Sony is aiming to ship 30 million PlayStation 5 consoles in Fiscal Year 23 (March 2023 – March 2024), sources have said.

These figures were briefly mentioned in our exclusive report last month on a new PlayStation 5 releasing with a detachable disc drive. Since then, sources have provided more information on the anticipated PlayStation 5 sale numbers.

Production of the new detachable disc drive console is expected to start in April 2023, with the console hitting the market in September of that year, sources said.

It was said that Sony aims to sell 18 million consoles in FY22 and 30.5 million in FY23, just shy of a 70% increase YoY.

12 million of the 30.5 million consoles in FY23 will be of the “old PlayStation 5”, with that console completely ceasing production by the holiday of 2023. It’s believed that the new detachable disc drive PlayStation 5 is a means to reduce production costs. Moving forward, the company will only need to manufacture one console but have the two price points of the digital and disc versions. Presumably, this could mean that the detachable disc drive will be priced at around $100, which is currently the price difference between the digital and standard PS5. Earlier today, David Gibson, a senior analyst at MST Financial reported on Twitter that Sony’s sea shipments to the US increased 400% in September 2022 compared with September 2021.

Sony shipped an impressive 7.5 million kilograms of hardware to the US, compared with 1.5 million kilograms in the same month last year. Admittingly, these are not all PlayStation 5 consoles, but the shipment figures show the ramp-up in production and shipments following the COVID-19 supply issues. Sony Interactive reported that as of June 2022, the company has shipped over 21.7 million PlayStation 5 consoles since its launch.

If Sony hits its projected sales targets, the company could be on course to sell 70 million consoles by the start of FY24.

It does feel like a stretch or a miscommunication but will see if anyone asks them in the next earnings call.
I know Sony had said a while ago they wanted to break their all time fiscal year record, which is like 22 million or something. So 23-25? Possible I guess. Spider-man 2 coming that fall, a new design, and maybe even a price cut. But 30 million? Doubt it.

They're not gonna discuss a rumor/leak about next FY's plans during this years quarterly briefing. Even if someone bothered to ask them, they'd just give a general response.

Sony has to play catch-up now that component shortages are being dealt with and they need to get back on track to their original PS5 projections. Tom is a good source of info so I have no reason to doubt him

What is the significance of reporting the weight of hardware shipped?! What an utterly bizarre metric to quote.

That's like Capcom reporting they shipped 1 million cubic feet of game manuals last year. Like.... wut?!

With the 6nm SoC, less metal for cooling and optional disk drives they can make much smaller PS5s, I think only a little larger than Series S. That should facilitate production and shipping.

I don't buy it, but reach for the stars i guess.

I mean only last FY they missed their projections by over 3 million, obvious their was chip shortage for that year but their estimates are ambitious sometimes. Hell i'm skeptical of the 18m this fy, we are in mid october and some regions in the world stock is still anemic.

It's still a good indicator that they are finally shipping products again after the chip shortage. I do agree that they should be giving us actual hardware shipment numbers but this is a huge boost in production. PS is their biggest hardware business so its possible that most of these are PS consoles.

I do look at Japan and the 2% increase yoy and wonder if they are just shifting where they are sending their units but even then it feels a stretch. Waiting to see what the September monthly numbers look like.

Sony didn't really report it afaik It was from other sources, we will get the official numbers in 3 weeks though

Last FY component shortages blew a hole in everyone's plans. That seems to have started getting better as of July this year and Sony has stated they've secured components to meet this year's projections. We'll know more in 3 weeks when they give their quarterly report

25m is doable. 30m in a 12 month period is insanely high. That's like half the entire xbox one lifetime sales in just one year!

Sure and along with 6nm SoC they could still produce 7nm SoCs for like a year and reach that target. But it also depends on others components.

They need BIG games for people to buy the consoles at that volumes... Wo long and FF7 part 2 isn't it. They need good exclusives that make people that are not buying every game to go there and start buying...this year there were hundreds of games and I bought full price only Elden Ring and in the next month Ragnarok. Forgotten West i bought it second hand....
If there aren't games that have great context forget about it. We need also to see the Gaas games, hopefully they are interesting and not COD copies (even though they need that also)

I didn't suggest Sony reported the figures. I was asking why the person reporting on this story decided that was a meaningful figure to report on; regardless of where the figures came from.

