Sony Interactive Entertainment will publish Ultizero Games-developed action RPG and PlayStation China Hero Project title Lost Soul Aside, the companies announced. It will be available for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

Here is an overview of the game, via Sony Interactive Entertainment:

The first trailer of Lost Soul Aside was released in 2016 and has attracted the attention of global players and the game industry. Initially developed by independent producer Yang Bing alone, the game was invited by Sony Interactive Entertainment to join the “China Hero Project” in October of the same year. With the full support of Sony Interactive Entertainment and its game industry partners, Yang Bing established Ultizero Games in January 2017 and now has a mature development team of over 40 people.

Set in a fantasy world where science-fiction, swords, and superpowers coexist, Lost Soul Aside is an action RPG that tells the story of Kazer, following his accidental merger with the symbiont Arena. With combat at its heart, Lost Soul Aside has a rich and rewarding combat system that gives player the flexibility to adapt their playstyle, and weapon choice to suit their playstyle to the battle at hand.

Since its first reveal, Lost Soul Aside has been very well received, including collecting the Most Anticipated Game award and Dev Grant from Epic Games, as well as strong local praise in China, reinforcing its position as one of the most anticipated titles to come from a China based developer.

This game desperately needs a release timeframe or something. Seems like we hear about this game like once a year an in the between time everyone forgets it exists.

Ok it looks good but how many of these Chinese games have actually released and were decent? It feels like every so often we get another trailer of an awesome Chinese game in development and then basically nothing until the next trailer arrives to wow us.

Man that's a blast from the past. Looking good. I'm sure it's probably just for the trailer, but they only showed 1v1 fights. The only non-boss looking enemy was the red guy he air juggled. Hope it hasn't turned into a boss rush game, and that there are proper stages. They showed a bit of traversal too, which is a good sign.

Anyways, it looks better than ever.

It does look like a pretty neat game, I get FFVII/Crisis Core x DMC vibes from the footage. I'm still more interested in what way this game will stand apart aside from just being compared to those IP, or to other games like Stellar Blade (which has a more individualized identity as a game to me, despite clear inspiration from Metroid Samus & Bayonetta), but I figure that stuff will come to light with future footage.

Also given this is part of China Hero Project, I'd expect it to launch on PS5 & PC Day 1, at least in China. They could do so for other parts of the world, but they could just as easily stagger out the PC version for specific markets until a little whiles after bringing it to PS5. After all, there may be a specific team optimizing the Chinese PC version but Sony may just want to focus on optimizing the PS5 version for global markets and handle PC optimization at a later date.

Looks really good. I was wondering, in one of the previous gameplay vids there's a large list of moves. Seems to be new ones in here too. Hoping it's not too convoluted.

F.I.S.T was really good. A few mor have come out as well but they aren’t as big budget and flashy.

I have more faith in these games, along with Rise of Ronin and Stellar Blade now that sony is providing funding and development to them

This game always looked cool. I'm excited.

Lost Souls Aside and Stellar Blade both releasing in 2023, published by Sony. Combined this with Forspoken, Final Fantasy XVI, Spider-Man 2, Horizon CotM, and Firewall 2, 2023 is already looking another stellar year for PlayStation.

And that, too, without a PlayStation Showcase.

We may also get Helldivers 2 and Horizon's multiplayer game + DLC and mayyyybeee TLOU 2 Online.

Excuse my hype. Back to Lost Souls Aside! 🔥

This isn't asian enough, I demand the asianosity to be turned to 99! (Oppai... uh I mean *checks google translate* Xiōngbù!)

Looks pretty inventive, silly and cool, I hope it comes out.

Its like asian developers have direct access to the brains of 12-year old boys via some sort of neuron-reading time machine:

Jeff: "We need more ideas for this boss *shouts into other room* what does the machine say Tony?!??"
Tony: *sprinting up the hallway and into the room huffing and puffing* "I've got the latest scans here, it says: A cross between the robot character from rise of the robots and the T1000, but with shades of Poseidon from God of War 3"
Jeff: "What about the traversal mechanic and platforming section ideas I asked for?"
Tony: "It says: surfing on glowing cubes and bouncing on giant roses"
*Jeff turns back to look at a hologram of a cyber-cerberus he's just added another laser nodule to*
Jeff: "Good... and what of the companion character?"
Tony: "All I have is: Anti-Gravity Dragon-Homunculus" *shrugs*

Tony: "Theres an addendum too, it says: Everyone has the hair of a British septuagenarian lesbian... with surplus ponytails"
Jeff: *looks pensive, but remains silent and turns back to his holo-terminal*

You are right to question when first-time developers announce high-profile projects outside of the typical publishing system. This is particularly the case for most Chinese games, as these games are spilling out from an expansion of the workers who had been doing CG and tech contracting now going indie. Many of these people are tremendously skilled at designing high-quality work in popular engines from doing so much work in the background, so their definition of "indie" is on the far high-end as they tend to make astounding trailers and announcement showings with their professional asset and FMV design skills, but producing a full game is its own mountain to climb...

...But how many of these games have actually released and were decent, from Sony's China Hero Project specifically? Quite a few, actually.

