Sony PlayStation is building a new internal game development team in partnership with PSS Visual Arts, an award-winning, full-production group, that specializes in Animation, Motion Capture, Cinematics, Art, and Scanning. This is the same world-class team known for its contributions to the Last of Us franchise!

This high visibility project is being developed in collaboration with Naughty Dog. Though currently unannounced, we have a clear vision and plan to release. Using our existing expertise and premier talent, we will guarantee a high visual quality bar for the game and a compelling experience for our players.

Our team is seeking a dedicated, focused, and self-motivated producer with a broad proven experience and a track record of building processes to help the team achieve its highest potential. As the ideal candidate, you will be proficient in all aspects of AAA game production and management. You are an organized and attentive leader; strategic, and thoughtful in all interactions with both internal and external partners. Most importantly, your experience will guide the team's cultural growth and abilities.

Fuck. That sloth is so cute. Anyway, sonys really investing in internal productions. I mean they have for awhile but this is great news.

I get that it's a support team but that's their plan. Get nixxes to do pc ports. Bluepoint was given a project and did great so now they are getting promoted.

There's a plan. I know it's not exciting but this frees up those studios to work less constrained and give the "grunt" work to studios specializing in those aspects.

I think they are still working on the common Playstation engine but even if they aren't this is the type of collaboration that Sony wants between teams. They spent all that money to get destiny 2 but I think it was more valuable to them to get the know how of multiplayer.

Remember gaikai? Same shit. Buy someone who knows what they are doing and let them help you. Gaikai is an example of it not working out great but thats their philosophy

This studio isn't that new, this Sony Visual Arts Service Group spinoff team existed during several years and already released their first project: the TLOUP1 remake, which btw was even pitched by them even if codeveloped with ND.

Does this seal the deal?

Jim Ryan greatest leader in PlayStation history? Guy should have been put in charge 10 years sooner. He's quite literally PlayStations Caesar Augustus.
This team was created before the Jim Ryan era. In fact, when the Jimbo era started and Hermen was protomoted to head of PS Studios, he saw the project of theor TLOU1 remake for the first time, didn't like it and considered they had spended too much resources on it for the type of project it was.

And asked these Sony VASG to go back to their original support team role for this project and asked ND -who until then had a support role providing material, overviewing and supporting- to lead the rest of the development.

If they are hiring a producer now it means they are working on another project. Which could be a new remake, a brand new game or simply the TLOUP1 remake PC port.

My personal bet is that they are working both in the TLOUP1 PC port and in a PS5 (+ a year or so later PC) SKU of TLOU2. And that after it they'd remake the first 3 Uncharteds to sell them separatedly on PS5 and some time later PC.

Uncharted 5 in collaboration with Naughty Dog? Seems the best outcome given that ND is busy with TLOU Online and their new IP.

The problem with this is the same issues The Initiative has. There just isn't enough talent out there for AAA game designers and developers.

Starting a new studio is fine and all, but staffing it with enough quality talent is no small hurdle.

Didn't they already try that with the rumored new San Diego team that was working on Uncharted 5 and then quietly got shut down?

Bend were working on a new Uncharted in collab with Naughty Dog up until early 2021 when they asked to work on their own original project.

I always presumed ND was bringing Uncharted back in house as they're fully multi project now and they re-hired Shaun soon after Bend stopped working on Uncharted. Maybe this is a part of that process to make a new Uncharted or maybe it's something else, who knows.

New studios try all the time and fail. Maybe this one has more experience already

No, I don't mean just a new studio. I meant new studio working with Visual Arts, collaborating with ND, to work on new Uncharted or something similar. That's essentially what the San Diego one was. In fact, the head of that studio was Michael Mumbauer, who was the senior director of Sony Visual Arts.

This studio already has 200 people. They only work as support for other studios though.

Their last of us remake project wasn’t properly funded by Sony. Only a few devs worked on it before naughty dog took over. But they definitely have enough people to make a new game.
