Is the Jet Set Radio port on pc any good?

I’m always a bit dubious about the steam reviews. Japanese games on pc are generally so bad but because gamers are starved they will generally set some pretty low fucking standards (eg keyboard support blows “well it was designed for controller”, graphics options are non existent “well it’s to preserve the creators original vision”, frames capped at 60fps “well it’s only 30fps on console” etc etc).

I’m keen to play some jet set but my success rate with Japanese games on Pc has been pretty poor the last 10 years.

How is it?

It's fine really considering its a port of the newer XBLA/PSN release and not the DC version, has KB/M support but I've only used controller with it . It'll run 4K/60 on a modest setup without breaking a sweat too, from what I remember you can only really change resolution & AA in the options

It's locked to 30 fps, so if even a 60 fps lock is problematic for you, give up on the idea.
The last time I tried to play it (few months ago) it also kept crashing on startup and I don't remember what I had to do to get it to work, I think renaming exe or something.

Sega gave it away a few years back. I finished it on PC back then and the port is absolutely fine.

the game logic is tied to the framerate, so it's locked to 30fps, it does run on any potatoe tho... like I played it on my shitty old Laptop back then and I got it to 4k on that thing without issue.
and 4K on a Geforce 820m is not something you can do with many games 🤣

I can't remember, was it only 30 fps on Dreamcast, too?

The PC port on Steam is probably the best way to play it as it included all three soundtracks didn't it? Runs at high resolutions fine but if I recall it's locked at 30fps due to physics reasons and only runs in 16:9 or 4:3.

I had a good time with it. Now I just wish the sequel would also get ported.
Especially because Xbox emulation ain't great. I got it working but it took jumping through some hoops. It'd be great of it pops up on GamePass as a full-fledged port streamlined for use experience.

Also, to OP, the steam version of Jet Set was A-OK

alright thanks for that i think i'll give it a pass

It's very good, minus a bizarre bug that causes my save games to no longer work. I followed the advice online, no luck.

This might be ban-able I have no idea; pay for the game, then download the 'Redream' emulator and a GDI of the Dreamcast version, play that.

One other reason that might be worth doing that is the black crush issue with the colours. For some reason, they turned up the contrast, causing the darker tones to basically not display properly.

Otherwise, this game is amazing and peak Sega. You're a bad man/woman/thing for not having played it already.
