[Forbes] PlayStation Is Still A Hit Machine While Xbox Hasn’t Even Started Catching Up

and yet their 2022 games for gamepass have ended up mostly being fodder with a few gems sprinkled in like windjammers 2 and persona 5... the latter of which came out on playstation 6 years ago
We'll just agree to disagree. Plenty of great games on Game pass and if this board has shown anything people here have no idea of what will be successful or not based on comments made about the Switch and XSS.

So if EA or ubisoft own more studios, does it automatically mean more and better games? No, because the management itself sucks. That's the point I'm making. Microsoft are still Microsoft.
But it's not an isolated issue. They did not have many studios to manage in the first place.

I was almost agreeing with you, but you had the switch and XSS in the same sentence.

Same with gamepass as well, it's success is hardly enough to warrant the whole "it's the future" narrative... The switch is a true success, and I couldn't have seen it coming, the other two are only "successes" in r the sense that they're not complete failures! Yay?

It was never about how many first party studios they had. Something just isn't right with the way Microsoft manage their studios and games. Either Microsoft just don't know how to consistently create good high quality games or they just don't care to. Why does it take them years and years to churn out games, that end up being mediocre anyway? In that same time frame, sony and Nintendo create extremely high quality, memorable games.

Agreed. This is why I want MS to chill with growing and to simply focus on building up what they have. But then again, they should have done that years ago. Now they are trying to "buy" to catch up.

Yes it did. And saying it took over 2,000 people to make LoU2 over six years doesn’t mean they were all ND employees.

Most big games have work outsourced for various duties.

The core development team is only a few hundred people

The rest of the “2,000” had specific jobs, they weren’t working full time on it for years

ND released 3 games in 7 years

What is the excuse of 343?

But it's not an isolated issue. They did not have many studios to manage in the first place.

And how did they do with the few that they had before all the acquisitions? How has it changed since? We still have nothing! It's the same message from 2018. The flood of games is always coming "in the future".

XSS is absolutely a success when compared to the ridiculous attacks it received like 'it is holding back the entire generation of gaming' nonsense. People here said it wouldn't sell and it accounts for 50% of Xbox Series sales. The haters were wrong plain and simple. If you define Game pass as 'not a failure' how would you rank it against every other game subscription service? People here declared it 'would destroy the game industry and that it's bleeding MS dry'. The fact that its profitable and the industry is just fine shows how much credence to pay detractors around here. Especially when those detractors make disingenuous attacks. The criticisms against Xbox and MS in general are usually over the top, emotional, and usually 100% wrong.

Games take time to develop and critically acclaimed titles like GoW are now just coming off of lengthy delays as well. Just so you know Xbox has tons of new games on the platform currently and Xbox has never relied solely on first party to carry them through regardless. Sure you can talk about 'the future' but there is lots to play right NOW and I'd wager more is coming. The concern for Xbox and its customers is admirable though. I'm pretty sure the brand will be OK.

Obviously it's still early days, but you could definitely make the argument that right now Microsoft has a stronger looking 2023 that Sony or Nintendo in terms of first party games.

That could all change with a Direct or PS Showcase though.

The problem with MS is that its a "I'll believe it when I see it" type of thing. Sony has earned the public trust they will release good game, MS to a degree, has not.

Requiem, Tunic, Tinykin & Vampire Survivors are great games. Like you say, a few gems.
2023 does look better, with Silk Song, Wo Long and Starfield in the pipeline. Don’t laugh but I think Minecraft Legends looks pretty class as well.

Sony lets studios take risks.

Sony let Insomniac make Resistance instead of just another Ratchet and Clank game (even if they were 2nd party). They then hooked them up with Marvel to make Spider-Man and now Wolverine. Resistance 1 sold at least 2.5 million copies. They could have doubled down on the franchise even as the sequels sold less copies. Maybe in one universe, it would have been wise to have done so.

Guerrilla went from Killzone to Horizon. Another game completely out of their wheelhouse. Sucker Punch went from Infamous to Ghost of Tsushima... entirely out of their wheelhouse. Naughty Dog went from Jak to Uncharted and from Uncharted to The Last of Us... Literally the opposite of what Microsoft did with Bungie. If Microsoft ran Naughty Dog, they might still be focused on just Jak and Daxter games...

