Ajumajo Dracula / Castlevania Chronicles; two different remakes of the same NES OG game...but what are the best remakes Gaf?

Remakes generally go one of two ways...they either take a beloved game and reimagine it for a modern audience while keeping the spirit and vibe of the original fully intact and improve on what came before...or they totally betray the source material and dump out something that just feels like a lazy cash grab. There is rarely an option in between.

That's why the twin remakes of the original Castlevania, Akumajo Dracula on the Sharp X68000 and Castlevania Chronicles on PS1 are so amazing; they manage to take everything about the NES original that kicked off the franchise and just make it better! You know...like remakes sound :)

Better graphics, bigger levels, AMAZING music (especially MIDI on the X68000) that remakes the same tracks but with period modern hardware. Really it feels like what the designers of Castlevania WOULD HAVE MADE had they had better specs during initial development. I wont say this version negates the need to play the NES original...but it certainly surpasses it in almost every way imaginable. It certainly falls into the GOOD remake category thats for sure!

But that got me thinking GAF...what are the BEST and WORST remakes. I do love hearing everyones opinions

Now lets hope ONE DAY Konami gets back on track and stops just piping new Castlevania content into their pachislot operation. Because damn it we deserve MORE Castlevania without having to go to Japanese pachinko parlors!

Much like REmake I wouldn't say they negate the original but they are excellent.

As for worst remakes Samus Returns, REmake 3, and Shattered Memories are up there. I'd have to sit and think about other remakes which probably isn't a good sign, lol.

Just finished Demons Souls and must admit that I thoroughly enjoyed it. After watching some comparison vids, it's obvious what an upgrade this was, and a credit to Bluepoint.

For me, the only thing that would have made it better would have been the addition of more content in the form of the 6th archstone.

That feel when the console goes for 2k$ and the games are 300-500 bucks.

Especially when I lived in Japan in 2005, I saw a couple of used X68k’s in Oita’s Hard-off, for 1000 yen each in working shape. Wanted to buy one but had no way of lugging it back to my place. Also shipping them back home would’ve been insanely expensive for a student. Decided not to get one.. would’ve bought ’em both if I would’ve seen what they go for now.

That’s one I’ve yet to check out but it’s on my list

Resident Evil GameCube and Resident Evil 2 Remake are two of the best. I'm not sure if RE2 counts, as it's so different that it hardly counts as the same game.

Demon's Souls PS5 is right there too.

I love FFVII Remake, but for the 1000th time, it is not a remake, but a sequel.

GameCube REMake is def a masterclass in taking the source material and just running with it perfectly on what was then modern tech

It's crazy that it was just a few years after the original, on the next generation hardware.

Yup this gets my vote as well,it's such a masterclass upgrade.Another one that's really amazing I'd say would be the Shadow of the Colossus remake.Demon's Souls is up there as well.

As for worst ones....REmake 3 is pretty bad in that regard but the worst one has to be the XIII remake....absolutely disgusting what they did to that game.
