GTA 6 just got leaked (Up: confirmed real)

I get what you are saying and understand it to a certain extent. But I also know a lot of people in Game Development and been around the industry for about 30+ years. When I see this stuff happen when the developers were not ready to release information or the information in the context they wanted to is frustrating to anyone that was working on this stuff. I have no feelings towards Rockstar as i really don't enjoy many of the games they make, but I do know that this is a big gut punch to the developers and that is sad to see.

But I fully get being able to see stuff for game that has been rumored and known to be in development and to finally see some stuff in ways we normally don't get to see.
From my understanding the likely scenario here is that lower level employees get locked out for awhile while security goes through everything - but that’s essentially paid time off - creatively this is super easy to recover from. The game they reveal will look way better and make tons of money either way. What was truly even revealed here? A guy/girl protagonist, you can rob shops, it’s in vice city? Like I’m struggling to see the actual tragedy

That tragedy from what I gather is the hacker has the source code and if released will be devastating. From a devs point of view based on people I know, it is devestating to them when all the work they have done is released in not in the way you want it released. But I think the biggest fear is the source code and what may happen with that. This shit is just crazy though.

I guess I see what people mean about how little visual progress was made from GTAV which was released in 2013 (lol), but I gotta admit the movement animations are kinda amazing? Tons of mocap. Prone crawling looks the best I've ever seen - in one of the clips the character pushes a couple boxes out of his way as he crawls. Looks procedural and not a scripted event.

I don't know where visual polish comes into the development progress but if that's towards the end, I think this is looking pretty good. Maybe not "9 years later" good, but it's obviously AAAA and will be well worth $70 or whatever. As long as single player isn't locked away by monthly subscription I'm looking forward to this in 2025 (lol x2).

Yeah I mean if that happens that’s way worse but even if he releases the source code, similar to what happened with Half Life 2 - isnt it just like “damn I wanted the public to see it in its full glory and not judge it based off a pre release state”? Cus I get that sucks but it’s really not the end of the world at all for a game like GTA6

it's an old development build

what don't people understand about this? it's not the final game. omg lol
There are videos from 5 days a ago, lol. Before the gtaforums thread got nuked they were dating driver updates from just months ago as well. Those 90 videos are devs Slack vids to each other from the last two years, regarding numerous builds. Not disputing it's unfinished nature, but some of this footage is VERY current.

I just tried to load in to GTA: Online for my daily spin of the wheel at the casino. It gives you a message saying that the game is currently down. It's something to imagine that a hacker can have this much impact on a huge game like GTA.

Because it IS in development, any in progress internal build will look and run like shit, i've played plenty of stuff that leaked, especially when it comes to console, if its not close, it will be running with low res textures and poor lightning, only when it comes to public demonstrations is that they take what has been mostly finished to be shown.

Obviously?

I was disputing the "old build" claims.

How many people in that thread were saying I was crazy for pointing out that a game that started dev in 2014 would be last gen.

Time proves me right again. Didn’t realize this time i would be proven right in under a week. lol

I'd hold your horses on that one lol

I think you are right the game started in 2014 as that sound logical, but being on last gen imho is in the air. This is not only old footage, we don't know what Rockstar's choice would be regarding last gen, for all we know it could be holding back a set of features that make them want to go next gen only or something as we've seen that before. ie made during last gen, but skips last gen.

We've also seen cross gen, as in made for last gen, takes advantage of next gen etc.

I think its too soon to tell on this one as looking at any game won't tell us what Rockstar choose to do. We literally can see a PS4 devkit in this footage and still find out that Rockstar scrapped those versions.

SEEING THIS doesn't prove what Rockstar will do with those versions. So you'll be proven right when Rockstar gives the official trailer or even when it releases as we've seen games get canned last gen versions before release before lol Who knows at this point.

"Why would they target ssds and better CPUs for a gang that started dev that long ago " yeah...look Slim, I like ya, but you go down a tunnel sometimes.

They can target that after PS5 kits are given to them and being in "Development hell" might suggest thats when they turned the game next gen only when they saw it corrected lots of issues fast and could make a different game. Not saying this is what is happening 100%, but it very well could be as a logical reason exist why they'd target that after.

Maybe they feel more then enough PS5's and Series X will be on the market by the time they are ready to release with those fixes. A logical reason exist that would explain that...

Assuming this tweet to be real for a second...He used Protonmail using his real name? Lol this dude is going to get reamed. Protonmail has previously given data to the FBI if I remember correctly. Of course this "hacker" would be caught, but this soon and in this way...absolutely hilarious. Hope he enjoys prison, he'll be staying for a while after this genius thought it was smart to blackmail one of the biggest game publishers in the industry.

Rockstar likely has Cyber Insurance in the hundreds of millions. Hypothetically, they could delay the game 1-3 years and bill the insurance company.

It may take time for them to come up with a direction. Its going to be fascinating to see their attitude towards the stolen code.

They sold me the grove street GTA remasters... I can't feel bad for them.
The lack of respect they showed to 3 of the most popular games of all time, and their own history and legacy, well it turned my stomache a bit.
Those remaster should of brought those games up to current standards, and to a whole new age of gamers.
Then again, i'd love to know how many current Rockstar devs were even there when those games were being made back in the PS2 days, not many of the top guys are and it shows. Part of the reason wny i'm not super excited for GTA6.

