God of War Ragnarök – Hands-on gameplay report

How are the graphics? So far all promotional material from makes the game look exactly the same as the prior title.
Your post answers its own question - it's a great looking game, but it same that looking game you've played 4 years ago with maybe a slight improvements.

You have to realize this game started development basically after GoW 2018 came out on same platform which is now almost a decade old.

I was hoping they added additional tweaks to the final build of the game, but too bad!

If you want a next gen game it would not have released this year and may have not been as ambitious and polished in terms of variety and scope
The problem is that this game already took 4.5 Years to make. If you are expecting 6 years for next gen games to come out then when is their next game coming out? 2028?

I'm surprised it took so long given they've used the exact same engine without increasing visual quality.

But its possible the project was badly managed. There is a documentary on God Of War 2018 featuring Cory Barlog. It took them forever to make the E3 promo, and even then they had a huge task ahead of them with the final game.

I wonder if it was the same issue here - taking forever to actually translate ideas into a working product.

But there shouldn't be any excuse in taking that long to develop a game. Stop adding pointless filler content and stop making your games open world and maybe we won't have bloated dev times.

Mind you, GG and Insomniac managed to produce games at reasonable dev times.

I remember GG continued to polish Killzone 2, where they often showed older footage in promotional videos. Final product looked better.
That was a different developer for one. Second, it was PS3 game and PS3 was infamous for its horrendous architecture that gave developers a ton of issues trying to solve it and take advantage of it and it took a while to figure it out. Majority of 3rd party titles had a lot of problems making the game run well and optimized with decent image quality. And third, Killzone 2 was also not a cross-gen title unlike God of War Ragnarok.

As I've said previously it's a game made to be able to run and function properly without any hitches on a console with 1.84 of GPU power and a crappy Jaguar X86 and was released 9 years ago and that's that. This is not THE Next-Gen God of War visual spectacle that you are hoping for, that will either be a PS5 end life cycle or a PS6.

Definitely. You look at HFW and it took 5 years to make basically the same game, but with a different story. No massive changes in combat, level or mission design.

Most of the time games take long because they are stuck in pre-production hell for years. When it comes down to actually creating levels and cutscenes, they can do it within 2 years. Ive seen several video game documentaries where studios like GG, Bioware and ND would basically start full production and finish the game in 18-24 months. The real time sink is spent on pre-production which is laying down the ground work and settling on combat design. That work shouldve been done already thanks to GOW1.

The only other thing could be that they are working on those big epic setpieces like the Titan battles that took 6 months to make. Maybe the game is full of them. GOW 2018 didnt really have those big setpieces. Even the first stranger battle didnt have that epic feeling.

That would be very cool and probably worth the wait. I miss those epic fights from the prev games.

From what we've played early on, a bit too much imo.