Sony could have spent a ton of money getting the rights to Crash and Spyro back for Naughty Dog and Insomniac, but that would have stifled their growth.

Santa Monica has focused entirely on God of War, but they took a risk in entirely rebooting the franchise. Especially risky after their non God of War game was canceled and the failure of Ascension. They're also now finally working on an original IP.

Media Molecule could have kept making LittleBigPlanet games, but instead made Dreams, which I think on PC could be a huge GaaS game.

Microsoft really doesn't take risks at all. They haven't really evolved since they came into the market from a game design perspective. Their studios just create sequel after sequel for what they THINK caters to their audience, and their talent eventually leaves.

Because they don't take risks, their studios don't mature and their games just become stale. Sony's mature studios act as metal sharpening metal. There is none of that with Microsoft. They seem to entirely lack a cohesive culture, which comes from just buying random studios rather than studios with relationships already. Insomniac was VERY close to Sony and Naughty Dog before Sony bought them.

If Sony were to buy FromSoftware, they already have a deep relationship with the company. They've worked with them on Demon's Souls and Bloodborne. Kojima wants to stay independent, but Sony has worked with his studio as well.
I think you are right about Sony letting their studio do their stuff.
Even if most of Sony’s first party studios are all making games around the same formula.
Semi open or open worlds, 3rd person view action games with some cool cut scenes.

I think the semi open 3rd person, single player action formula is the sony dna.

MS seems to look too much at the data.
« If people play this and do this , buy that but not that then we should do this »
It will work, the data said so.

It’s the problem with giant companies, excell sheets, data, trend chasing with a huge inertia.
They are out of touch.

They should give their teams total freedom to create what they really want.
Negociate a budget and a time frame and do it.
Apply a little pressure here and there from time to time to assure they don’t loose their focus.
And some fantastic games would emerge.
A, AA, AAA, it would work for every budget.

MS have made some change, let’s hope for the best.🤞

I am positively sure Gears 6 will be a fucking great game.
The changes they made in gears 5 after a few seasons were amazing and the single player dlc was one of best dlc ever.

Now that some changes are made in 343i higher ups , it could do the same.

Let’s go Microsoft, do it!

2023 is more promising though. Even taking into account that not everything is announced, this is the first time in a long time that MS has more announced for next year than Sony and Nintendo. That wasn't the case for 2022, 2021, 2020 or 2019.
The problem with MS is that its a "I'll believe it when I see it" type of thing. Sony has earned the public trust they will release good game, MS to a degree, has not.
Absolutely, there's no way that we know everything Sony and Nintendo have for 2023. I'm purely speaking about how things look right now.

Nonsense. You’re letting recency bias cloud your logic. Or maybe just bias in general, idk. Xbox gets plenty of “big tent pole” games. Just not 2022.

Whatever. It's hard to take any 'discussion' that lacks context or objectivity. The loudest voices against Xbox don't own one or have any connection to the platform. When they speak about Xbox they show they know little about it. There is nothing to 'defend'. Phil admitted they want more first party games and plenty are in the pipe line. Yelling about how Xbox is doomed is just hyperbolic nonsense. Xbox has been doomed for 20 years.

MS seems to look too much at the data.

I'm curious what the data looked like that had MS greenlight games like Grounded, Sea of Thieves, and Pentiment. You can complain about MS and their decisions but there is no evidence that MS is keeping their studios from being free creatively. MS is really the main company being willing to invest in games big and small. They are taking lots of chances with certain games again evidenced by Age of Empires hitting console. Game pass at least reduces the financial risk to gamers and that I appreciate.

I don't know how it got this bad for Microsoft...

If they didn't buy those studios they would have been slaughtered badly this gen

There are some serious management issues going on at Microsoft, and 343 incompetence proves it.
What does Playground Games continued success prove? Or Coalition or Mojang?

Wasteland 3 wasn't first party I don't think. Xbox's biggest first party game in 2020 was either Bleeding Edge or Ori and the Will of the Wisps
MS owns inXile the developer of Wasteland 3.

More on the topic God of War being a good game has absolutely no bearing on Xbox at all. Again even Phil said he was looking forward to playing it. So am I. Many gamers are. The thing that shocks me are people who don't like a brand or console have so much time to talk about what they don't like. I am not a huge fan of Nintendo games anymore. I spend zero time talking about how much I don't like it. There are much better uses of my time. Concern Concern continues to be right. "I don't love my favorite console. I just hate yours."