For a company as giant as Take Two who likes to milk their big time franchises with either an annual release (NBA 2k) or have giant gaps in releases where they relaunch games over again (GTA) or ride the sales for eons, you'd think they'd put in some effort to make the trilogy a quality game they can milk for 10 years.

It's not like T2 rushes their games out (aside from annual NBA), so for them to put the trilogy game on the market in the state it was, something weird happened. Some reason the execs chose this game to rush out. Either they needed the money asap, or they thought the gaming community would just eat it up and not focus on the bad things in the game.

Well i suppose it gives them a reason to remaster/remake them again in another 5 years.:messenger_tears_of_joy:

If by real name they mean first and last then that’s not really useful as Gulf family naming, you’ll probably find 10 of his relatives with the same name and probably hundreds in his tribe with that name. A middle name can narrow things down a little but it still needs to be accompanied by something more useful.

Bah, this is all useless information. I just need to know if the talk show radio is gonna be good this time. I miss Just or Unjust.

Also, people saying don't expect any statement til today or whatever, I wouldn't expect hearing from R* North directly. It's a bank holiday in the UK today.

Or the people who normally laugh and cheer at these sorts of shenanigans, giving the perpetrators all the validation they are so pathetically and desperately seeking, will realise how much this shit harms their hobby and will have a change of heart.

If the hackers don't get validated, it removes a huge part of the impetus for them to keep pulling these childish stunts.
People have their own reasons for doing this, we know about these threats when we connect everything to the internet, work remotely etc. git, collaboration, data is absolutely everywhere. Security of this data needs to be taken more seriously obviously over at Rockstar. It’s a bad day for them and I’m not happy to see this, but at the same time I’m not going to necessarily have any sympathy for a multi billion dollar conglomerate.

The devs and artist sure, but not the company. The devs and artists will get paid either way.

If it’s attacking a health institution or physical devices that cause physical harm, then that is when “hacking” crosses over in to something more nefarious like stuxnet etc.

This is low level stuff though, oh no leaking code for a game. Some people on here need to get outside more if they think this is some truly awful, evil shit.

Exactly, Rockstar have been seeing what they can get away with.

Yep, they’ll be insured to the gills for this type of thing but it’s highly embarrassing and reputation wise does them no favours.

It's kinda funny but the GTA6 leak isn't as "interesting" as I may have thought it could be. For me it doesn't change much of anything. I suspect the hacker will stay disappointed.

I guess, graphically looks like a ps3 game because it's running in debug mode, without any optimization, like running it from an IDE i guess.

True, things I care about in this game are story, characters, cutscenes, mission design, music. I couldn't care less about how the crouching animation looks like. Official logo would be more exciting for me than what's been leaked so far.

Why shouldn't you have any sympathy for a multi-billion dollar conglomerate?

This is about the people who worked hard on the game, getting fucked by hackers. These guys didn't make the GTA trilogy. It's not just about getting paid.

this entire chain of events would be a brilliant idea for a movie if executed right. a hacker hacking into a big corporation's confidential dev files... hackers hacking into this hacker's system, the guy auctioning the source code, then at large and on the run, but arrested and tried. the downfall of R* and T2 and....
to whoever making the movie in the future, just remember I said it here first, and kindly give me 0.5% royalty if the idea took off

Explain to me who is “getting fucked” here?

I know they didn’t make the GTA trilogy. I’m well aware. Rockstar/Taketwo have no problem selling to the lowest bidder in grove street games, a joke developer who use AI and ML to save time and effort which ultimately ended in shifting sub standard products to consumers and doing it in a way that was very sneaky at the time. Very little footage before release etc. sneaky business practices to make more more more.

It is just about getting paid, that’s the capitalist society we live in. This hacker is looking to get paid as well.

These guys however choose to work at a place that decided the gta trilogy was good enough to ship to consumers and rip them off.

The people who worked for years on this are getting fucked. They are robbed of their reveal. People are selling their work on the internet.

The hacker is getting paid by robbing people, but the Rockstar employees are obviously not there just for money. There is a lot more to it than that.

do not tempt fate do not contrain Wonder Woman's thighs do not do not
Capcom was also hacked.
Yeah.
I was trying to keep my list of game companies hacked where the hackers walked recent, otherwise my list would be a thesis.

Come on guys.
Why would someone go to all the trouble of using protonmail only to have it attached to their real name?

jshreir not withstanding.

Well I guess we can all thank the hacker for being responsible for single handedly delaying GTA6 by another 2 years minimum.

All this for internet fame, he screwed over millions of gamers worldwide.
And people are applauding him for his efforts...

The world is a fucked up place indeed........ Filled with morons.

Oh wow where do you get this info from?
1. Delaying GTA6 by minimum 2 years? Wow! What if it still releases end of next year?
2. Internet fame? He did it for money he even said it for himself.

Their property has been stolen and their IT systems have been compromised. TakeTwo and Rockstar need to make sure that nothing else is stolen/leaked/sold. Developer systems will need to be shut off from the internet and make sure they are safe before they can get back to work. It will take a while to investigate and fix everything so development of the game could be paused right now. It might not end up being a significant delay but it very likely has been put on hold right now.

When CD Projekt Red was hacked it took them months to start back up. This is on a much bigger scale and way more damaging.
