Modern online shooters sucks and are no longer fun.

I would agree with you but the reality is at least when it comes to me is that I just don't even try many of them. From the trailers alone I don't find most interesting. I bleed Battlefield but you know how that has turned out the last few years, which only added greatly to my suffering when it comes to multiplayer shooters because I itching to get into a good multiplayer shooter these days.

For me the worst offender is every MP game being team or squad based, while some also being "hero based" which is some shit I've grown to hate.

Matchmaking also sucks, just let me choose a server from a list.

This is where I'm at. I've no interest in Matchmaking. It destroys any sense of community and belonging, which is one of the things I'm most attracted to these days, building, deepening, and strengthening relationships between people. Servers act as containers for people to repeatedly engage with each other and do just that. Games that place that first as a focus and priority are where I'm headed. Those are the games and developers I wish to support.

Get banned by who? Do we now rely on players in servers to correctly moderate the people playing on servers? This whole system depends on players moderating the servers themselves and requires an enormous amount of effort. I first have to play several matches on a server to "See if this is appropriate for my skill level"? Now we have people complaining that they get matched up with players that are too good after they had a few good rounds, wonder how they'll feel when they get banned from servers for that.

There's far too many issues with server browsers. SBMM is simply a much better solution for creating fair matches.

And people who aren't playing well because they are just playing for fun will be matched up with other players around the same skill level. What is the issue here?

SBMM is terrible.

I probably would have never played BF3/4/Hardline/1 that much if this games had the terrible sbmm system from 2042.

Halo is also a franchise that suffers from modern sbmm systems.

Halo fucking 2 in 2004 had the perfect systems in place, same with Halo 3.

Social and Ranked felt different. You got to see so many different skill levels in social playlists while ranked was more competitive and close.

That shit is gone in modern games.

Have one positive round in a quick match, guess what? I hope you enjoy getting buttfucked for a few rounds.

The recent MW2 Demo was really terrible to play after a few rounds when everything turned into a preaiming bunny hopping sweat fest.

A Server Browser will always be the superior system.
Also allows me to select a server in my region unlike SBMM which will throw you on 80+ ping servers because of your hidden SkILl Rank.

Fuck SBMM

It killed my desire to play any modern pvp game.

Battlefield 2042 is made for being a bland cash grab where diversity was the main focus.

Destiny 2 is a grind fest and pvp in it gets old fast because of the lack of unlocks etc in pvp. Pvp doesn't feel rewarding

CoD, which is my favorite online shooter, has implemented sbmm to suck all the fun out of the game.

"oh, so you are great at the game? Let's put you up to the hardcore pros so you get fucked over"

Battle royale is battle royale. Cool for those who want to go on an scavenging adventure, but sucks for fps enjoyers.

Online shooting is fucking dead and I hate it.
I'm too old to do these sweaty matches where I only meet people better than myself that executes me right on sight in sbmm games. It should fucking die.

We need more choices in shooters.

I do get my fun in cod 4 warfare remastered, and in cod wwii even though it can be hard to get matches in the morning.

And yes, I am this guy in the picture.

Go play Shatterline.

No SBMM and aside from the standard multiplayer modes there's also a really fun PVE mode.

That or go back to the source with CS:GO and git gud son.

There are many times in serve browsers where before or after a match I'd just spectate and chat, get to know these players and how they got so good. I'd come back to the same server days, weeks, months or even years later and the same people I know and recognize would be there

You enter a matchmaking game, you play with those guys for a few hours, and you never fucking see them again. Wasn't the whole point of online multi-player the ability to play with other people? With matchmaking I don't feel like I'm doing that, i feel like I'm playing with bots

I love hero shooter and play Paladins on a very regular basis, the games is always active and for some weird reason never on news despite it being very played and never lacking matches, but yeah, depending on a team is shit... I mostly play these days because some friends are somewhat dedicated players too and are good enough for me to not get smashed by other party teams all the time... The game seems lacking any functional sbmm for which on casuals matches tent a lot to be smash or get smashed, for which I'll always prefer sbmm, competitive games are not too sit and relax, they're supposed to be hard and many times not fun because they're for competitive people, I know this sounds weird to some but that's how it is, they're literally like sports in that sense

