[PSA] How to go on media blackout - Spoiler protection tools and youtuber blacklist

Ragnarök is upon us.

Since no publisher can ever release a game anymore without making love to clout addicted cunts on youtube, to the surprise of no one big leaks of the new God of War are starting to hit the web everywhere. So if you're hooked up to the gaming grapevine like myself and half of the people on this forum - you're almost guaranteed to have this game spoiled in the next couple of weeks - most likely by accident by browsing Twitter or Youtube. That is - unless you do something about it.

This is an edited copy-paste of a post I made on an earlier occasion. It contains all the info on how to set your browser up so it filters and blocks unwanted content. GymWolf GymWolf you're welcome.

1. Twitter - use mute words

go to More -> Settings and support -> Settings and privacy -> Privacy and safety -> Mute and Block -> Muted words - add all keywords you can think of related to the game to the list. When adding a word or a phrase - change the setting to "from anyone" just in case.

6VlQcFF.jpg
KIa9OjX.jpg
ZvZLZ3o.jpg

For GoW:R - Atreus, Freya, God of War, Kratos, Leviathan, Odin, Ragnarok, Ragnarök, Thor should do the trick.

2. WWW, Message boards, Reddit etc. - use Chrome, Install keyword-blocking extensions:

Spoiler Protection 2.0- Free image thumbnail blocker and mentions blocker. Blocks text, pictures, and embedded videos that contain any mention of keywords. You can disable some of the settings in prefs. Add all keywords and keep them all ON.

Y1SZ1r2.jpg

This is how Google and Neogaf look like with it enabled:

alqpjwD.jpg

Tp1jdSw.jpg

ROeOwXb.jpg

Alternatively or in combo:

Unspoiler - best used with non-generic keywords (character names etc.) and allows whitelisting urls. Very similar to Spoiler Protection 2.0, I always enable both after smashing that URL from clout junky den with a double rubber for extra protection.

I don't use Facebook but I think Spoiler Protection 2.0 handles just like it does Reddit.

3. Youtube - use mix of keywords and channels blacklist

While Twitter word mute usually works just fine, youtube is a tougher nut to crack due to an army of people who literally make their living on clickbait thumbnails with pre-release or early spoilers. Most difficult to dodge with keyword blockers due to their ingenuity in video naming and the amazing youtube recommended algorithm, that somehow always manages to shove some of this shit into the homepage according to the tags you follow. Up until recently, functions "not interested" and "don't recommend channel" simply didn't work.
Even if repeated on multiple videos from the same source followed by "block user" in the channel "about" card flag. Some of those guys are just too big in subs and just following gaming tag on youtube means you'll eventually see them popping up, just because you infected your account by clicking on their video embedded elsewhere, like of that ultra bellend shirrako whose share here should be a bannable offense.

So here is something you can do to: enable tool assisted channel ban sending those fine auteurs of gaming khantent on a GTFO trip out of your tube forever.

Use Blocktube or Channel Blocker

or both at once because why not. I would NOT recommend adding Video Blocker to the mix as it constantly begs you for donations and breaks youtube search giving you zero results every time for some reason.

During a game leak outbreak, start with keywords. A lot of that will already be handled by Spoiler Protection 2.0 but if you know you've been sticking your mouse pointer in all of the wrong places and just need that extra shielding, do it. Notice extra prefs at the bottom and SAVE.

tIeALjz.jpg

The most important thing tho is to have a good, long and permanent blacklist of channels that routinely spoil games in thumbnails and/or video descriptions and expand it whenever you bump into one doing it.

Here is mine:

Boss Fight Database
Zanar Aesthetics
Shirrako
AFGuidesHD
RabidRetrospectGames
MKIceAndFire
MrSkillToKill2
DCReplayHD
Jekavac TV
lzuniy
xLetalis
MrRetroKid91
MrSkillToKill2
Kashimaro Clickclick
Gameplay4You

Feel free to copy and share the names of channels that should be there in the thread and have a nice day.

I know it's a bit tl:dr so just to make sure this point got across - if you know youtube channels that everyone would be better off just blocking, leave a comment and I'll add them to the OP list.

Good stuff OP. Already got a video recommendation for a GoWR fight yesterday, you know stuff is going to start leaking in the next few days until launch.

