Shuhei Yoshida: "We believe in the premium release of a title" before subscriptions

I seriously wonder why some people think it's wrong for us to buy games. I don't have an issue with a sub but I like buying my games more.

Game Pass is great, but I don't ever see it being a service where I can depend on it entirely for all my games. So I use subs as well as buy. Nothing is wrong with either. It is weird that we have to actually make that point.

The last thing Sony needs are for their most hardcore consumers in echo chambers (who think paying more money = good) to start begging for a gamepass equivalent..because Sony has smart people who see the big picture already and know that they cannot compete with that model (which is why they're doing everything they can to stop the ABK deal and other 3rd party games going to gamepass day and date).
They can't compete with who? MS? 😂

PS+ already makes way more money than Game Pass, how is it that they can't compete?

MS after years of broken promises went an entire year without releasing a single relevant game, right after they botched the latest release of the IP they are most known for so bad they had to start firing the studio leadership.

How is it exactly that Sony can't compete?

I'd rather pay more and play when I like than spend on a sub and having to constantly look over my shoulder when said games will be taken off the service with little to no announcement. Subs are great, if you got infinite time.
On Gamepass and PS Now there has been plenty of notice given before a game leaves.

You know threre are still millions of people going out and buying xbox games when gamepass exists. Just because you're in the group of people who will pay 70 bones for a playstation game doesn't mean everyone is still buying them.

I used to buy tons of playstation games day one, I haven't bought one outside of demons souls and that was thanks to it being available on launch day and I was In the hype...of course i needed one launch title to test the bad boy out.

I've not bought one game day one and i won't be buying ragnorok unless I can find an insane deal.

To be honest that game is going to come in so hot, Mark my words. 2018 had 7 patches in 7 days and was deleting people's save progress etc. I remember as I was day one, every day I went to play it there was a new patch. It felt like it went on for a while.

Sony have proven this gen you are better to wait. You will get a better performing game, more features and much cheaper.

Let's see how gow launches after the pandemic. If I hear its polished I'll pick it up st a cheaper price or used.

All I'm trying to say is we will see how sales compare to previous titles because we don't know if the wider audience of a console is completely accepting sonys pricing on games but theyve stopped sharing data and from what we hear in xbox threads, it means one thing. Game sales aren't where sony wants them to be and they are underperforming.
Sony games never sold so we'll as they have been selling in the last few years (when Gamepass was already a thing). If your are betting against GoW Ragnarok you are in for a rude awekening.

No point.
I am not subbing too plus.
I just want to but my games on disc.
Relying on free sub crap games is bad and stuff like gp is clearly devaluing industry and makes users used to free or cheap games. Which will have an effect on dev.

But as I’ve said. I just want to buy physical games I want
I really appreciate gamers like you bro, these are the same reasons I don't subscribe

I'm sure there have been, but they're not nearly as advertised as when new games are being added so you can easily miss it. I always feel like I have to rush when playing from a subscription.
I see the notices in the Gamepass App on both my phone and PC app. For example below is a screen shot from my phone.

Paying once and knowing you can replay your game anytime you want is PRICELESS in terms of the value it brings me
Playing a game on Gamepass once and completing is priceless in terms of the value it brings me.

Playing a game on Gamepass or wanting to play a game that is going to leave or has left and still having the option to buy the game, and with a Gamepass discount, is priceless in terms of the value it brings me.

There's so much hyperbole in this thread it's ridiculous. You're exactly right. Nobody is forced into either model and there's a place for both. I use subscription services and I still buy games. I can see most of my gaming coming from subscription services in the future because I'm past the point of needing to own a copy of any of the media I consume. And I'm old enough that I don't feel the FOMO that drives people to pay full price on day 1. But if I really enjoy a game I play I'll buy it because I want to show the developer that I want more games like it.

Microsoft very prominently and well ahead of time displays the games that are leaving in the dashboard so that you don't easily miss them.

I buy a game, play it, resell it. So I usually end up paying $25 to $30 for a game after resell and doesn't matter if I paid $60 or $70 initially. So to me there is really little difference in playing a game off of a service or buying it outright so, like you, I do both. But others do what they want and if it is either subbing or buying then fine. I'm scratching my head trying to figure out why there is even a controversy here.

I agree. The growth of subscription services has not changed a single thing for people want to buy and own game libraries but so many people are acting like their choice has been taken away. Physical games will probably disappear long before gaming goes subscription only.

I used to do the same thing as you. I would play a game and sell it, then use that money to subsidize the next game. It's cost effective and I understand why people do it. Then I got tired of the grind of buying and selling so I just started waiting for a sale. I was paying about the same, I was just waiting longer to play. I have fewer days ahead of me than behind me so I'm not going to spend them fretting over the clutter of boxed games. I just want to enjoy what I can in the time I have left.

Because it's often the same people who say GP is unsustainable, or a financial ruin which implies their decision making to buy games directly is a superior decision.

Should read "We believe in milking you before putting it on plus"
Isn't that what they do with movies? They put it on theaters first and then on subscription services. This is the right way since it gives the movie maker and the game maker their deserved revenue. you're not owed anything; Neither Sony, nor MS or Nintendo owe you anything. They don't owe you putting their games day one in the subscription. What's more, you can always WAIT. So this line of reasoning is BS. Would I like they putting Ragnarok on Plus day one? Yes. Will I complain if they don't? No, because that's not what they're selling to me. Ragnarok on plus is a bonus, if it happens, it happens. So stop with the BS. sony never promised you that.