TitanFall 2 is god tier.
Apex Legends is amazing
Battlefield 4 is still alive
Battlefield 2042 PORTAL mode is great (tho idk if its dead or not)
COD Black Ops 4 is the best COD i've played in like 15 years. And i still regularly get in games.
This new COD MW2 beta was decent and the 3rd person mode is maybe the best 3rd party online shooter u can play rn
Halo Infinite u can complain about content, but gameplay wise its the best online Halo experience i've had since Halo 2
Star Wars Battlefront 2 isn't a great shooter but its serviceable if ur a big star wars fan
Destiny 2 is still fun sometimes. the only real problem is to be competitive on a consistent basis u need to play the PVE nonsense to get the meta weapons

I just hate all of the people cheating now. It would used to just be a problem on PC, but now with cross-play console players are dealing with it. Now we also have modded controllers on console that players can buy that have anti-recoil. It's really ruined multiplayer shooters for me

If you're consistently stomping other players, then isn't that guilty of what the OP is talking about. A good fps titles should be providing challenge which means you should be winning and losing matches. Otherwise just play against bots that you can change the difficulty.
Bots don't get mad over the mic and that's probably what the low skilled players who pray upon new players want out of it.

Real players with real skill don't care about being matched against good opponents.

You think a sports team cries to the league when they have the play their nearest ranked team? No they use it to prove their worth.

Go ahead and cry those tears feeble dramatist FPS players.

Games from 20 years ago somehow managed. Why is this an issue now?

If you believe that, then you have to have an answer for the following question...

Why has matchmaking gotten worse despite the industry growing and analytics improving over the last 20 years?

Or could it be...we were all better at shooters 20 years ago and never considered what it was like for lower skill players?

because they have no control over who they're getting matched up with which kind of defeats the point of knowing which server you're connecting to beforehand. it's not always about fighting strangers and showing who's best. sometimes people just want to play with friends or other people they've played with in the past, or at least have control over it and not have it randomized with strangers.

We were not better, but we didn’t have all the crap statistics and points, and awards and rewards that made us think “omg, I just wasted 20 minutes since I didn’t unlock XYZ”.

People were not chasing unlocks, reading min/max guides, planning their levelling strategies.

You got the game, you picked a map, you went to town. Sometimes you won, sometimes you lost, that’s life.

20 years ago nobody was going on GameFAQs making a thread saying “omg, they should make the game easier”. You either got gud, or you just thought the game is not for you, and you moved on.

So, you only play to wreck players worse than you? Or to have some challenge and maybe try to improve yourself?

Tbh, I think theres a clear difference between a good player and a pro player.

You know pro level right? Pros do that for living, they train basically everyday. It's just like League of Legends, I was pretty damn good at it but ain't no pro. I didn't "last hit" every single minion and don't do ultra rapid fast profissional moves, I don't micromanage every step, etc. And thats me saying that I beat pros at my level, but whats the point of facing those guys anyway? I used to play normals, if I ever want to take battles seriously I would go to ranked.
Also, at least in CoD case, it's hard to take the game seriously when they basically implemented an auto-aim.

I see only one. To see how much I suck compared to them. That's why I try to avoid them.

You reach a point where you realize you’re too old to keep up with the youngsters, who have nothing but time on their hands.

I hung my boots up with Battlefield V.
This is so true. I'm pushing 40 now and I have a handful of hours a week to game. The toxicity and negativity generated by the people who have hundreds/thousands of hours to commit to these games is so off-putting.

They've been kinda dead for awhile. Had to branch into other genres like R6, Hunt Showdown, Hell Let Loose, and Escape From Tarkov.

I can only recommend Hell Let Loose and maybe Hunt Showdown for short stints.

They have sucked for years. The proof is that people need incentives like unlocking stuff to play, instead of just playing the game because it's good.

The games are also changing all the time so even if it's good at one point it will probably be ruined by changes pretty soon.

Absolutely the trashiest genre of gaming today, irredeemable and now at its lowest point in gaming history

- all made to scam pay-to-win cash off of children and their parent's credit cards
- idiotic pop culture "skins" or other kinds of bait for social media
- the marvel-ification of everything, where everyone is a hero
- "seasons" model to keep alive shitty games with new payments
- just chasing streamers and their $$$ for cheap views, not players
- "diversity" which just means translates to lame character designs with possible pride month flags

Start trying out some random shit and maybe you'll come across something less popular but with enough people to play with.

You do any old school chooters? Quake and the like?

OP is full of shit. CoD MP is very balanced. Especially the ranked mode IMO.

One out of like 30 games do I get my fudge packed , otherwise I’m in top 3. As 34 year old man with a wife, kids, job, and little to no time played. Especially on FPS games.