This is such a weird thing to say
The story in the last one was OK at best. The writing hasn't evolved that much.

This isn't like some great movie with a huge twist, if anything it's on a lower or equal level to those terrible Marvel movies.

It's more about the gameplay experience which will be great.

I mean the mid part of the last game was OKish, but then the story dragged until the random last minute twist at the end that felt like it was scribbled at the last minute to lead into a new game.

that seems like an awful lot of work. if you're excited about a game then just don't be stupid going into clickbait youtube videos about that game and don't read any news articles about it. don't click into threads on here about it.

No it doesn't work like that at all. It's enough just to be on Youtube or Twitter and browse gaming content to get this shit thrown in front of your face by the auto-recommendation system.

Spoken like someone that will inevitably try to spoil it for someone :cautious:
Nope, that's petty bullshit.

These people creating a new phobia of spoilers that I'm sure tiktok or FB will create a name for is just plain stupid. This is simply a pathetic example of how attached to social medias people have become.

"Spoiling" the story will not impact the gameplay at all, that's my point, the story isn't good enough to worry about that, we're not talking about the ending to a well crafted, extremely well written book or movie. Spoiling something like Shutter Island(not an excellent movie, but very well written, this is merely the first that sprang to mind) where the twist completely changes the way you view the movie and changes your perspective of the main character, something that you can "experience" on the 2nd viewing if someone spoiled that, that would be shitty, but for this game nope.

The twist in the last God Of War was a lazy last minute thought, that changed really nothing at all, it was merely the Marvel style "bread crumb" to get you to buy the next game, with no real fleshing out of what it meant or what it could mean, there were no good details to perhaps allude to the fact that the twist was going to happen earlier in the game.

"Spoiling" Ragnarok's story would be the equivalent of telling someone that read Playboy for the articles what all the articles were about before they got to read them.

The aspect of God Of War 2018 that was great were the voice acting performances, and any spoiler won't impact that in any meaningful way. The voice acting was top notch.

Stop aggrandizing shit that doesn't deserve it, and if you think God Of War 2018 had a great story, you need to read a book, or watch some good movies. It was better than most video game stories, but that's not saying anything.

If Im on a serious media blackout I have a couple simple rules for YouTube (I don't really use Twitter)

1. Never use search words that involve the name of the game or movie for at least a few days before its release

2. Make a habit of permanently blocking ALL channels that post spoiler thumbnails within the first few weeks of a game or movies release, even for games or movies you seen already

It's worked so far.

Same, hence pt.3 in OP. If you have them listed somewhere - paste it here and I'll update

I can confirm that Spoiler Protection works pretty well, I've used it in the past. Just be aware that SP 2.0 obviously doesn't differentiate between stuff you'd want to see (a GAF'er saying they're excited about the game) and a full-blown spoiler. But it will protect you from some nonsense along with inexplicably blocking out large portions of text because it contains a certain keyword, etc.

Nice advice. Unfortunately I use YT on consoles a lot, and thus its seemingly unavoidable at times. I've had only one lately though, and I was just like jeez, I never searched for the game ever, never seen it in a list but in the recs scrolling to the side there was a LAST BOSS+ENDING with huge spoiler screenshot and I was freakin' mad. Like who wants that? So freaking stupid. One would think after how many decades of spoilers on the web that some sites would have a basic option for stuff like that behind a wall that people would have to actively search out to find. Instead no, shadowban certain content and creators for reasons. They have the power but no desire it seems.

Was there a story worth spoiling in 2018?

With Ragnarok, I feel like the spoiler will be the fight between Thor and Kratos and whether or not Kratos dies at the end of the game (he won't, but he should).

I've been watching Woolie play Bayo 2 recently and 'first ten minutes of Bayonetta 3' showed up in my recommendations yesterday. Fortunately the thumb wasn't too spoilery. Check and delete your YouTube history accordingly if you want to use it in the run-up to a major release. And it goes without saying- avoid the comments.

the story isn't good enough to worry about that

You don't get to decide what constitutes spoilers for others.

I'm using Spoiler Protection 2.0 on Chrome (PC). It's really good. Now I just need to use Firefox on Android to use the same extension lol

You don't need any tools for this, just you know use common sense it's not that hard to avoid spoilers.
