Phil Spencer acknowledges ‘it’s been too long’ since Xbox’s last big first-party game

I was just responding to the post that said there's zero first party, which is not true.

I can answer your question though on why it's "acceptable output." Gamepass. Without GP Xbox gamers would be revolting. Some are still not pleased I'm sure. But I'd say most GP subscribers are tolerating the slower first party output for now because the GP output is so heavy that it's hard to play everything already. You can say that's a dodge, but that's just a description of what it's like when I turn on my Xbox all of 2022. Kind of a desperate scramble to play things before they leave GP, and barely accomplishing that. That goes a long way on buying them time. Trying to beat Forgotten City today, before getting to Nobody Saves the World, Signalis, and Plague Tale 2 soon. Pentiment next month. Tons of other GP games in the backlog I want to play. Haven't really gotten into Scorn yet. High on Life next month. Wo Long next year.

I don't think anyone is saying their FP output it amazing right now. It's mostly just a big group of people that agree it's been ridiculously slow.

But as I've said for a while now, it's objectively a fact that FP games are coming at some point. It's just undeniable. Too many studios. So if you've accepted the fact that it's going to work out eventually, and you're fine with the current line-up on GP as is, then it's not that hard to see why some people are landing on "acceptable," and waiting for them to get their major games out.
I've been eating like a fat fuck all year thanks to Gamepass, I literally only bought Elden Ring and Cult of the Lamb this year.

Oh, I’m sure some do want them to release unpolished games for forum banter.
It's not even a matter of polish.

Big open world games with AAA production values and a lot of content between main campaign and side content need a lot of time to be made.

All sony games needed at least 4-5 years if not more to being made, both horizon games, tsushima, days gone, tlou 2, spiderman etc.

Even that barren, boring piece of shit of death stranding requested 3 years to be made and it has nowhere near the content of more serious open world games.

Do people expect sony level games from M in 2-3 years of development?? It is not gonna happen and there is nothing phil can do about this.

I would not even fucking accept a gigantic fable game with less than 5 full years of development, even 6 because the team never did an action rpg before.

People need to be realistic in their expectations.

So it’s fine to buy the most powerful console ever with 12teraflops and not expect big triple A games?

Thank god I didn’t fall for it. I’ll be playing Ragnarok next week on the weaker PS5.

Most games in the pipeline are not aiming at Sony level of production, i think. They don't have the studios for that, especially not the supporting studios and synergy Sony has. Fable seems like an exception to me.

I really do hope that most of their studios are being pushed to their limit though, 6 years for Fable with the need of building an entire team is acceptable, but some other studios don't really have this excuse.

Just buy more studios Phil

There's always "next year"

I feel your post is sarcastic...but since a lot of people truly believe this, buying more stuff isn't the answer. They need to have a more streamlined production. They are not organized, and the more teams Xbox has to lead, the worst it gets.

Sony and Nintendo only acquire companies close to them for that reason. I remember even after the Bungie acquisition Jim saying he would spend the next few months supporting them on that acquisition.

Let's look at this this way...Xbox probably had more exclusive titles during the beginning of the Xbox One gen then even this one with a lot less studios. This was during the previous CEO's years. How did this happen?

It's been a year since their last AAA title...and it's still going to take like 6 months for the next one to come out. I've never seen such a drought of games from Xbox. Has this ever happened before? The fact Gamepass is failing every expectation to MS says it all. They really thought it would be enough to throw billions at 3rd party games to have the service running for this drought...and it's backfiring.

People can scream Phil is great all they want and Gamepass IS good value and he IS doing good things...but it takes a lot more than creating a service that any trillion dollar company could...it's amusing to me that the central thing about this business is what Xbox is failing to deliver: videogames. It will always be about videogames.

Playstation and Nintendo already got this decades ago...

I feel like the media isn’t being loud or giving Phil shit about the lack of games. I’m sure it would’ve been making headlines if PlayStation didn’t release games.
The media would be laughed at for repeating some of the stupid posts in this thread. Professional journalists are smarter than the average Neogaf poster and even just a few minutes of research would kill any sort of "Where are the games?" story. The simple answer is that 5 years ago Xbox had only a few first party studios and very little funding. That has obviously changed and now they have the biggest first party infrastructure out of the big 3, but games still take time to make and Covid made things even harder.

The post above is a prime example...

Oh come on, you can’t be serious. I know they will be rolling out games soon but 2022 is a write off for MS.

You can see when they started to feel the covid related delays in late 2021/2022

Multiple AAA games from 2022 were delayed in 2023. I said as much in my post.

Xbox never had a lot of internal studios in its lifetime, it never stopped them from releasing games with partners. It has nothing to do with Covid, except Halo which was a disaster long before Covid they had not planned a single game for their line up outside deals with indie devs. They opened their first showcase of the Xbox Series with Bright Memory Infinite, it's completely insane but people are defending this and moving forward everytime.

I can see your point but there is nothing phil can do, you REALLY don't want him breathing on the neck of developers everyday and having a shitty, rushed, unpolished game as a result.

If by the end of the gen all M big games are gonna be mid, i'm gonna be the first to rip a new one to phil, don't worry about that.

