So close to the FIVE HUNDRED AND NINETY NINE DOLLARS
In all seriousness thts pretty expensive. I understand the tech is pretty good for vr etc, but ultimately it’s vr and in uk a cost of living crisis. A luxury attachment for sure.

It's a decent value for what you're getting, but it automatically limits the sales to a very niche subset of customers.

Sony must've known this but were apparently willing to take that gamble.

Yeah but Valve is releasing a new headset next year and Quest 3 is coming

Quest 3's price will be quite important, I think. They need to try and keep it in the same ballpark as where the 2 launched at, to maintain market share. Have a feeling it'll be a fair bit higher though, given the cost of living crisis. I'll certainly be looking at buying it over PSVR2 though, because it'll offer a lot more flexibility.

The Quest 2's specs and screens pale compared to this. They even increased their price by $100. Only thing going for it is wireless. Wait until you see the price of Quest 3 that will be more comparable screen/tech wise.
I get that -- but that's the thing, The Meta Quest will have the 'no additional hardware' thing going for it, even if it ends up more expensive than the PSVR2 -- no way it'll be more than the cost of PSVR2 + PS5 (over 1k USD) -- and it will be able to play older Rift games (I assume) -- which the PSVR2 will not.

Man those shovelware launch titles.

This is exactly what is putting me off. The price isn't a problem for me personally, but the content is. Hell I'm close to selling my PS5 because of the lack of games that interest me.

This year I've only played Horizon Forbiden West, Gaurdians of the Galaxy and preordered God of War Ragnarok. Next year will be an avalanche of games but only six maybe seven interest me.

Does Quest 2 work on the PS5?

I kind of expected a lower price, even though the price increase of the PS5 suggested another direction from the kind of affordable PS VR1. Beside the display nothing in the tech is actually expensive and if they want to finally actually hit mass market this seems doing the opposite which cripples its support right from the get go. Certainly not cheap and with that still lackluster portfolio of announced games and imho entirely stupid separation in again VR and non-VR games, instead of requiring at least 3D cinema mode (or providing it on system level), hard sell. Also the under the radar approach of no fanfare blog post annoys me very much.
PC compatibility could save my interest (did they say anything regarding that? and GT7 or a revamped Dreams?), otherwise not justifiable as of right now. Maybe a PS5+VR bundle with some proper savings, since I am still waiting for availability of the main hw.
Also people with "no pc support semantics "

They manage to get psvr1 work with PC. This will be easy
who?
all I ever read was that some people had some progress launching trinus or steam vr or whatever but I have not read comments about it works with this, this, this and this etc. otherwise I would have connected it to my PC already.
It should work, of course, but without official support, it is at the mercy of some enthusiast fans, who might or might not make it happen depending if the right people work on it.

Damn thats alot more than i expecting i was thinking 399, 499 tops.

Im usually a day one adopter of all things tech. But 549 means 600 usd after tax and thats not including games. So thats going to be over $700 for me. Going have to think twice, no longer an impulse autobuy for me especially for something that would be seldomly used.

And another February release...

And this is freaking expensive. It will have its audience, but this will be more limited in reach than the first PSVR

Huh? I'm confused here. That's never been the argument I'm making. I'm talking about VR as a standalone concept. If you're dying to play Sony/exclusive PSVR games, then sure, that's your only option, but if you're just trying to get into VR in general, this does not seem like a viable product for most.

Edit - ah, I see, I should have clarified, the Quest 2 (and assuming the Quest 3) can play old Quest/Rift games. PSVR2 cannot play PSVR games. Backwards compatibility is super important to me, personally, which definitely influences my views.

To be fair I got an inking of this when Sony announced the 200+ controller with a bunch of people braying "DAY ONE". I'm honestly wondering if its worth setting up a study to see how much of a connection between these people and the Destiny 2 playerbase there is.
Bro, people were saying DAY ONE to $1500-$2000 graphics cards so they can play their PS5/XSX/S specc'ed games with more frames. It is what it is.

What if ... lets say a person only owns ... ya know ... a PlayStation console...

PSVR2 allows you to control the game with your eyes.

Firewall uses eye tracking to select weapons. Look and select.

Sony had a version of Infamous running on a PS3 at GDC like a decade ago where the right stick was mapped to your eyes.