You have to understand some people are looking for validation. If sony ever put their games day one on PS+, they will validate MS strategy... That's the whole logic behind this kind of reasoning.
I don't think anyone needs validation lol, Game Pass is already successful with or without Sony following. Personally I think Game Pass is the best thing to happen to the industry in years, and I'd love for Sony to follow the model to make their ecosystem more enticing. It's hard for me to bite the bullet on a PS5 when I compare the value proposition to the Xbox ecosystem.

Is this really a thing? Are there really people out there saying it's 'wrong' to buy games? I've seen people saying it's 'right' to have options and that is what sub services offer. All platforms have the same purchasing options so if you insist on buying your games you can. One platform offers a service with regular new games you can subscribe and play. There shouldn't be any problems with that seeing how it gives gamers a choice. Surely gamers wouldn't be against choice right?

Do you know that you can buy games that are on subscription services as well? With GP you also get a discount so, if you don't get your fill whilst it's on there you can buy it for cheaper and then continue playing at your leisure. I really don't understand the "look over my shoulder" sentiment either. When games are going off GP you get plenty of notice, there is also a "leaving soon" section that is pretty prominent on the dashboard, there's no underhand secrecy about it. The tone of your comment makes it sound like having a GP sub puts you in the upside down!

"The new PS Plus has tiers and essentially it’s like the old PS Plus, we still release two or three new games every month and a new tier, Extra, has a catalogue of hundreds of games for people to play. For Extra, our approach [is] we like to help the publishers [with] lifecycle management. I was managing first-party [at PlayStation] so I know that it’s like in the movies — a movie comes out at the theatre first, then goes to pay per view, or a subscription service, or free TV, every time generating new revenue and reaching out to a broader audience."

PlayStation with the 'If it aint broke' approach...

I'm really happy that PlayStation has competent leaders. Jim Ryan being one.

Good for Sony, sucks for PlayStation gamers though.
Nope. They show they're okay with the traditional model that provides them enjoyment.

There is nothing hypocritical about someone wanting to buy their games outright rather than paying a monthly fee. If they don't like the price then they will wait for a sale or buy it used. This has been the way people have bought games for decades.
Yep. Been doing it since Steam on the PC launched with their sales, humble bundles, etc, and do the same with sales on consoles. Day 1 bangers on both platforms are always worth every penny to me as well.

Only thing changed were fanatical narratives on message boards. That tend to shift with what the church of silicon says on any given week or so.

It's exactly what movie streaming services are doing with their ip. Studios have their own platforms now.

Some silly bastards will pay for a sub service and still buy the game.

Jim Ryan ain't somewhere celebrating about Starfield and Redfall slipping into the first half of 2023 like a console warrior...he is somewhere shitting his pants right now about the value proposition of Call of Duty (an annual release that is more popular and has made more money for Sony than any Sony 1st party game) being thrown indefinitely into gamepass alongside all the other Microsoft 1st party games and 3rd party day and dates.

Because it's often the same people who say GP is unsustainable, or a financial ruin which implies their decision making to buy games directly is a superior decision.

Many times subs don't give me what I want to play. Plus I prefer to not rely on a subscription to have access to my games. But that's just my personal preference and I don't hate people like you that use gamepass.

Honestly if your saying I want gamepass to go away I'm not saying that. As I said earlier both can exist in this market. However I always want the option to buy my games. Plus I'm sure many developers want people to do that as well.

I'm not against choice just against the idea we shouldn't be able to own our games.

Damn I really miss those days. Back then it was impossible to play those games at home and then consoles got introduced. Pretty cool how you were able to play fighters for the first time from the comfort of your couch.
I played Street Fighter 2 on the SNES like crack.

Before that, all those great arcade games on the Genesis.

I'm impressed by how out of touch you are. Having CoD included on Gampeass a few years from now is going to be this huge thing but having nothing in 2022 can be just brushed aside? Just someone buying regular CoD and playing is likely more profitable than that same person joining Gamepass, this entire MS domination master plan seems pretty flawed.

You know what matters more than possibly having CoD in a few years included on Gamepass? Having God of War Ragnarok in little more than a month as a premium game proving once again that the traditional model of selling games works for Sony.

Yeah I don't. Feel free to enjoy gamepass while I enjoy collecting physical copies. It's nice to have the option to do both.

I mean, I hope you don't hate anyone for people's choices - especially since they are mutually exclusive (as in, you can sub AND buy physical games - it's a real miracle).

It's just such an odd thing for you to say as an assurance..

Nah I just hate those that call me dumb when I buy my games. It's something I've always cherished since I started gaming. Hopefully it will never get taken away.

As someone who played PC/Amiga games since the 80s.... I got some bad news for you...

Yeah gaming won't go towards a subscription only future. There will be places like Steam where you can buy your games.

If you want that to dissappear then I hate you for it.

:p

Long live buying our games.

They you'll be happy to know that there are no consoles that are sub exclusive. You can purchase or subscribe or do both. We can all rest easy now.

The costumers are choosing, they are choosing to buy games on Switch/PlayStation/Steam as well as playing F2P trash.

Between F2P games, traditional games and Gamepass like library rental subscriptions, the least disruptive and the one that has yet to prove itself viable (specially in light of all the money that was invested in it) is Gamepass. Gamepass has existed for more than 5 years already what has it changed?