Most were not published by Sony specifically (in fact, I think these are the first to get global distribution from Sony itself?) and some aren't even on PlayStation consoles despite the Sony backing, but there are success stories from the program. F.I.S.T: Forged in Shadow Torch was made in CHP, as was Hardcore Mecha, Anno:Mutationem, and In Nightmare, and probably all of these are worth taking a look at. Also VR games The Walker, Stifled, and Immortal Legacy (formerly Kill X) came out. And Project Boundary was supposed to be out this year, but it got pushed back again. Since the project launched in 2017, 14 games have been backed across Phase I&II (Phase III will have more), at least half of those are out on the market, and some are actually pretty good.

Oh dang. In my hype, I misread it then. Thanks for the correction!
2024 looks crazy, I'm hyped for it like 2023. I'm assuming DS2 and TLOU Factions II are 2024

Lost Soul Aside
Wolverine
Rise of the Ronin
FF7 Rebirth
TLOU Factions II
Death Stranding 2

Plus some other PlayStation studios should be ready to release a new game too

Even if the games end up not being hits its good that Sony is increasingly supporting new developers and expanding the market. This is healthy for the industry, Rise of Ronin, Stellar Blade, China Hero Project, are all getting funding and help with development from Sony to get these games out. When people bemoan the idea of Japan Studio dying, this is what the non-Asobi half is doing now, they are working on partnered games.

This is the biggest, most important thing for me.

Sony is helping new developers break into the scene. We're getting new games that we wouldn't get otherwise. That's how the gaming industry can expand, and PS gamers (and even other platforms, including Xbox) will get more games.

Never thought until 2024, but you're right. We can also safely add Firewalk's game in either 2023 or 2024. Damn! 🔥

I mean, I'm heartbroken about Sony Japan Studio closing. (And I wish ForwardWorks had worked out and these people could have transferred there, as Japan Studio flourished with PSP and Vita while their home console work was always a struggle sales-wise if not quality-wise.) However, if you look at what Japan Studio was producing, what it was not producing (including its canceled projects,) and what the Japanese game market is interested in currently, Japan Studio was out at sea without a paddle. It's possible that the talented directors formerly of Japan Studio will ultimately have better success on their own in the independent market (and already a few of these creators have formed their own studio) than they would have all been as small pieces of the huge team trying to drag Rayspace into existence or swing for strike 3 with another Knack. (Also, Japan Studio's favored co-developers like Shift and Dimps and Pyramid and Q Entertainment have already moved on to other publishers or closed up, so if you loved a Japan Studios game, check some of those companies out.)

It's the end of an era, but it's the end of an era that had already been ending for a long, long time, and it's potentially the beginning of a new era...

Heh, "fixed" that for you, not really, but kind of.

Because interestingly, couple of these PlayStation CHP games have actually released on Switch after their runs on PS and PC, which I guess Sony didn't carve out a clause for or they just negotiated a short time of exclusivity and just these games didn't get Xbox ports or whatever is the case. (I'm not sure even "PlayStation exclusivity" is a requirement for CHP, as some of the Phase II games I believe have announced PC versions but not yet PS console releases?)

But overall, you are correct, China becoming a force in game development will bring new games to all platforms including Xbox. In fact, Xbox was supposedly so frustrated with itself over letting Genshin Impact go that they have been courting Chinese developers themselves. (They bet bigger instead on South Korean studios/brands like Crossfire and KartRider.) Nothing significant has come from the China searching for Xbox, and despite the success of Switch in China I can't think of any significant developments from Nintendo for Chinese games, but in due time I bet this conversation will change.

Still hoping Factions is next year, at least a beta.

But yeah, think about all the games we don’t know about, they said they had 25+ games in production last year, all we know about officially are like 5, not counting anything they’ve signed on for or greenlit this year, with the Bungie games

BTW, it's been a while with Lost Soul Aside, so if you need to catch up, here are some of the previous trailers and play demos of the game:

It feels great knowing that we're covered with games for the next few years and whether some of these games are 2023 or 2024, both years should be amazing 😍

Oh yeah. I see what you mean 😉

Both games look neat but TBF we know more about Stellar Blade than Lost Soul Aside. Which makes sense because Stellar Blade should be coming sooner (2023); LSA is probably a 2024 game.

How do I play this on Xbox

1: Buy a PS5

2: Done!

or ...

1: Buy a PC

2: Set up a streaming app on your PC compatible with Xbox

3: Stream it to your Xbox with inferior Wifi 5 since Microsoft skimped on Wifi 6 support

4: Done!

There is no real source, the fact that it's also releasing on PS4 makes me believe it'll come out in 2023.

It could, but since Sony's publishing both this and Stellar Blade, and there's some degree of similarity with them, they would want to space them out well enough so that they can both breathe. Forspoken is another vaguely similar style of game, and that's coming in January.

So Forspoken in January, Lost Soul Aside in the Summer (maybe a month or two ahead of FF XVI), Stellar Blade in Fall could work if it's coming 2023. But I think LSA's a 2024 game TBH.

An aside, but Spiderman 2 and Stellar Blade hitting next Fall would be absolutely epic.

Lost Souls Aside has been in development for so long it went from looking like some sort of next gen DMC to looked dated.
Still looks fun though, hopefully it finally comes out before too long.
