Xbox players need to realize that JRPG developers (and by extension, the rest of japan) do NOT care about Xbox.

Uh, what spawned this line of conversation today?

Also, can we wait until after the ID@XBOX event where they'll be showing titles from around the world (including I would bet Japan) before we shit on Xbox for not caring about Japan?

(Xbox also is the only one of these major console manufacturers which is actually part of and being shown at Tokyo Game Show, they have a second streaming event just for TGS and the Japanese audience, although that's probably more brand management and not a lot of new announcements.)

Nor do we care about JRPGs...they're a few generations behind WRPG's in terms of quality.

I’m not a teenager anymore, so I don’t play JRPG’s.

If this was 15 years ago, I would care.

90% of JRPGS today are trash. It's the hard truth many people don't want to admit.

And before anyone says I'm hating, JRPGs were the only genre I would buy without question in the 90's and early 2000's. Anything that had the Squaresoft logo was automatically on my radar. They just haven't aged well and most JRPG developers haven't adapted like other developers.

Uh, what spawned this line of conversation today?
People started shitting up the Octopath II thread with their "lol it's not on Xbox, even though the first one is - which obviously means it did horribly on Xbox / Game Pass" shenanigans

The Xbox Series X/S have sold a combined total of over 200k sales in Japan.
The PlayStation 5 in comparison has sold 1.6 million, and the Nintendo Switch unsurprisingly comes in at a whopping 24 million across all 3 units available.
The Xbox hasn't even sold a quarter of how much the PlayStation sold and hasn't even sold 1/100th of how much the Switch has sold.

Now.... tell me, Xbox fanboys. How can it possibly be MONEYHATTING of all things that's preventing games like Octopath Traveler 2 or Disgaea 6/7 to come to Xbox? Do you honestly believe that Sony money hats every single god damn video game on planet earth? You think they have the money to even do that? Why would they even money hat a title as insignificant as Octopath Traveler, where the first game only sold like what, 3 million? Why do you think Japanese developers only bother when the prospect of Game Pass comes up? It's because XBOX PLAYERS DO NOT GIVE A FLYING FUCK ABOUT JRPGs. They almost ALWAYS sell like shit on the platform. What's the point of 'maximizing sales' when the money spent creating the port would eclipse the actual return you get in sales? If you want Japanese games, buy the god damn Japanese consoles.

And it's all because 'Xbox isn't popular in Japan' Well no duh, but they had something good going with the 360 where they were able to consistently get Japanese developers to put games on their platform. Also, Apple's managed to easily make the iPhone the most popular god damn device in Japan, and Microsoft have clearly made a popular Japanese product in the past (Windows) so if after 20 years they still haven't found a way to make Xbox at the very least as popular as PlayStation in Japan... that's on them. Phil needs to take some notes from Apple and learn to make a product the Japanese like. Only then, will Xbox become more than an afterthought for companies like Square Enix and Nippon Ichi Software. Even then, I highly doubt that's going to fix the clear lack of interest towards JRPGs on the Xbox side. You're just gonna have to find a way to get your Xbox friends interested in Octopath (it'll be a cold day in hell before that happens.... lol)

The Xbox gaijin dudebros are actively hostile toward JRPGs. They’ll stop at nothing to see this genre go extinct.

The green rats made their bed, now they can lie in it.

WTF is going on? I honestly don't understand position of OP.
Japan has not and will not ever fully embrace Xbox? Because no JRPG's?

Think it's far more complicated than that. And MS knows.

Dont worry.

I'm sure Jim Ryan, Herman Hulst and the rest of the PS employees at California head office support JRPGs loud and clear.

Instead of buying cod, they shouldve bought Capcom and Square Enix. They are already competitive in the western market, why get more shooters that you were already getting?

Just to name a few.
Let me name a few more

Dragon Quest XI
NieR Automata
Blue Dragon
Stranger of Paradise

I can cope as hard as I want, it still doesn’t make what you post anything other than fanboi drivel.

So, what, fanboi harder? I have all three consoles, so I don’t have to troll to make myself feel better about my console choice. Which is why I get to call out unadulterated bullshit like your post trying to masquerade as fact.