If you are truly getting your back blown out game in game out show us the receipts.

Or you may just be that god awful that even kids licking door knobs dunk on you , so the game doesn’t have a skill metric to put you in.

Git gud or git Roblox.

For me it died with arena shooters. I was never good at them to play at some high level, but they were at least fun gameplay and design wise. Technology was cool, just looking at the levels was cool. Mechanics were super advanced.

Just imagine things were like in 1999. today, we're waiting for John Carmack to make new Quake KNOWING that he'll make it cutting edge in every possible way. Nothing ever topped Q3 and UT days for me...

Warzone Resurgence mode is fucking great, or it was not played for a while. Shit was like crack.

And no never bought a battle pass or enjoyed watching number on imaginary level go up, it was/is just fun as hell to play.

Online shooters are still fun. You just outgrew the desire to play them seriously. Complaints about "sweats" and SBMM are all reiterations of the same issue; you plateau at games and don't care enough to get better anymore. I think gamer culture needs to become open enough to understand that your situation is perfectly normal and allow you to express your view without needing to build complex arguments.

I do miss servers though for the opposite reason of most people. SBMM does a good job of finding you people at your skill level and keeping games competitive. SBMM is horrible for somebody looking to improve because it does a poor job of placing you against better players. Playing against much better players allows you to see new techniques and provides inspiration for improvement. I miss server communities where I could go to just practice and learn. Part of why I still play CS are all the custom CS servers with modes to train certain skills.

Problem is they are too slow lol.

I enjoy fast games, but I don't enjoy the game only locking me up against players way better than me all the time preventing me from having fun.

Hell let loose is like BF in you have to run alot to be killed or kill as I've seen.
I would suggest trying Splitgate, ideally with some friends. Custom games with some friends and some bots can be a lot of fun, especially if you like classic arena shooters.

Oddball from Halo? Gun Game from COD? SWAT from Halo? One in the chamber from COD? Spawn with two random weapons? Capture the flag? King of the hill? VIP? Big head mode? Low gravity with fast movement? It's all there and more. The portal mechanics also introduce a fun twist to all of these classic modes.

And the game is just so good at encouraging you to play with friends. It's free, it's cross-play on every platform, it has bot support, and it has private lobbies. You can play with just one other friend, or as many as seven others.

It's a "dead" game now with the followup in development, but they just released a free premium battle pass, and the developers have not announced any plans to shutdown the servers anytime soon.

High end sports camps put athletes of similar skill levels together and their #1 objective is to improve performance and teach.

If you're playing basketball against Lebron James, you're only chance is to chuck the ball at the hoop ASAP, form be damned, because he won't let you do anything else. That doesn't lead to skill improvement.

Current SBMM feeds you to better players a % of time and then bumps you back down when they think you're at risk to quit the game.

Part of it is cheating online went from a few assholes looking to troll to a full on businesses making actual money.

Everything from streamers using cheats to build themselves a name to cheat developers selling cheats.

There's a whole sub industry and community built around cheats and anti cheats these days with a good amount of money changing hands.

And all that leaves the end user/legit consumer with a pc loaded with kernel level anti cheats that when poorly implemented opens the door to malware on their PC's.

I still play Unreal Tournament '99 and 2004. And Quake 3. They will never be beaten.

I recently tried Splitgate and it was surprisingly fun. And then there is Halo: The MasterChief Collection. Solid games but yeah, they're no UT.

I add: they removed deathmatch from Doom Eternal and put in some weird shitty mode that nobody understands or wants to play. Are devs retarded nowadays?
I really just want a call of duty like they made it in the old days. Nothing more. I'm a very simple person.

EDIT: I've seen that the old call of dutys are available on xbox via backwards compatibility. Is there an active player base? Did they do something about the cheaters ruining these old titles?

PC cheats are the main problem, I switched to consoles "kept my pc" because of it.

Now with cross play I can't escape them. Crossplay should have an option for console only.

Its not just the fps genre though, it's odern gaming in general.

The only way to 100% stop cheats is streaming unfortunately.

Altough you're right and I feel your frustration, rethink your last sentence.
You guys are just sick and tired of the same old cheese that has been served to you by the big publishers for years. There are other games out there, aside from CoD, BF and Halo that don't fall into this pattern.
Look around, expand your horizons, play the games that are worth playing and most importantly, that are fun.
Many have already been mentioned here.