What is there to defend? Yes, the last few years have been very inconsistent, but everyone can see the work (and money) that Xbox is putting into their first party output. Is everyone supposed to just dwell on the past while ignoring what's happening now? (Obviously, the console warriors on here are getting in their last "Xbox has no games" concern trolling while they can though...)

I want the 2004-2010 Xbox release cadence back.

The fact he needs to admit this after Halo Infinite is pretty damning for 343. Starfield looks great, but I don’t see the release cadence getting its stride until late 2023.

Phil Spencer: "Xbox needs big first-party games"

Also Phil Spencer: "Exclusives Aren’t The Future While Company Buys Up Exclusives" / "Exclusives are counter to what gaming is all about." (Starfield and The Elder Scrolls VI console-exclusive to Xbox)

Also Phil Clown Spencer: "Exclusives have been the backbone of our industry for a very long time"

I can't debate with these corporation clowns. I prefer playing and enjoying good games instead, everywhere

He needs to ensure they have the resources needed. He went with contractors for Halo Infinite and it blew up in his face. So what does he do when Initiative finally needs to go into full production for Perfect Dark? He contracts an ENTIRE studio instead of spending the last 4 years building up Initiative. Especially weird considering Crystal Dynamics was on sale for rather cheap. He simply chose to contract them instead.

Super weird and I have no idea why 4 years after Ninja Theory and Obsidian were acquired, we havent seen any next gen games from them. Both released extremely underwhelming games in 2019 that shouldve been cancelled. Bleeding Edge was absolute trash while outer worlds was exceedingly mediocre. Not worth a first party release. Go back and make it look AAA first. Have some standards.

Phil is responsible for having PG waste their time on a LAST GEN Horizon 5. Game started dev in 2018 AFTER Phil had revealed next gen Project Scarlett. Why? Make it next gen or give the Fable team a full team to get the game out by 2022.

Phil doesnt have to stand over their shoulders, he needs to add more shoulders and give them the money and time they need. The whole point of Bethesda being bought out by a trillion dollar company was that they would no longer be held back by lack of bodies and get games out faster. The game getting delayed is on Phil because he didnt go out there and get them the sattletite studios or help from internal first party studios they needed to ship their game on time.

Yeah well, I ain’t buying an Xbox anytime soon.

(I was really tempted when I saw the reveal back at the Game Awards with Hellblade 2)

I think MS maybe should have green-lighted development of non-open world games before the gen began, to fill the void, similar to R&C, or Returnal, or at least money-hatted a temp console exclusive or two. As long as the greenest of rats are saying ‘everything is fine’, then they aren’t going to put the effort in really, that’s how it feels anyway.

Every Xbox owner is happier with the direction Xbox has taken since he's been at the helm.
As an Xbox owner, who was a huge 360 fan, and got both an Xbox One and Series X at launch, I can guarantee you this statement is not true.

Phil talks and for some reason people eat it up. But the amount of games I want to play on the Xbox has only gone down since he's taken over.

Hopefully they put some serious work into improving their output over the next few years. Another year like this or 2020 wpuld be unacceptable

Well yeah must be one of the slowest years ever for a 1st party publisher. Have they had anything besides Grounded and Deathloop this year?

Can't wait for Pentiment. More of that please.

It's probably gonna be the best written game of the year.

As Dusk falls, Pentiment, Hot Wheels Forza. Unfortunately a bunch of stuff that should have been out by now, or coming very soon i-e Starfield got pushed to next year.

There's been a lot of debate about XBOX first party output. THe fact that Phil Spencer himself calls Covid an excuse while directly referencing God OF War just ended a lot of those debates.

Two different paragraphs. He didn’t reference Ragnarok while talking about the COVID related delays.
Not to mention GOW was originally supposed to come out In 2021.

I'm absolutely shocked as to why MS doesn't invest more in Japan. Japanese devs tend to be more predictable in consistent output of games. MS had some great collaborations with Japanese devs during the Xbox 1/360 years but all of that just died out. It makes Phil's words fall somewhat short when he can throw 70 billion dollars at Bobby Kotick but can't sign some deals with Japanese devs.

The only thing i want from phil is to give big budgets to his teams, starfield still looks like your average bethesda game and redfall still looks like your average arkane game.

I was expecting for these team to do a sony jump in production values but it doesn't look like that.

It was the main reason why i was happy that M bought all these studios, to give them a big ass budget.

Because theres been 8 forza games already, on top of 5 spinoffs
8 games in 18 years and all of them where great whats the problem with that? And again the last one released 6 years ago. There are 8+ mario kart games, 8+ GT games, 6 GOW games,... and all of them where good, why stop making them. Also you where hyped for GT7 and said that GT7 is the most fun game you played in years and that one released this year and ironically its the 8th title in the primary releases outside the 6+ secondary releases in GT series.

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
Regardless of exclusives there’s things Xbox does well it’s part of being a console.

Gran Turismo has been around since the 90’s (almost a decade before Forza) and the first mario kart came out in 92, the fact that both those franchises have the same amount of games as just the mainline Forza Motorosport series proves my point.

You still need 4-5 years for non open world games with crazy production values, gow and tlou2 are not open world games.

Money is important thats for sure but i think that Sony studios have more talented people.