Of course it’s first party, MS owns the developer. And inXile has been on record talking about how the MS acquisition allowed them to take more time with the game and add more content and also voice over for the entire game.

It’s a turn based strategy game so it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but the game is goddamn amazing.

Fire Matt Booty. The buck has to stop with him.
MS had 15 studios before buying Bethesda. FIFTEEN.

It is unacceptable that Compulsion games , which was acquired the same year that GOW 2018 released, still has to show a trailer for anything while GOW 2022 is coming out.

The situation at the Initiative is completely ridiculous! Only a CGI trailer after 4.5 years. This is incompetence at the cost of the shareholders.
What is the latest about Everwild? How many years will it take for just the developer to know what game it wants to make?

Why is Obsidian bringing a completely useless filler thing called Pentiment? Who greenlit this? It’s like they would rather be seen announcing games than releasing them. Why are they not putting their focus on ONE game that they actually release? We have no news about Avowed that they announced almost 3 years ago and they showed a cgi trailer for another game that we might not even see this generation (TOTW2).

Don’t get me started about 343. They’re announcing raytracing in 2023 for a game that was supposed to release in 2020. They’re a complete disgrace.

I’ll take it easy on Ninja Theory because they have showcased the kind of gameplay sequence that shows that the product is in good hands. You don’t mind waiting as long as it takes for those.

What are the release dates for state of decay 3? Fable? Perfect Dark? None of those might come in 2023. Insomniac will be releasing their 3rd and 4th AAA titles of this generation by the time those games come out.

Xbox game studios is a mess man. I won’t speak about Bethesda because they produce massive games that take a generation to make and they were only recently purchased. The fact that the fate of this generation relies on ONE Bethesda game is really embarrassing for Xbox and the time has come to say it. They’re still far from competing with their rivals when it comes to first party and they’ve really done less with more in terms of resource management.
Comparing Compulsion games to SMS is such a dumb comparison.

And theres nothing wrong with Obsidian making games like Pentiment. Especially if the game is good. It shows versatility in a studio. They don't need to focus on one game. Most AAA studios don't just focus on one game.

Agree with the rest though

The lack of creative freedom doesn't seem to be the issue, everything the devs have said so far shows it's quite the opposite.

Microsoft studios just seem isolated, when you read what Corden said about Avowed dev, that they wanted to do a AAA because they were now a part of Microsoft, but that they had to scale back because it was too hard for them and they weren't big enough yet, it really seems like a close circuit. Like they didn't have any lever they could pull to make that happen.

Sony studios are not what they are because Sony "let them" take risk. They built an entire network at the disposal of those studios so they could make huge games, it's just about the environment, the support studios and the talented producers that are, for the most part, not just letting free spirits wander into the world of ideas for a whole year.

Anyone pushing the narrative that after all the promises made by Phil Spencer, Pentiment is the answer, is trolling you.
I agree. While there’s nothing wrong with quality indie games, they aren’t the reason the drop $500 on a console.

All that power… MS must produce something to take full advantage of it. Preferably something new and original.

Obsidian have been around almost 20 years, have worked on a litany of games many of which highly regarded and well received. I don't think using Avowed as an example is really indicative of anything at MS tbh.

Yes that’s how it works. Sony gets full credit for Destiny 1 and Destiny 2 + All the DLC too.

I think it was Shawn Layden that was there at the time? He basically birth a new genre from the ground up. Unbelievable creativity Sony did with that IP.

You agree, yes?
Most of all, Sony's work on Sunset Overdrive (a first-party Sony-owned IP) was among the best, and PS deserves all the credit for it.

Completely different situations.

Naughty Dog is working on a template.

Everwild is expected to be brand new, something that will be played by millions over many years. This will take time.

"Wasteland 3 dev touts 'quality increase by leaps and bounds' post-Microsoft acquisition"

Same thing happened with Psychonauts 2.

None of that, make it exclusive to our console, then only we will invest in it. All systems benefited from this.

Even that is a cheap mobile looking game, fun/addictive I'm sure. At least with that game those people have played it even if I wouldn't call it GOTY material either. Again I respect their opinion but I can't take them seriously for suggesting it's "the best looking game this year".

