So what's next for Resident Evil remakes?

With Resident Evil 4, Capcom has officially finished with remaking almost every beloved entry in the RE franchise. The million dollar question is ... where do they go from here? Because that's where things get a little cloudy.

Resident Evil 5 and 6 are the next entries, but the problem is that they are relatively new compared to the other entries, to the point a remake no longer feels 100% necessary. Also, they introduced co-op online modes which utterly divided the community. Remaking them has the risk of again dividing the fanbase and again going down the road of making the series action 'horror' and utterly forgetting the 'survival' aspect, which is a road the majority of the fandom does not want the IP to go down again. And Capcom knows this, which is why so far they intend to have MP modes as spin-offs and low-budget efforts to satisfy the action fans without again 'polluting' the IPs 'core' identity.

However, we can't forget that RE5 is one of the biggest RE game sellers for Capcom. Not entirely sure but I think it's still amongst the top-three best selling RE games out there, which would entice Capcom to replicate its success. HOWEVER, they also risk (due to modern social issues) to paint a large target over their heads by the known suspects and accusing them of racial hate (it was done back then, and today it will be a lot, lot worse). So it's really a weird case and I'm not sure whether Capcom would want to make a risk like that.

In RE6's case, it's one of the worstly received RE games ever - definitely the most hated numbered entry - although it does have its fanbase - and definitely more divisive than even RE7 with its first person mode. It is the title which could benefit the most from a remake in order to solve all the gameplay issues the original had, but it's a tough sell because it's hard to pitch your worst entry deserving a remake, and on top of that ... the game is fucking huge, which would be a tremendously costly endeavour on Capcom's part to risk financial loss by remaking a game which was hated by its majority. Not to mention the fact it's quite new compared to the other, older titles.

What about other titles?

Veronica is out, for now, by official statement by the devs.

Outbreak could be next, in order to finally give the online/co-op/multiplayer RE community a solid RE entry they could really sink their teeth to. If they enrich the campaign and make it easier for a player to solo it, it could be a reality.

RE1 is a solid contender for a remake. A beloved classic, relatively short and less expensive to remake compared to the next entries, almost all monsters are more or less ready and the devs have expressed a desire to do it. I could see it happening on RE's 30th year anniversary in 2026. It's perfect, and relatively close. Only problem? It's been done, but ... almost twenty years ago. So, does it really matter, anymore?

RE0 was never remade and could use a makeover. While it never sold particularly well (which had more to do with it being a Gamecube exclusive than anything else), it's still the last RE entry of old before they went all RE4 in the main entries. There isn't a demand for this title though, and the only way I can see it happening is by process of elimination.

So.

My guess is that they will remake (at most) one more title yet (perhaps Outbreak), before remaking RE1 again for the 30th anniversary.

Thoughts? What do you think that Capcom will do, remaster-wise?

We ain't outta here in ten minutes, we won't need no rocket to fly through space
Code Veronica or RE1 remake with over the shoulder.

This.

It really doesn't mean anything for the devs to say there's "no current plans", of course they would say that, they're not gonna say "actually we're already working on it" while RE4 isn't even out yet.

But it could well be an action RE1 first. Code Veronica is the one that desperately needs it the most, there's so much good RE in there, but so much bad RE in there.

Most accurate description of CVX I've heard

I would love RE1 getting the same treatment as 2 and 3. The mansion is going to look amazing. It's always the best setting for horror games IMO, the only trope i like seeing over and over. The interiors of the castle and dollhouse were the best looking areas in RE Village and i can tell how Capcom devs loved making them too. These have elements of a mansion so I bet they really want to build one with the same engine.

However, i'm not sure if i prefer the more colorful, brighter style of the original, or the darker, less saturated look of the 2001 REmake. Maybe something in-between?

They should absolutely remake 1 and CV and give 5 and 6 a bit more time.

They should maintain 2-3 generations between the original and the remake.

Meaning this generation should include 4, CV, which is not enough, so here we should see 1 get the full remake.