MS and Sony buy exclusivity rights for indie games all the time. No reason they wouldn't do it for low profile JRPGs. But it's true that they sell much better on PS so it's a possibility that publishers don't think even an Xbox port is worth bothering with.

Octopath Traveller 2 got announced for everything but xbox and instead of realising Octopath Traveller 1 released only on Switch and MS paid for a gamepass port 3 yrs later the conversation turned weird and people were saying JRPG devs love xbox but are just being paid not to develop for it or something.

That's because they are racist/culturist 😁, everyone is AntiAmerican. It's kinda true. Xbox could ask every Asian gamer what game they want on an Xbox and the. Put those games on there and they still wouldn't buy the console.

Weird thread, but, I do often wonder what it must feel like to work at Tango Gameworks and realize that like, no one will ever really talk about your games in your home country ever again.

maybe they don't care either but when you've got the brand recognition that Playstation does i'm sure they'll manage just fine. Xbox on the other hand hardly has a presence anywhere outside of the west

Weird to make this thread about « Japanese games » when Xbox is getting Fatal Frame, Crisis Core, Yakuza Isshin announced today.

If anything the situation is way better now than it was a few years ago. The rest can be played on Switch which is the home of JRPGs now without any doubt.

Obvious joke post, but it would be hilarious if somebody legit tried to claim the Japanese generally hate the US when A) they watch plenty of their movies, shows, and cartoons, B) they have thousands of statues of Colonel Sanders everywhere and KFC is their legit go-to place for Christmas Eve celebrations, and C) they’re very kind to foreigners (minus a few xenophobes/racists, yes they exist in every country) and if you’re visiting it’s nice to have a gift ready for someone who helped you out significantly and they get delighted with American snacks/treats/etc. not as easily available in Japan.

Jrpg devs will and do care about Xbox once Microsoft opens their wallet. That's why xbox has octopath traveler (ps5 does not!!!). That's why they have persona 5 royal. That's why they have that newest atlus game. So long as ms pays these devs these devs will care. And it's GREAT for me because Microsoft's payment includes that these games will be on game pass!! Well I'm actually buying persona on switch but it's still great. Game pass is the way we'll see a lot of these jrpgs. Which is a good thing. Love it!

this is the approach Xbox should be taking... although i think they should be far more aggressive with it. as well as pushing Xcloud HEAVILY in Japan. Japan loves portable devices these days, so if MS could advertise Xcloud as a portable solution for Xbox sales could go up the roof and so would their abysmal japanese market share. also helps that japan has internet everywhere

The Xbox Series X/S have sold a combined total of over 200k sales in Japan.

Actually it might be south of 150K going by the Media Create numbers, but that is another topic altogether.

Ultimately it's on Microsoft to show that they can provide a healthy ecosystem for JRPG devs/pubs on Xbox by dev/pub's rules, not Microsoft's. Which means it's also up to Xbox owners to actually buy these games more often and in greater numbers.

The more that the platform has to rely on late-blooming GamePass deals to get some of those games to the systems, the less likely JRPG devs/pubs will prioritize Xbox as a key platform and the harder it will be for Microsoft (as in, more money they have to pay) in order to get those games into GamePass in the first place.

Had Microsoft not completely 180'd the seeds of growth into cultivating and supporting JRPGs on Xbox they had with the 360, they wouldn't be in this situation in the first place and we wouldn't need a thread talking about this issue. But while there are some salty hardcore/core fans of the platform who will blame other platform holders (or just a very specific platform holder) as the reason for low JRPG support and engagement on Xbox, ultimately they never focus that attention on the actual source worth placing it onto.

If they did, maybe things would start to be different in the grander scheme of things.

Honestly these days it’s worth buying multiple consoles. I like my JRPG’s, I like my fps’ers and I’m enjoying Gamepass. Honestly it’s a great time to be a gamer.

You say this and in your OP reference to console unit sales, xcloud isn't going to make a big difference to console sales in theory.

I think I would wait to see what the TGS looks like but I am always supportive of Xbox/MS spending more dough to get Japanese devs to port/release games on xbox/ms store.

I dont think even Xbox deems japan that important or their games....im pretty shocked Octopath isn't coming to xbox when the first game was on it.

These devs truly do not care for xbox, or MS has to pay a hefty fee with no ROI.

I don't see why else shit like this happens tbh