343 had MCC 2014, Halo 5 2015, and Infinite 2021. What are you even arguing here? What a bunch of nonsense. Who cares. The moral of the story is games take a lot of time.
343 also co-developed Halo Wars 2 and bunch of smaller mobile Halo games at that time. MCC was also basically made twice during that time because of how bad initial release was.

Age of Empires III came out in 2005 though.

Quite frankly I don’t care if they cultivate the studios or not. I don’t care that Sony haven’t cultivated Bungie, Nixxes or Haven.

Astro is a sequel and Sackboy is a derivative sequel. It has to go both ways. Returnal and GoT are new, but so are Grounded, Sea of Thieves and Ori.

100% agree, they need to show they can actually produce a culture of excellency like Nintendo and Sony do. Personally I don’t think they can and will instead have to rely on individual brilliance from the likes of Obsidian, Playground and Bethesda. It’s going to be hodgepodge IMO.

Sony hasn't cultivated studios that they just bought within the last 2 years? LOL... you're a huge fanboy... Astroboy wasn't at all the game it is now. It was a VR game that no one played. Ori? Is that Microsoft?

I never claimed that buying a studio means good management. You claimed MS didn't invest in studios and mentioned Epic and Bungie like that all MS has done with regard to game development. It doesn't appear you even know what studios MS even has.

Sony on the other hand was fortunate to never really have any serious competition in gaming. Sega is self evident. Nintendo continued to use game media that was against what developers wanted so it was completely passed over for 3rd party titles. This is still true today.

Sony was able to leverage their other business ventures to push media formats that helped them move consoles and build 3rd party and internal studios to what we have today. MS really had none of those advantages but sure their leadership from the company didn't rely on Xbox to support MS overall so it wasn't a priority. That has nothing to do with today.

You should ask Sony why they changed how their subscribers are counted. I'd wager they didn't like how despite selling more consoles and having more customers MS had the superior game subscription service with much better numbers compared to PS Now. This is still true regardless of accounting.

With regard to profits why would you care about that over the quality of the service? I guess in that vein Game pass is profitable and great service so there is no excuse to not have both. You want to call me an Xbox fanboy but you'll never see me worring about how much money MS is making. I care about value and seeing them spend money to make their customers happy. I don't see that happening on other platforms when prices are increasing and there are fees for things that should be free. It's so weird to see gamers more concerned about a company's financials than their own.

I disagree. Nintendo has been in gaming for generations and Xbox was a brand new console. I understand that if a person isn't even aware of what Xbox has done in gaming you could think that though. Goal posts shift all the time when trying to discredit things MS has done in gaming.

This is false. Again the Series consoles have been outpacing previous Xbox generations. I'm not going to bother making a list of successful games over the generations but perhaps you can look it up while learning MS had more game development involvements than Bungie and Epic.

MS focus on 3rd party is part due to lack of studios in the past and part of the current focus when they are trying to support their superior game service. MS is not nearly as interested in taking games away from other platforms so you'll see them focusing on getting interesting games on the service over exclusive 3rd party stuff. Their current lineup is more diverse than what I see elsewhere.

The future is changing with new exclusives in development and we'll see how well they do. Thankfully gaming is not a zero sum game so all three gaming platforms can be successful. I'm just glad to have alternatives to the current market leader so I can save some money and have plenty of games to play to boot.

It's appreciated that so many people who don't even own an Xbox are concerned about its future. People have been predicting its demise since they first entered the market 20 years. Xbox is still here and will be just fine in the future.
Some of us have been here since the start... Saying Nintendo and Sega weren't serious competition... Microsoft has never produced console sales as high as the Wii and Gamecube sold about as well as Xbox at the time. Nintendo just couldn't keep up with the costs.

Just fine, 20 years later without any new major franchises... They've had a lack of studios for 20 years? And you don't think that's spinning their wheels? Sony has purchased small studios and built out studios in this time frame... literally in the last 5 years alone.

More importantly have you played that game?

Simple addictive fun harkens back to the arcade days.

A lot of people don't understand what fun is in video games these days.

Too obsessed with depression simulators.

Even that is a cheap mobile looking game, fun/addictive I'm sure. At least with that game those people have played it even if I wouldn't call it GOTY material either. Again I respect their opinion but I can't take them seriously for suggesting it's "the best looking game this year".

Best looking might mean most anticipated for them.

And I wouldn't question them. If you know Obsidian's history and how they always wanted to make games like these.
