PlayStation: Xbox's Call of Duty offer was "inadequate on many levels"

it was never announced for xbox duh :p

Well neither was the first COD that will be Xbox exclusive. But Jimbo is using the logic that since COD has been on PlayStation since 2005, it should always been on PlayStation.

Xbox got FFXI, the FFXIII trilogy (and the BC version of XIII is the definitive edition of the game), FFXV, all of the remasters (FFVII, VIII, IX, X, XII) not to mention all of the KH games. But suddenly FFVII and FFXVI are exclusive. By Jimbo's own COD logic, then Xbox should still be allowed FF games, but he's preventing that with deals with SE.

Nothing stops SE now from releasing it on Xbox. It's their decision, not Sony's. Just like it was with MGS 4, FF XIII, Ni No Kuni and many more japanese games.

Xbox got the full FF XIII trilogy. Hell SquareEnix updated the 360 FFXIII with full 4K FMVs when it went BC.

This won't look good for Microsoft. Call of Duty is something else for gamers. It's not like God of War or something. There are people just buys a console for Cod or Fifa alone. You can't just take away something from these people and look gamer friendly at the same time. 3 years is bullshit. Hide your Starfield where ever you want, but you can't/shouldn't make Cod an exclusive game.

I'm a Pc gamer so I don't care that much about it, in case you think I'm crying next to my Ps 5 lol. Fck them if they make it Xbox only though:)
Those gamers will go to Xbox or PC just like gamers jumped ship and went to PS when they started getting DLC first exclusivity. It’s the circle of life they will adjust.

Sony bought Bungie and confirmed all existing and new Bungie games to be released on Xbox, even without any regulatory pressure.
And? Microsoft is making all Minecraft games multiplatform. what happens with one studio does not need to happen with another one.
Sony have been much more aggressive regarding exclusives than Microsoft

Several = more than two but not many. That's the definition, and 3 more years additional years after current contract is in that definition.
Yeah so Jimbo is not really saying anything that new here.
It's pretty ridiculous to expect Microsoft to lock into such a long deal.

Bungie set the terms of that deal.. Not Sony.
The terms is that SIE bought 100% of Bungie and all their current and future IPs, so that Bungie became a fully owned and controlled SIE subsidiary that reports to Jim Ryan. So they will do whatever Jimbo tells them to do or if not they will be fired and won't be able to go away with the Bungie company or IPs because Sony now owns them, not Bungie or the Bungie employees.

For now, if they don't change their mind Jimbo will let them to continue publishing full multiplatform using their own Bungie publishing label to differentiate it from the new PS only games published by PlayStation Studios publishing label. Or at least it's what they said until now.

If MS decides to make exclusive CoD and who knows if other shooters like Doom, Overwatch, etc. maybe Jimbo changes his mind and makes the Bungie games exclusive or at least don't release them on Xbox.

What is Jim giving Phil in exchange for keeping COD on their competing system for three extra years beyond the prior agreement? What has Jim given in return for keeping Minecraft on the platform? What has Jim given back for Phil honoring the exclusivity agreements in place with studios they acquired? Corporations break contracts all the time but Phil has fulfilled every one and intends to not just fulfill this current contract but allow Jim to continue having COD for three years beyond that.

Seems like charity from Microsoft and Jimbo seems to think he's entitled to it.
Jim gives Phil 70% of the revenue made by CoD and Minecraft on PS and gets for himself 30%. PS is the top grossing platform for at least many AAA IPs.

We know CoD made up to around $3B/year, being around $1B of that CoD mobile. So if Phil makes CoD console exclusive then MS would stop earning maybe around $1B per year that is generated on PS.

If ABK makes let's say $1B/year with CoD on PS, then Sony makes around $428M/year of the around $25B/year that SIE makes. If CoD sells let's say 10M games/year on PS where there are like 300M games sold/year on PS. The percentage of both things are smaller than the multi year growth that SIE revenue has.

If CoD leaves PS, MS would lose more than PS and it wouldn't be something really that big for PS/SIE because with the growth they have they'd quickly compensate it. The difference between making CoD exclusive or not wouldn't make Xbox and GP grow a lot because many players already have both consoles or have PS and gaming PC.

There's little charity.

Cod mainline games is different to Minecraft too, Minecraft is more comparable to warzone. But the mainline entrys come every year.

It's great you keep saying this without any proof. Nobody knows the terms of the deal. We know there's something saying that all Minecraft games will be multiplatform in the deal between Mojang and Microsoft.
There is a possibility that the same terms exist on Bungie's deal with some clausule to break the contract if it's not kept.

That's not what Bungie says.

We will continue to independently publish and creatively develop our games.

Sony sure does get passive aggressive when the topic comes to COD but their bitch asses aren't willing to fight on the acquisition front and at least give a blow back.

MS does not owe Sony anything once they own the IP. Sony can blame themselves for their lackadaisical approach to mergers and acqs this gen.

