Disney Wants a New Star Wars Game Every 6 Months

Sources have suggested that the entertainment giant Disney wants a new Star Wars video game release every 6 months. It’s understood that Disney wants one major AAA title and one smaller game per fiscal year, which is something Lucasfilm is set to deliver on.

The ramp-up in video game development for Star Wars games comes after EA lost its exclusivity access to the franchise.

So far, eight Star Wars titles have been announced to be in development, many of which do not have a scheduled release date.

Every Star Wars game in development:

  • Amy Hennig’s Game – Skydance Media
  • Untitled FPS – Respawn Entertainment
  • Open World Game – Ubisoft Massive
  • Star Wars: Eclipse – Quantic Dream
  • Knights of the Old Republic Remake – Saber Interactive
  • Jedi: Survivor (Fallen Order sequel) – Respawn Entertainment
  • Star Wars: Hunters – Zynga
  • Untitled Strategy Game – Respawn Entertainment
These eight games are the only titles that have been announced, with sources suggesting that there are several more in pre-development.

Some of the already-eight announced titles are believed to be some time away from release, too. In fact, some of these titles are believed to be at least 4 years away.

An obvious choice for a not-yet-announced project would be a Mandalorian game; which was teased last year by Xbox Era’s Nick Shpeshal (tweet since removed).

I’ve heard of rumors of a Mandalorian game “behind the scenes” for a while now, but so far these rumors have seemed to stem from speculation due to the success of the series. But if anything changes, I’ll update.

Other smaller titles will likely be aimed at the mobile market, or smaller games like Star Wars Squadrons by Motive Studios.

Disney has not learned the lessons that LucasArts learned through decades of making Star Wars games. Over saturation is NOT your friend and while the industry has changed and you can have multiple high level studios and companies producing star wars content, 6 months almost means having upwards of 10 games in development at all times. That's a pretty tall order for ONE franchise. Especially since it only takes a couple rough ones to really tank your image.

I think they're hoping for 1 or 2 big hits every year or two. Similar to what sony is thinking in the GaaS space.

It's dangerous thinking.
But the moment you have a very successful GAAS it cannibalises all other games and other GAAS, people don’t have time to play anything else.

As others have said SW tanked due to over saturation , they seem to be doing the same thing with games. Since they are doing all that is at least one game strategy?

lol It's nice to want things.

Just ask Sony and Microsoft how long it takes to make AAA games. 5-6 years minimum. They would need 12 studios working on these games and the dev wouldve started 5-6 years ago for them to start delivering.

Its funny to hear that it might be feasible that Disney didn't renew that deal with EA based on anything regarding EA's quality as EA is still making Star Wars Games, to hear that it might be based on them wanting even MORE Star Wars games is even funnier lol

Flooding the market with Star Wars games....what could go wrong? /s

So they've learned nothing from the "quantity over quality" approach that they've taken with the movies and streaming series. Wonderful. Just wonderful.

I think that's the cadence we used to get Star Wars games before the Disney buyout. The 10 year EA deal is what messed this up.

There's a Mario game every 4 months and no one bats an eye. This will be fine if the quality is there. I would prefer to hear more Lucas Arts adventure games remakes/sequels after the success of Return to Monkey Island though.

LOL. Literally hasn't been a new Mario game in 5 years.

It's like they think all the studios will hit their deadlines and quality won't suffer.
It's already happening with their Marvel movie/tv side of things. Disney suits are too busy plugging their ears and looking at money, and audiences are too busy rating things 10s or 0s for any of these studios to take in any actual constructive criticism. We're getting shows and movies here and there that are 'just okay' and forgettable. This will be a slow, slow burn(over the course of multiple years) of consumer numbers dropping little by little to where they will think the drop will be natural instead of actually being their fault.

Considering they couldn't even get that awful looking hunters game out on time I don't see this working out.

Someone should tell Disney that a AAA movie normally takes 1-2 years to develop, but a AAA game takes generally 5-6 years.

You are literally right. In the same way you wouldn’t count spin-offs in any other series as entries when making an attempt at being flippant

That's what I was comparing to though since the original source is not saying just mainline SW games. Take it however you want, but Mario games are once every 4 months or whatever. SW games having the same cadence doesn't seem high to me as long as the quality is there.