‘Next gen’ Spider-Man 2 alone will move a shit load of consoles, throw miles, peter, and venom (and who knows who else) in a game and watch sales skyrocket. Then you have final fantasy XVI which is my most anticipated game, even above stuff like Ragnarok, and throw a really good looking factions in the mix…stellar blade. Etc

Plus PSVR2, a port of alyx…..etc. the tangible info we have right now is enough to sell a lot of consoles. So far everything they have announced so far (aside from the obvious MLB 23’) is PS5 only

Well all these games are awesome, only in February there will be 2 or 3 games that i would buy 100% but they need new customers, also some diversity in their games, i think they must make small games like Kena. That can get the females (my girlfriend and her friends loved it). Just 30 millions need you to make the extra difference to achieve it not just your best.

The massive AAA bangers going forward won't be cross-gen (Spider-Man 2, etc).

Some of the GaaS and AA level games, more than likely.
You mispelled "we know jack shit about greedy sony future plans"

2 years ago it was untinkable to have 2 giant first party ip crossgen but here we are.

At best we can hope that what you say is true, certainty is a luxury that we don't have anymore my dude.

Pixelopus and Team Asobi should be ready to reveal their new games.

If the article was "sony going to ship 40" you would say... 30-35 sure but 40 nah
No I wouldn't. I'd say this:

They’ve released at least one installment in each of their biggest franchises so far and 2 in their absolute biggest franchise when Spider-Man 2 launches.

People doensn’t necessarily look at what’s coming a year from now but also what has released since launch. In fact I think that’s the normal way to think about things when buying a console.

All of these cross gen single player games were meant for year 1. We were supposed to be past that hump by the end of 2021 and balls deep into the current gen titles by now. It's only because the pandemic smashed everything apart that things worked out this way.

It's a certainty that some of their live service games will be cross gen because they're making some that're gonna be cross platform with mobile, so why not make a PS4 version at that point. MLB will be one of them. Other than TLOU MP, every other project we're aware of that's either been announced or we have info from job postings is current gen exclusive. We don't really know enough about TLOU MP to say one way or the other.

The console is impossible to find outside scalpers and ridiculous unofficial prices so yeah 30 million is easy.

Most people buying a ps5 this holiday or next year will be spoiled with choice between whats been released and whats on ps plus extra. Lets say you hold off on buying cross gen games until you upgrade you got

  • Demon’s Souls
  • Astros Playroom
  • Miles Morales (people have probably broken down and played this by now on ps4)
  • Returnal
  • Rift Apart
  • Sackboy
  • Iki Island expansion
  • FF7 Intergrade
  • Kena
  • Horizon Forbidden West
  • Gran Turismo 7
  • God of War
  • last of us
Etc. sony has been releasing games almost non-stop either first or big 3rd party games, since launch, i dont think anyone picking up a PS5 will be wondering what to play. The only people that complain about the game selection are the multiplatform holders that have had a ps5 since day one and wait around just to play exclusives

Again, i hope you are right.

For now we only have spidey 2 and wolvy announced for nextgen but they can change their mind at any given moment, sorry if i don't trust this company anymore (even if your logic is somehow solid)

The best reasoning i can see for why spider-man and wolverine aren’t gonna be cross gen is because Rift Apart was already ps5 only.

I think any studio that has made a ps5 only game at this point def isn’t going back. That includes square enix, who made intermission ps5 only and is transitioning to Forspoken, FFXVI, and Rebirth.

Well, you're free to believe what you'd like, but I still think it's a bit of an overreaction. Hermen Hulst indicates that some more cross gen content could still come and folks lose their minds. I really don't know what people expected him to say. He's the head of PlayStation Studios, he can't say anything to put down PS4 owners because they still buy tons of games and they've got a monster of a cross-gen game about to drop. I get the feeling that folks wanted him to outright say, "fuck the PS4 and those dildos who own it! PS5 only from now on, motherfuckers!" That's just not how things work.

It is not for what he said lately dude, the damage was already done by their past actions, they can say whatever they want with their pr talks.

I need a couple of years without important games being crossgen to re-gain my trust in them.

"Damage"

Sorry, I can't help but laugh at such overly dramatic sentiments. Sony planned for year 1 of the PS5 to be filled to the brim with current gen and cross gen titles so that their entire userbase would get something exciting to play. It just happened that 3 of their heavy hitter titles got pushed to 2022 and the originally planned 2022 content got pushed to 2023, and that's where we're at. It really isn't any more complex than that.

I'm curious, if all these games had come out before the end of 2021 and we were now deep into current gen only titles with only the occasional cross-gen title here and there, how would you feel on the matter?

That big fat boy isn't shrinking close to series s anytime soon, if ever.
