Jim Ryan: "[Microsoft is] a tech giant with a long history of dominating industries, the choices gamers have today will disappear"

According to Sony Interactive Entertainment boss Jim Ryan, Microsoft has a history of dominating industries and if they officially acquire ActivisionBlizzard , gamers across the world may no longer have the choices they have now.

"[Microsoft is] a tech giant with a long history of dominating industries," Ryan told the NYTimes. "It is highly likely that the choices gamers have today will disappear if this deal goes ahead."

Ryan did not say what these choices are but he was pretty adamant that gamers will be those who will feel the negatives of this acquisition.

As expected, Sony have been trying their best to block the deal ever since the regulators started their investigations. The biggest talking point is obviously the Call of Duty franchise, which Microsoft promised to keep on PlayStation as long as the console exists.

The NYTimes report states that Microsoft recently offered Sony a deal to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation for the next ten years but Sony reportedly declined to comment on the offer.

Jim Ryan previously stated that Microsoft's Call of Duty offer was "inadequate on so many levels".

Jim Ryan issues a statement today in response to a NYT query.

This time it seems Jim went a bit more aggressive, but also kept it short. Still within that short response he alluded to Microsofts previous history in the past of dominating industries through monopolistic practices, and that the choices games have today will disappear if Microsoft accomplishes their goal.

While it has been some times since Microsoft was in a position to monopolize anything, I would say Jim had a point if Sony did not engage in similar policies in the consoles space from 1994-?

With that said, it's still a question on whether gamers lose choice.

One one hand, if Sony is excluded by MS puts games and makes them easier to access across smartphones, PC, Tablets, Xbox, and TVs, thagt would technically me more choice.

But on the other hand, it does exclude Sony's userbase, which means that they will not be able to participate, and that can be seen as sacrificing one for all, instead of all for one and one for all.

But jims call out to Microsofts history in the past shows that he's getting a bit unhinged now. Even after he reportedly accepted a signed 10 year deal from Phil Spencer (rumored). This means that Jim is very concerned and possibly angry about this issue to a personal level, and probably the numerous calls for contact by the press about it didn't help either.

But then again we have to ask ourselves the question, is buying exclusive away from platforms choice? Because Sony engages with in that with the PS5 and PS4 recently for years and years from Final Fantasy, to several other games that missed Xbox One and now X. Is that much different that Microsoft? Where do we draw the line? If it's allowed than there really shouldn't be such controversy over it. If the issue is how much PS consoles sales are connected, Jim can end this whole thing right now by showing documentation revealing how much PS sales will be impacted. Otherwise this seems overblown.

Fuck this hypocrite and all his fanboys.

They can't be bullying everyone with shit exclusive deals and then cry when someone does it to them.

Sign the contract for a long period of CoD availability on playstation and let Microsoft offer it in Gamepass for their users.

Sony leaves you with no choice even without M&A thanks to the scummy third party deals they been pulling since 1994. Last I checked I can't play Bloodborne on PC, the platform where Souls games are the most popular and made them what they are today. Not even a competing console ffs...

What's the matter? Are you that scared mate? Spencer said time and time again COD will be available on PS. Just like Minecraft is. We have a saying in Spanish for people like Jim Ryan "El ladron cree que todos son de su condicion"

Not a great look for him here, he wasn't able to go into any type of specifics. Probably should just stay quiet and let Sony fanboys fight this battle. Right now it's easy to keep Microsoft as the bad guy. The more Jim talks the harder that becomes.

Lets be real though, CoD, Diablo, Starfield, Elder Scrolls, Etc "Free" day 1 on Gamepass does have a very solid chance of killing Playstation in the mid to long term. The critical mass of normies do not care that much about the single prestige first party game Sony releases every year or two, they'll buy the Black Friday $200 Series S and play all the big games for $10.

All I’m reading is “please don’t let MS use our own tactics against us”.

At least with MS everything is still on PC. Out of the big three it’s the option that gives gamers the most choice.
This is what its all about

They are not as worried about losing COD totally nearly as forever seeing the Xbox logo on every poster and every commercial for the rest of CODs life

I just want all of this to be over with and tbh I don't really care how it turns out. The ideal would be CoD remains on all platforms it's already on and whichever ones it would have been in the future, and on Xbox and PC, it launched day and gate on Game Pass.

I think at the end of the day, Sony is worried that as CoD becomes associated with the Microsoft brand, and Game Pass becomes more appealing, Sony will begin to lose sales in lieu of gamers that find what MS offers to be more appealing. I know we all laugh and joke about the lack of exclusive content from MS but I think we all know that isn't going to be an issue moving forward given how many studios they have. These deals thus far haven't paid much dividends right now but the mid and tail end of this console generation, and the next, looks like MS is going to be really big.

Big bad evil Sony are so terrible for the industry that they even ended up making and funding amazing games that I want to play 😭

Sony strong-armed Sega right out of the industry, and tried to do it to Nintendo. I don't want to hear Jimbo's whining.
Nah, Sega didn't need any help in dynamiting their own business, they did a pretty good job at it all by themselves.

Regarding Jim's statements, well, he's kinda right. None of the current major players in the industry, save for the trillion dollar Microsoft Corporation, are remotely capable of even thinking about making a move on this scale, which undeniable turns the ABK acquisition into an anti-competitive endeavor only made possible by the deep pockets MS has earned in other industries, not gaming. A bully, rich-boy, power move like this by an organization with well over 20 first-party studios shouldn't be allowed to go through. Build your way out to the top, just like the two other console manufacturers, don't buy it.

Jim Ryan and his do as as say not as I do lol. Try and content starve the competition is cool if he does it. When he is offered a 10 year deal to keep the game with parity its time to cry its not enough because he doesn't get 100% his way. Playstation won't lose any games for a long time from this deal. He just doesn't like gamepass getting COD and other games offering fair competition.

Actually no, it's Microsoft who has left themselves with no choice with their inability to develop first party games that sell consoles, which in turn provides the opportunity to have such deals with 3rd party developers. The reason Microsoft can't lock in similar deals is because they don't have the console base that make those deals economically friendly for them and appealing for external developers. Remember, CoD was an Xbox game before all else. What changed? Quality of first party output. That will always be the name of the game in console industry and Microsoft knows that.

Jim Ryan is losing his shit over the idea of losing Call of Duty, and it's pretty pathetic ngl. Perhaps they should have a back-up plan if CoD is that important to him.
I think he knows this deal is going through and he is just making as much noise as he can to get the best deal he can from MS

Hell he got the contract offer up to 10 years already

Sony spends close to a decade devaluing Xbox with paid exclusives and then cries when Microsoft makes moves to be more competitive. Can’t make this stuff up.

The saddest thing is he’s only concerned about taking a hit on the MTX money they bring in through COD. 😂
