[Forbes] PlayStation Is Still A Hit Machine While Xbox Hasn’t Even Started Catching Up

The whole "MS has no games" talk died last year when they had 3 GOTY quality games. This year was dry for them and Sony hit it out of the park as a publisher, but given the schedule of Xbox games we don't need to compare them on a "X has no games, X is better" due to the fact they're both operating in their own way atm. Also it discredits smaller published games. Gaming media is very bias towards AAA games only. Pentiment is due in a week, grounded got a full release. Not to compare it directly to games like GOW, but if you don't release a massive AAA game it's almost as if it doesn't count. Terrible mentality for the indie space which leads the industry in innovation.
Yep.

SE should be a heavy favorite for publisher of the year but since all their games are AA at best we know they'll be excluded.

Nintendo as well.

People complain about the sterilization of cinema that Marvel has ushered in yet the same stratification has happened in gaming and the masses cheer it on.

If its not single player, action adventure and glossed til it blinds, it doesn't count.

its necessary because we need MS's lack of games to be put on blast. MS needs to realize that not everyone wants to wait till next year... and then the year after that.

they don't need activision, bethesda is enough. What they do need is to fire matt booty and a severe rewrite of management
Phil spencer literally spoke about that. We even had a post about that here.
They know this year has been shit for them.

This isn’t even an issue with cross platform play on almost every title coming out now.

This is just a weak “w” in the console war.

Ultimately for you the consumer, it doesn’t matter which plastic box sells better, it just matters that you’re having fun with the one you chose. Both are great.

Microsoft talks a lot and show very little. They have a very capable machine, in the series x but their application software division just aren’t right. I’m not even excited about Halo anymore.
And I hope this GOW is the last big tentpole for PS4…. Because Sony is coasting too….

MS just needs to stop bringing non achievement lazy copy paste ports like wolfe stein, quake 2 - 4 , etc and pretend like they did some huge service to gamers when they clearly have the resources to do it properly. Rather see them do that then blow millions on some corny that that just ends up sucking in the end and not really generating any more profit than a non aaa game. Seems their priorities are out of wack.

But in all seriousness, nothing will change regardless of their number of studios unless they learn how to manage them appropriately. Will be a shame if they end up acquiring everything only to have the same issues, they will just destroy the industry on their way out.

Destroy the industry is laughable at so many levels.

When their innovation in console space has helped industry to grow at where it is today.

You leave it in Sony/Nintendo's hands, it won't take long to repeat what happened in Japan in rest of the world.

When you don't understand engagement, your players will leave once they have had their fill.

What exactly do you think has happened in Japan specifically?

This reads like Tassi's attempt at getting referenced in Microsoft's documents to the CMA in the same way that Warren did.

If one is guaranteed about MS, is that they will act like suits, when ever they feel like they are in power.

Hope Phil puts the structure, before they try that 2013 e3 shit again.

This article seems fair but kinda late its been a problem for years. Gears deserves more resources it needs a resurgence/revamp I truly believe it can be Microsoft's best franchise and GOTY contender part 5 was a good step but it still needs a huge shake up. Losing Ferguson was a huge blow though.... hopefully Fable can be amazing as well. Microsoft competing with Sony and Nintendo for GOTY's is only good for the industry it's definitely time for them to step it up they are way behind.

That's ok. Nothing wrong with being second or even third of three players. As long as the customers get a good product at a good price that's all that matters.

I dont think Nintendo cares about PS systems often selling more than their Nintendo systems. They got a good hybrid system that rakes in the sales and profits and their user base loves the games buying first party games at like 30M copies or more. Google says Mario Kart 8 has sold about 50M copies.

Do Sony TV buyers care that every chart shows Samsung and LG sell way more TVs than they do? Some charts show Sony TV market share at under 10% now, with TCL only 2% lower. Give it a few more years of trending and TCL will sell more TVs than Sony. But if a Sony TV owner enjoys their TV, why would they care about Samsung and LG who have triple the sales?

