Pentiment - Reviews Thread

You're basically saying any Indie game should never get great scores because they dont have the graphics of AAA games.
i am the biggest rep for indie games on this entire fucking forum but there's a difference between something like celeste or a hat in time which has actual gameplay and Pentiment which is literally a niche video game made for a small audience. Pentiment by all accounts should not be getting an 85

Return to monkey island is a point and click game and has 87 aggregate, do you also feel the same about that ?

What the hell does a game having a small audience have to do with review scores? By your logic Madden and Call of Duty should be getting top scores because they have large audiences. Seriously, stop. This is embarrassing to read.

So what are reviewers supposed to do then in a case like this?, mark the game down?, give the game a lower score than they think it deserves because it doesnt have the graphics and gameplay mechanics of some other games?.

Come on now man. Look at Disco Elysium, most peoiple love it and its literally 80% reading and listening to conversations.

Why when i can instead buy a PS5 and play Returnal, Elden Ring, God of War, Horizon and even more exclusives on the way like Final fantasy 16, Final Fantasy - Rebirth, Forspoken, Spiderman, and Wolverine. And those were the games announced so far.

Still having an Xbox over the PS5 is not a good choice and games like this make me feel pity for Xbox owners who have no choice but to keep the system due to circumstances.

I don't plan on arguing about this low caliber game on a $500 system.

Good. Go do all that. This thread is not for you.

Honestly, huge fucking kudos to Microsoft for continuining to publish and/or support the development of unique, niche games such as this.

Games that might not have the largest sales appeal but review very highly. Games like Flight Simulator, Psychonauts 2 (I know this was in development before Microsoft acquired them but Microsoft's funding allowed them to significantly increase their scope), Age of Empires IV, As Dusk Falls, and now Pentiment.

I really hope this trend continues, as these passion project type games are important to the industry.
Great post! I know lots of these games don't have the same appeal as big AAA exclusives, but those are coming as well (Phil has been saying that for almost a decade 😜). The Xbox library will be incredibly varied if MS keeps going like this, I love it!

If you want to play the same old shit you've played on PS4, PS5 is for you. If you want variety, Xbox is a good choice.

Best choice is, as always, PC.

Each game should be rated by how well it executes its own goals. There is so much more than just traditional gameplay or graphics. If some guy in Moldavia makes a black and white game about a pixelated ass farting on everything and somehow makes it addictive, timely, original or memorable, he deserves a 90 metascore, goddamit.

And you seem to have already set your mind on the fact that Pentiment doesn't have any real gameplay in it, yet by reading the reviews it seems we have been given so many options on how to progress in the game, unfold the story and so on.

Play it maybe?

Obsidian has chops to do good writing, even if you judge it from high standards.

If the progression is based on your interactions in a virtual world i don't see why you're denying it's played.

I get it's not the most complex kind of experience in programming or game design. But when we stumble on the world of interactive art you cannot have a conception that's as rigid. However i can definitely understand you don't find this kind of games interesting based on what you seek in video games.

IGN give this game a 10? I don’t trust these reviews at all. Getting Deathloop vibes and I enjoyed Deathloop but it wasn’t a 10.

Going to play and see for myself

GameSpot hit this with a 6/10

The review is a wall of text so I only skimmed through it. One section in particular jumped out at me though.

In theory, this system seems designed to push you to commit to one suspect, maybe two, and put any and all time you have into figuring out their motive. But many lines of investigation in Pentiment lead to clear realizations that the person you thought might be the killer is, in all likelihood, innocent, and all the time you spent considering them a suspect was for nothing. So if you commit to probing the wrong person, you're left with no time to scrutinize someone else upon realizing your mistake. But if you spread your investigation too thin, you might not have enough time to finish looking into anyone in depth. A system like this helps differentiate one playthrough from another, giving repeat playthroughs some variety, but it can make your first time through the game feel like you're being needlessly taxed for wanting to conduct a detailed examination of every available suspect. I'm also not a fan of the fact that grabbing dinner with someone can eat into your limited time as well, punishing you for wanting to learn more about the town and the characters unrelated to the case at hand.

Seems like there is a lot of replay value here which is great imo.

Honestly feels like they're giving those votes to feel smarter than they actually are.

In any case, I will eventually get the game when I find the time because I'm very curious about it, and I'm open to change my mind about it.

I share your skepticism. Can’t say I’m not intrigued though.

Eager to read impressions on RPG Codex. Got my popcorn ready.

K Kimahri in this thread played it and beat it, and not only said they loved it, but specifically said that they learned a lot.

Part of game design and story design is crafting the game in a way that makes people feel smart when they discover things the devs laid out for them in advance. It's a trick that a lot of puzzle or mystery games pull off, and that just means it's working as intended.
