Pentiment - Reviews Thread

Apparently it has no (musical) soundtrack? Not sure how I feel about that. That's usually a big part of a game and its atmosphere for me, even if a relatively light soundtrack. Will still be checking it out on Game Pass regardless.

One of the recent making of videos talked about hiring a group for the music that did medieval music. At the very least, I'd expect contextualized music like singing if you go in a church, etc.

Best font of the year. Calling it now.

"That aforementioned dialogue in Pentiment is oozing with personality, and immediately drew me in; Obsidian Entertainment managed to make Pentiment's text-heavy narration a strength rather than a weakness. Every character in Pentiment has a unique font that mirrors Andreas' personal perspective of that character; Scribes and monks write with a flowery script, peasants scrawl with a messy hand, printers press their type into the page rather than write, and more. What's more, that font can change mid-conversation if Andreas learns something that shifts his perspective. For example, Andreas may realize that who he believed was an illiterate peasant is actually educated. Suddenly, that character's casual font becomes more formal and complex."

"This all works because the dialogue in Pentiment is written onto the page in real-time, complete with typos that are hurriedly fixed by the writer with the sound of a knife or rock scraping the ink from the paper. The ink blooms and dries over a brief period of time as it sets, and it doesn't always do so in a consistent fashion. Finally, important words that are written in a distinct colored ink (such as holy words, written in red) are placed on the page after the rest, in line with the process of actual scribes from the era. It may seem deceptively simple on the surface, but this approach to written dialogue comes with an attention to detail not seen in many other games"
That's pretty cool!

Why so triggered? Was i lying in that post? I'm just an angry former Xbox and Gamepass customer lashing out cause i wasted $500 on the system and took a loss when i had to sell it at a loss to get a PS5 (I sold it at $250 cause nobody wanted to buy it for more). You guys keep thinking i'm fanboying but i'm just a disgruntled former customer of Xbox.
why do you blame xbox for you being an idiot?

BigbyTheSheriff BigbyTheSheriff you must be happy today.
Gz on the gem. And good luck having fun playing it.

HOW?!?!

Like how the fuck did this get a 90, let alone an 85??! This is somehow someway actually rated higher than Sonic Frontiers.
I didn't even expect anything higher than a 70. WTF are the reviewers smoking?!?! Even when i was blindly defending xbox i didn't expect much from this game, and then it does this.

I came in expecting low, 67 reviews, got 85.

Don't worry, you would have been too dumb to be able to enjoy this game anyhow.

I have never been into games like this but I will give it a try at some point. It looks like one of those adventure book type of games (Monkey Island, I think).

Sounds like everything I hoped it would be. Great writing, tons of player agency, incredible attention to historical detail.

Seems like it is pretty slow paced though, but that's intentional given the slow pace of life back then and the fact the story takes place over decades.

Can't decide if I'm playing this or Somerville first.
Slow paced? Sure.

But I still played it for over 12 hours straight the other day. The story is that good.

Scratch that, not just the story. Just the whole place of Tassing sucked me in. I loved that place, the people, everything that happened.

Josh Sawyer is a literary genius.

Whatever he wants to do, let him do it.

The writing in this game is so unbelievably good. I'm thinking about it days after finishing it. I just want to play it again to see what might have happened had I handled that one conversation differently.

One of the best games I've ever played. The best thing Obsidian has ever done.

And I even feel like I didn't just learn something, I learned a lot. This game should be played in schools.

Why when i can instead buy a PS5 and play Returnal, Elden Ring, God of War, Horizon and even more exclusives on the way like Final fantasy 16, Final Fantasy - Rebirth, Forspoken, Spiderman, and Wolverine. And those were the games announced so far.

Still having an Xbox over the PS5 is not a good choice and games like this make me feel pity for Xbox owners who have no choice but to keep the system due to circumstances.

I don't plan on arguing about this low caliber game on a $500 system.
Good for you. Now go lick your PS5s insides and enjoy that instead of bothering thode of us who are interested in something else.

Peace be with you child.

Damn.

Yeah, I adored Disco Elysium and that’s why this looks so good and interesting to me.

sonic frontiers is an actual video game with combat, exploration, 3D graphics and gameplay
this is literally a point and click adventure game with flash graphics released on gamepass. it's rated higher somehow. MS/Obsidian has to be doing some serious moneyhatting here
There’s no “actual videogames”. Everyone was playing point and click adventures in the 90s and no one thought they were lesser games. You could still jump on turtles in Mario 64.

Open up your mind. Disco Elysium was arguably the game of the last decade with some similar concepts.

Yes like the estonian indie studio of Disco Elysium bribed the media back in the days.

No really the point is that one is shit and the other is not, whatever the format.

The landscape of Tassing changes drastically over the course of the game as the town expands, as the role of the local abbey changes in the context of the reformation. Watching characters who were toddlers in the first act grow into adults in the third is a beautiful struggle, and in some cases your past interactions with them can have surprising and lingering effects on their personality.

I love that.

You know games dont get rated on the quality of their graphics (well actually sometimes they do). Games are rated on the merit of said game.
Reviewers are liking the game for what it is, hence the reviews. Going by your logic barely any Indie games, and some AA games, should never get good scores because they dont have amazing graphics.

its not just graphics Sonic Frontiers gameplay is actually existent. Whether or not it's good it certainly has more engagement than this. There's more to do in that game than in Pentiment. By all accounts Pentiment should have a way lower score, it's a niche genre and it shouldn't really sit well with reviewers. Yet it does shit like this. You can't convince me this isn't moneyhatting

That's the funny thing about these complaints though. The game actually does have great graphics. It mimics the historical art it's inspired by very well, and the characters are so easily identifiable that through generations you can recognize not just the same people years later, but you can kinda sorta tell who's related.

But you're just saying the same thing. You're basically saying any Indie game should never get great scores because they dont have the graphics of AAA games. I mean do you realize how stupid, and shallow, that is?.
Also i have little interest in this game, but i'd still rather play this than fucking Sonic Frontiers.

Pentiment comes from a text adventure tradition rooted heavily in the history of videogames. What are you talking about. Money hats? Christ almighty.

First to say; another ms gamepass fodder /s
I really hope the mindset that because a game isn’t AAA means it’s fodder. It’s very unhealthy for the industry. But I realized it’s more so a fanboy defense. Games like this and vampire survivor will do well and it makes fanboys mad that games different than the one their favorite publisher does is doing well too. I’d be content with two AAA games a year and smaller games like this interspersed throughout the year.