... so he should do something about it. One that doesn't involve spending billions on yet another studio.

maybe Xbox should make more smaller titles and fund more indies like they did from 2012-2017. it seemed to serve them a LOT and bolstered their game lineup. all that money gone to activision could be spent funding so many indies

These takes are weird and ironic considering you're doing exactly that to 2021's output from Playstation. They had Returnal and Ratchet & Clank that don't fall under that category yet you guys just dismissed them. Plus the timed exclusives Kena, Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo. None of these games fall under that category you guys talk about.

Also, didn't an indie game won plenty of GOTY awards recently?

In hindsight Phil was right about 2015 being a great year for Xbox. They got

Halo 5: Guardians (console exclusive)
Metal Gear Solid V (no longer a Playstation exclusive after 3 & 4)
Ori & the Blind Forest (console exclusive)
Rise of the Tomb Raider (timed exclusive)
Forza 6 (console exclusive)
Gears of War: Ultimate Edition (console exclusive)
Rare Replay

in addition to multiplats like Arkham Knight (probably ran better than PC version), Fallout 4, Witcher 3, Mortal Kombat X. Compared to now thats like heaven.

It's just never ending. There's always a new excuse too. The expectations have become even higher too with Microsoft literally buying like 30 studios over the last 5 years. They have enormous amount of wealth too! So where the fuck are the games? Microsoft should be drowning us in games, instead they threw a bone every few years. Imagine if they never bought zenimax? They would barely have anything big for next year either without them.

Activision was a surprise purchase, because no one expected them to sell.

and as for the games you are talking, they should have done that during bethesda purchase. Its one thing, I criticise about Xbox alot.
3rd party devs are free, and you can literally pay them for exclusives.

Take your head out of Phil's ass. He's said the same thing for 7 years.
It's not worth bothering, with someone who doesn't understand how long it takes to make games or how many devs it takes to make games come in consistent flow.

Anyway, good luck with your Phil obsession.

The issue with MS is they are afraid of investing with 3rd party devs.

They could have alot of games, like x360 if they just do a partnership with 3rd party devs.

I dont get why they don't do that. Their studio's output isn't enough (before these big purchases).

The PR man has been saying the same thing for 7 years. Games don't take 7 years to make either. It's obvious you're the one who doesn't understand the length of time or simple mathematics.

Just this year? Literally 9 out of the last 10 years has been shit for them. This is a long term ongoing thing. Not just a temporary period. That's the problem!
The issue with those years was their studio numbers.
They had the fewest studios. It wasn't enough to release alot of games.

And the other big problem was their lack of 3rd party partnership like they did during x360.

When you have that much issues, it's guaranteed that you won't get enough games for your system during that gen.

I love Xbox's offerings, big fan of Halo,Gears,Perfect Dark and Forza Horizon series and I absolutely adore the Ori games and really appreciate stuff like Ryse and Quantum Break but Xbox right now is somehow in an even worse position 1st/2nd party game wise than the Xbox one era and i remember how critical people were back then of that.i mainly game Xbox one/360 games in my Xbox so it doesnt affect me much but they really need to get their shit together after so many aquisitions.

The two major delays this year will be the big releases in 2023 along with yet another Forza. We all know it. It’s all too predictable.

I understand the one fact is that, small devs won't give you alot of games.

Sony invested in 3rd party devs, which gave them games like bloodborne and Detroit human. While Phil didn't push those investments. Which is why xbox one suffered during its last years.

That is pretty much on Phil's hands. No one can deny that. He is 100% to blame for that.

Sad to see the state of Xbox. I earnestly wished, and still wish, that Xbox puts out games that get Sony sweating. More competition is always good.

Well said sir. That’s all I want see. And a better UI experience than what we have now. I criticise them a lot because I want them to be better but some ignorant fart wipes can’t see that and get very aggressive about it.

Quality was an issue too. Halo and gears dropped off badly from the 360 era and were no where near as good as they used to be. Look at how sony and Nintendo grew their ip massively in comparison. Their main ips now sell well over 20m when they used to sell less than 10m before.

Represent.

Represent(ative) of bad opinions
This isn’t even console warring.

It’s a fact that their first party output has been a fucking joke since Xbox One days.

If they can admit that, why can’t you?

Sony hasn’t just overlapped them, but the quality and quantity output of their studios is on a completely different level MS can only dream of right now.

It’s time for them to deliver