Says the guy who is preventing mainline Final Fantasy games from going to Xbox.
Makes a pittance in annual revenue compared to CoD.

Do you think Square Enix just decided that they didn’t want to port Octopath Traveller to PlayStation when they released the game on Xbox?

The whataboutisms don’t work either way, because we are talking temporary vs permanent shifts.

The CMA are looking at the long term picture, as will the EU. It’s not just about preventing new competitors from entering the space, but also about the potential for MS to stop publishing games on Steam etc to get you in to their walled garden. I think a lot of fanboys are going to be surprised at the concessions MS are going to have to make, there’s a reason they’ve offered an additional 3 years, and it’s not from the goodness of their heart.

Who in their right mind wants to play COD running from the cloud?

Someone who wants to play COD but doesn't have a PC or Xbox?

It's not ideal, but a whole lot more than the no other options Sony give for their IPs and when they moneyhat third party games.

Fortunately, Microsoft publishes their games day in date on PC and makes them available through cloud gaming too, so there's plenty of options if you don't want to buy an Xbox.
Even if you did GameStop has the Series S used for $249 which is cheap IF COD goes exclusive and IF someone wants to keep playing it on console

Only people really pledging their undying allegiance to one team or the other only cares about this

You know how much I care about exclusivity?

1-MS has not had temporary exclusives for AAA franchises with an impact on the sale of consoles for 8 years. From Tom Raider and all of us we remember the mobilization against that we never saw in the Sony cases.

2- Sony has squeezed its position of dominance to take over large AAA thirds that would be multiplatform. Pay to remove content and major franchises from the reach of Xbox console users.

3- Exclusivities from 1 to up to more than 3 years. The latest Xbox ones are only 3-6 months old and for Indian or AA titles.

Is the same situation for you?

You really do not think that the Xbox user can have reasons to feel annoyed?
So it only matters if they are AAA franchises? Yeah, no, not at all, it's either bad for both or it is bad for neither. Timed exclusives are timed exclusives. Someone could look forward to AA game easily as much as a AAA game.
Both companies do it.
Didn't MS have the Fifa Legends shite until a few years back?

Phil is too corporate, no way he takes the bait. He’s a master of talking a lot, but saying nothing, and that will continue.

Major props to Jim for cutting right through the ambiguity.

You mean like Insomniac in August 2019 or Savage Game Studios just 2 weeks ago? You mean like every other able company can do? How come before this acquisition no one had issues with Sony buying and making those games exclusive to Sony along with people on the internet bragging about “exclusives” that are not on PC. Now the tables turned and Sony is following what MS saw years ago they got ridiculed about with releasing on PC. Jim has no position to say anything and MS gave Sony a deal they didn’t have to do for the next 3 years.
Its like watching someone throw a pebble at someone’s head and then watching someone drop a boulder on someone’s head and saying ‘look, it’s the same thing’.

I don’t know why the mere scrutiny of this industry altering deal is triggering some people so hard. Probs worried about the ass blasting egg on their face should it all go tits up after all the gloating on here.

Microsoft will respond the best way they know how, by opening their wallet and acquiring EA.

Yep, but it's all his fault which is why he is angry. Doesn't go well with his plan to release all their precious IPs on PC.

With COD eventually on Gamepass and PS exclusives soon all releasing on PC, who is going to buy a PS5 (well say PS6) to play games when everything Playstation will be cheaper on PC and without subs? Bonus: hacked (free) games and mods.

Inevitably the only winning sides with Playstation releasing their games on PC is Steam and Microsoft, not Sony.

I disagree. Offering it through the cloud is worse than taking it away completely. At least no one is getting ripped off if its taken away completely.

Some games might be fine for cloud gaming. COD is not one of them. Anyone on this forum should know that.

Making a timed exclusive DLC and taking a game away from a console is not the same thing. According to this, Microsoft started that bullshit btw.
Fortunately, Microsoft publishes their games day in date on PC and makes them available through cloud gaming too, so there's plenty of options if you don't want to buy an Xbox.
Good luck to those who will play a COD game on cloud servers or pay 2 times more than a console to play a game.

I thought that Microsoft would make it free day one on Gamepass. I think it's more than enough for atracting gamers to your console, if you don't want to destroy your rival.

Still will be a lot of people out there not wanting to invest in a PC and have a box to sit under the TV come home plop on the couch pick up the controller click a button and everything just works

MS bought activision for King.

They are going out of their way to offer CoD, which will become a first party game, to a rival platform for a number of years.

Jim is just being incredibly greedy.

Where did they mention Xbox specifically ? Please don't post any vague statements, post exactly where they said Xbox since you seem confident.
They explicitly mentioned competing consoles that covers Xbox.

They’re both doing it. And Sony has bought several multiplat studios which has only released games on Playstation afterwards and they pay for exclusivity all the time and even have multi-year deals without any solid info when or if they’ll end, they’re literally the industry experts at this, Jim even managed to take away MS 1st party studio games lol
Sony have not permanently taken away any multiplat game series from gamers.
