[VG Tech] A Plague Tale Requiem PS5 vs Xbox Series X|S Frame Rate Comparison

The versions tested were 1.2.0.0 on the Xbox Series consoles and 1.002.000 on PS5. 120hz footage was captured at 1440p on PS5 and Series X.

Timestamps:
00:00 - 40fps Mode
15:44 - 30fps Mode

PS5 and Xbox Series X in both modes render at a resolution of 2560x1440 and use a form of temporal upsampling to reconstruct a 3840x2160 resolution.

Xbox Series S in both modes renders at a resolution of 1600x900 and use a form of temporal upsampling to reconstruct a 1920x1080 resolution.

PS5 and Xbox Series X have some graphical improvements compared to Xbox Series S in areas such as: draw distance, ambient occlusion, shadow quality and SSR quality.

The 40fps mode is enabled by starting the game while outputting at 120hz on the Xbox consoles. On PS5 the 40fps mode is run by enabling 120hz in the PS5 video settings and then running the game on a compatible 120hz display.

Still haven’t played the first one, but claimed it on PS plus a while back. I’ll wait for a solid 60fps patch before playing this anyway.

Waiting pays off again, a pattern is emerging here……

Maybe Asobo should patch the PS5 version to run @1080p.

1440p seems to be too much for this console.
What? I thought I’d stumbled across another shitty Twitter take.

This is more than likely less than ideal optimisation rather than anything specifically related to hardware. There are better looking games pushing higher frame rates on both consoles.

As much as i like the game - its gotta be a locked 40 if you're gonna aim for it. A sub par 40 fps experience is not gonna fly.

Drop the resolution down to 2240x1260 if you have to. Also if the PS5 can do 40 fps, the SeX can do more. If both are around 40, that kinda hints at weak optimisation

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
Game needs some optimization, stuttering and frame-tears.
I know here they reporting none but it does happen often.
And I don't usually notice them when these guys report on them unless they're really bad.
So it's odd that they haven't seen them.
The upscaling method is noticeable with hair because how fine they are displayed here.
Other then that the game is beautiful.

I'm playing it currently, game is not optimized on PS5, there are sudden frame rate drops and stutters. It's obviously still fully playable but I expect them to improve things with further patches.

Frame-time stats show the game is a broken unoptimized mess on PS5. There shouldn't have so much >50ms frame-time spikes on PS5. Those look more I/O or engine related stutters. The devs probably optimized the game solely on Xbox Series which was easy as they already know very well the hardware (well APIs) after developing Microsoft Flight simulator.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
Asobo is Microsoft spy confirmed.

Perhaps reduce the number of rats help? i thought the PS5 ver has more rats or something

I just can't get other how irritating the image quality is when the game is in motion. Looks great when you stand still but as soon as you move the amount of reconstruction artifacts are obnoxious imo.

Maybe can be related with the fact sx have a 20% more gpu power... maybe...

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Some folks in the Review topic were saying PS5 version drops to what feels like ~10 fps when the rats appear. The extra GPU grunt helps out the SX here.

Turn off the motion blur. The game's IQ is fantastic but the motion blur implementation is poor.

Frame-time stats tell us that the PS5 sometimes needs 200% more time to render the same frame. It's obviously not caused by GPU 15% "weaker". It's engine related and lacks optimization on PS5 which makes sense as it's their first PS5 game.

It's not, the first plague tale game was on both PS4 and got a PS5 patch as well. Same for The Crew 2.

This is the first game in a while where xbox has had a clear lead. Un-Optimized or not, the xsx has a 10% lead on average.

The numbers here are similar to tlou2’s 40 fps mode albeit at a lower resolution. ND ended up removing the 40 fps mode, no? Tflops matter.

mind explaining this to me? Alex said something similar about Gotham Knights but I thought Frametimes were a RESULT of framerates fluctuating. How do 50+ frametimes indicate that this isnt due to frames dropping below 30 fps? (down to 22 fps in this case)

Based on PC version rats are taxing CPU the most, maybe they are using smt off mode that overall gives SX some MHz advantage or it's a combination of both CPU and GPU advantages.

Or this game just isn't well optimized, who knows.

Interesting, I would of thought rendering upwards to 300,000 rats would hit the GPU and memory bandwidth given the rats have simplistic AI?

Real next gen games are trickling out. Breathtakingly gorgeous game. Hopefully they can patch the ps5 version but it does seem like xbox has been flexing quite a bit in 2022.

Series s once again delivers some great solid performance. Rat mode engage! The rats are taking over.
Series S should be performing better tbh. The resolution was downgraded to 900p or 1.44 million pixels compared to PS5's 3.7 million pixels. 2.56x Difference. Thats pretty much in line with their tflops difference which is 2.55x. So why the need to downgrade Draw Distance, Shadows, Ambient Occlusion, and SSR quality? The game probably wouldve been sub 720p had they kept the visual fidelity the same.

Yeah need to see some direct comparison screenshot but I expect these cuts with series s. Whatever works best for performance and development.

Going by the video it looks like crazy alpha sections just buckle on the ps5, in the grass early on in the fire section. It's basically 30 fps. Is this where we are seeing a benefit of a wider gpu vs narrow?

Tried to play on my Series X, uninstalled and put it on my PC, much smoother experience.

Honestly the game just runs like dog shit on both... I can't believe people can stand it.

It’s a really pretty game. I keep stopping to spin the camera and take it all in, good stuff! Series X @ 40fps btw

So SS is 900P, that makes more sense that PS5 and SX can only do 1440P.

SX seems to be running some 10% faster in 120hz mode. The game is clearly not optimized, here is 5700 XT at ultra settings and fps is all over the place.
