game i'm most curious to see how it will sell on PC is Returnal for sure. Seems to be one of those games that can find its audience on PC, specially the co-op mode.

I'm still not sure we're going to see all games ported to PC. I expect long delays on specific AAA IPs, and promotional runs on PS+. That said, I have a PS+ sub, and I now have a gaming laptop that put up a good effort, so I'm all on board. I don't know when the hell I'll be able to get my hands on a PS5, so this is good news for those of us still waiting. I might never buy a PS5, if the PC/PS+ release schedule is strong enough. I assume that's something Sony will want to prevent too, especially once supply catches up to demand.

This was confirmed a while ago in a leaked screenshot that showed RT Reflections, Shadows and even RT lighting. None of the features that were in the PS5 version. Kinda disappointing considering I paid $70 for this fucking thing on day one, but ive learned my lesson. Will wait for these games to come to PC now.

You regret your purchase over a year ago?
The game is amazing and RT effects will be hard to spot since the game is so dark.
Although I am interested how pc will handle the loading of new rooms and teleporting

I don't know if i'll like it, which is why i'm not spending $70 on it. Smaller chances of buyers regret.
I recommend trying it on a sub or buying second hand since there’s no guarantee you’ll like it even if you like similar roguelites.

Reached the third biome but just gave up since runs felt way too similar to each other.

?? did you even read my post? its all in there. I paid $70 for a game that was missing next gen features that are now being added in for an audience that didnt even bother spending $500 on a console I paid for.

The entire game takes place in dark caves and ruins, what RT reflections do you even think you’ll be seeing?

RT doesn’t automatically equal a better gaming experience, it’s useful for some games and completely irrelevant for others.

You can always refund. Another feature PS5 gamers don’t have.
Trust me, 2 hours for me is far from enough for me to decide. Not to mention i tend to throw these games on the backlog and only play them months later (passing the 14 day limit), since I pretty much always have something to play or am still playing through.

I did read the roguelite elements are not very good, that this should've been more of a normal third-person shooter.

But who knows, maybe when it comes to PC someone will make a mod that lets you save your progress.

Would you still be disappointed and thinking that the game wasntvisually impressive on the PS5 if the PC port never existed?

The game looked awesome at launch, and still does.

They probably didnt put RT Reflectios, Shadows and Lighting because otherwise the game wouldnt be played on PS5. Simple as that.

It already runs at 1080p reconstructed.

If you have a capable PC and can wait years for the possibility of playing a Sony exclusive, well, go for it.

That's fine and all but I would like Sony to go over the ps4 (and PS3) catalogue first. Excluding Bloodborne there are lots of games that would be nice to have on PC like the infamous games, killzone ,ratchet and clank, or sly Cooper collections.

Returnal and specially the also rumored sackboy release are pretty unremarkable.

My opinion is it’s a great shooter with excellent controls and mechanics but a really poor roguelite because runs don’t feel varied enough (plus plenty of other issues like the game trying to be both a Metroidvania and a roguelite).

They may add an RT mode to the PS5, if these settings do appear in the final PC version.

Probably the only PS Exclusive I have zero interest in. Hope they get it out of the way quickly so we can move on to better stuff.

They might add a RT mode on console close to the PC release.

Relax, breath and wait. Nothing is confirmed yet.

That "SDR (PC)" only means that this debug demo was captured on a PC without HDR, which is what devs use to develop the game and test stuff like what is shown in the demo. Console only games are also developed using PC, this doesn't confirm anything.

but given how surprisingly low Returnal Sold when Sony dropped that last sales dump a long time ago,
These were only sales of a very short period, during the console's launch window where the very supply constrained console still had a small userbase. It's also a new IP on a nichey genre, plus also the first bigger game from a team that until now made not super selling small games.

Everything considered Sony was happy enough with its sales and reception to buy the studio. There was nothing wrong with these sales numbers, which were a tiny portion of the sales the game will sale across all its lifetime.