Yeah, that sounds good and all, but ultimately, you’ll still use the controllers a majority of the time. And whatever PSVR2 will have, it will still be wired. I can’t stress how much of an immersion breaker that can be in certain games. It’s the central thing that puts me off making the move over to it. I’ve got used to having nothing getting In the way, and freedom to move over a wide space. Going back to being tethered is just such a huge step backwards.

This could be $400 or $700 and it wouldn’t matter to me because there’s absolutely no compelling games that are on the platform. They need a killer-app, or at least something people can be excited about (Astrobot Sequel?… anything?).

I might even buy the unit if it had backward compatibility so I could check out the few great PSVR1 games. But here, they’ve giving me absolutely zero reason to pick this up.

I am a little befuddled by the price. It would seem to me the controllers are the most expensive part. Whats the price on a pair of those alone, $120-$150?

Whats in the inside that's causing it to cost so much? Are they just trying to recoup R&D? I mean there is no process chipset, storage medium, or battery that would increase the cost like standalone systems. Its basically a pocket monitor no?

Is PSVR2 wired? I hadn't heard that

I mean...is it expensive? Yeah. But when you look at those specs it's hardly expensive. I would imagine Sony won't be making money at selling this at that price tbh.

This is not a standalone concept though. This is for people who own a PS5.

We heard these same arguments for PSVR and Sony seemed pleased with its performance there.

I get that too, but let's, for arguments sake, say the Quest 3 is the same price as the PSVR2 -- unless you're dying for the exclusive games there, or refuse to engage Meta, the obvious choice will be Quest 3

How much is the Quest 2 now?

The standard cost for the Oculus Quest 2 sits at £399 / $399 for the 128GB model, and £499 / $499 for the 256GB version, so make sure you're not paying more than the standard price for the headset by itself

How expensive is the Quest 3?

The headset is said to cost between $300 - $500

Quest 3 incoming at $300....:messenger_grinning_smiling:

That's fair, there's obviously a market for this, and I'm sure people way smarter than me have figured this whole thing will probably be profitable -- but it just strikes me as a "Why would you get X when Y does more" kinda thing

That said, I'm not here to try and police what people enjoy/buy -- If this is the kinda thing you're into, great! I hope it succeeds in the same vein I hope all VR succeeds. It's a fantastic concept and tool.

Why?

Serious question - do we have reason to believe 3 will have the processing power to match PSVR2 without being tethered? Short of that, the obvious choice seems to me to depend on whether someone is primarily console player or pc for most people.

I like wires. If I buy this I'll add more.

Xduw79O.gif

Yep, okay. If playing VR games with a wire trailing down your back or side, that gets in the way, isn't an issue for you, then cool. I can't stand it though. Been playing wirelessly for long enough now to know how much of a pain the arse a wire can be, when you're immersed in a VR environment.

Speculation at this point, which is obviously moot until the specs/price are revealed. For all I know, maybe Meta goes "fuck you if you owned a previous headset. Re-buy everything! And you need this special 'quest box' to play things in 4K"

I'd have the same complaints then about the Quest 3, though :messenger_tears_of_joy:

People do realize Resident Evil 8 and Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners 2, Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy and No Mans Sky are part of the launch (window) line up as well.
You have to look at this as if this was a console launch line used is it worth buying for that? Because this is a console price and has to be looked at in that way. Imma need a GOW or TLOU VR game caliber game to be sold on this. 550 is more than I paid for my PS5!

That's a very hard sell imo, the best games for it will probably end up being re8 & RE4Remake too, what I'd personally enjoy more with a controller. (I'm sure they will be great vr experiences too like 7)

I feel like they should've shown off some heavy hitters game wise (like re4/8 vr gameplay/trailer)

or whatever else they have planned, as I can't imagine the games above are going to entice people to drop £500+ for a vr device.

Edit: after actually watching the trailer for the above games.

Do we even know how well this works yet?

Sorry, this sounds like a pukefest. Are you just here to shill streaming or something?
I have two experiences with streaming, one with the Xcloud and the other with Shadow PC. Both worked great. I don’t think most give streaming a fair chance.

But in this case, wireless VR is what I’m “shilling” more for. I wonder if Sony ever thought to try to have their next VR headset stream video to the headset from the PS5.

I find it baffling that in a world where you can wirelessly play Half Life Alyx on ultra settings at 120hz flawlessly - the PSVR2 is going to be wired only.