Fuck the remakes. I just want a new entry, a continuation in the style (ie setting) of Resi 1, 2, and 3 (ie not Leon going to Spain to fight old men with pitchforks or Chris on a jolly to Africa).

Not sure what they would call it but I personally lost interest when they went off the rails and did away with proper zombies (of course also fuck off Resi 6, it's practically Bayonetta).

Do 1 in the OTS style for sure, then gimme a game set between 3 and 4 featuring the STARS team again. They put that tiny teaser at the end of 3 for a reason, do something with it.

Don't think RE1 needs another remake but I wouldn't mind seeing it get the RE2R treatment too

Either that or Code Veronica

Since code Veronica is out, outbreak remake or reboot for me. I’m enjoying these REmakes and want to try them in co-op

I hope your taste in women is a conseguence of the eyepatch and visual imparity :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

I like my women on the T, I'll even sneak the T-Virus in they drinks and so help me god if I don't see an eye coming out of their shoulder in a few hours lol

The more I think about it, the sure-r I become. Resident Evil 1 Re-Remake for 2026.

I wish it was RE Code Veronica and its likely they'd never really say now anyway so....yea lol I still have a feeling RE1 will be the first remake of a remake.

Likely sooner then many think. I wouldn't be shocked if we got it in 2024. We went from RE2 remake in 2019 to RE3 remake in 2020. So I wouldn't really be surprised if they again have 2 teams just working on em...speaking of teams.

Fuck the remakes. I just want a new entry

the lolz, you'll still see a new entry as the teams that do the remakes, are not the teams that make the new entries...

As to why you got RE2 and RE3 remake, but still got RE7 and RE8....

You'll just see RE4, RE1 remake etc while that same team that did RE8, does RE9, RE10 etc.

I don't really know why folks haven't figured that out lol Its not an either or, no RE game is being cancelled based on some remake or something, they are not the same teams...

You dam right, enough with the werewolves and ganados bullshit, that's not resident evil _ it's a spin-off and should have been named something else. I want them to go back to the series roots and do a proper sequel to resi3. At the same time, im all in favor of remaking the old masterpieces, and answering OP should be Resident Evil 1, no brain era. Should have been first thing to remake if you remaking a series Jesus Christ _ you too Brutus Konami.

I think RE4 will be the last remake.

Code Veronica isn't as beloved as the other entries, and I don't think they are really looking to remake the first game again.

The remakes have been following their own continuity, and remaking 1 kinda disrupts that.

5 and 6? 5 Is a possibility, 6 is not. 6 is simply way too big to remake and Capcom regrets spending so much money on it.

I think they will be looking at other spin off titles instead.

Code Veronica is the one I want. I don't know why they don't want to go there. I think CV is the true RE3 by rights.

RE0 would work as well.

5 and 6 just don't really hold up as games or hold the same place in the imaginations of fans so I wouldn't go that route.

They’ll stop with the remakes and reboot the series after 9 with an open-world/crafting AAA multiplayer action-RPG GaaS that will sell millions but hardcore fans will hate it and the cycle restarts with a remake of 5 because by then people will be nostalgic about it.

Resident Evil 1 should never be made something different than it is. That game nailed everything on the first try. The remake improved some things, while making other things worse. But Resident Evil started as an exploration horror game with some light puzzle elements and rudimentary 3D combat. It was never intended as an action game, nor as a shooter. I’d rather the series at least remembered its roots through the first game, instead of turning even that one into another shooter. That mansion was mostly empty; making it the set of another action game would not work.

RE2 and 3 were perfect for remaking, because their action-y nature was at odds with the original’s controls and gameplay. RE1’s template would never work optimally with tight rooms and corridors filled with enemies, or with fixed camera angles.

Code Veronica is a disaster of a game that I’d rather people just let go into oblivion.
But if they must remake it, hell, remake it from the ground up. Leave absolutely nothing unchanged, and pretend the original never came out like you’re doing with RE1, Capcom. We deserve this. YOU deserve this.

Bold of you to assume that there won't be a remake of Resident Evil 5 and 6, we already crossed that bridge of remaking games that aren't even 10 years old.
