Reporting out of the UK points towards the console wars heating up with no clear winner in sight for 2022. As it stands today, December will decide which console comes out on top, with only 20,000 units separating the Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch. November was the best-selling month for consoles all year, boosted by Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and also massive, record-setting game releases.

Last month, PlayStation 5 was the top-selling console, but by the end of October, all three consoles were within 40,000 units of one another.

From a 40,000 difference in October to a 20,000 gap in November, the console war is tightening and heating up entering the last month of the year. Until the latest Pokemon titles were released, the Nintendo Switch was lagging in the UK, having recently overtaken the Xbox One as the third best-selling console of all time in the region. With no more major exclusives coming this year for any of the three consoles, the race has entered its final stretch for the title of 2022's best-selling console in the UK.

Chris ding is kind of making this seem like a nascar race, but this is an interesting development.

I never expected that all 3 companies and their gaming systems would be so close to each other in sales this year, and they are close enough that it would call come down to December. Less than 20,000 units apart across ALL 3 systems says Chris Ding.

This is good news for gamers, this means that the Xbox Series and the PS4 the new home consoles on the block, are both doing fantastic. For those with Switches that hasn't slowed down much either with it coming back to toward the top after a strong November with some great deals I noticed.

Phil Spencer better make sure the games come out in 2023 and there aren't anymore delays because Xbox has managed to not drop a beat with no major releases this entire year but there's no way they can get away with it twice.

I think the most surprising thing about the UK games market is that GOW was a strong system mover for the PS5, but it wasn't enough to move Sony significantly ahead of the other two.

The UK market is a strange one.

Not that strange. PS5's are still in limited supply and fairly hard to find in the UK, without resorting to paying over the odds for bundled packages.

Xbox series consoles are readily available and have been for months. Plus, there have been deep discounts for Series S for Black Friday so it makes sense that Xbox will have a strong Holiday period.

So xbox still sold alot, with 2022 state?

Do consumers care about 1st party game outputs, or do they just upgrade for gamepass, and 3rd party games?

The top sellings games for Microsoft and Sony consoles are usually some permutation of COD, FIFA, and Rockstar. Casual gamers are especially prone to switch now that games are cross-play and cross-progression. Nintendo is the only console maker which sustains itself on first party sales. The other two live off subscription revenue and the 30-40 percent cut of all games sold within their respective marketplaces.

It's strange to me because 3rd party split between ps5/series is typically 70/30. Although I understand there's the blind spot of digital va physical difference and I know series s is likely lead in Xbox sales.

Like I said in the other thread. Nobody in January would have predicted that the 3 would be so close at year end. Basically whoever wins Dec is going to win the year unless the splits are super small.

Digital sales changes the dynamics on the total split.
Xbox players rarely buy physical salesm, xss is digital. Plus PS is seeing a rise on digital sales.

XSS is having around 60%, if we go by japan data. But US might change that though.

My god over and over people keep saying this when it's not true. Xbox consoles are not readily available for months. The only time I've seen a PS5 or Xbox on a shelf when was they first get them in stock and then bam sold out. The series S has been a aila le but not the X. If the PS5 was so strapped for units it wouldn't have a 10million lead over the Xbox. Both are selling. Better than their previous consoles so the " ps5 just doesn't have enough units for demand" is BS. It's literally been instock online at Sony, best buy ,target and Walmart every week for 2 months . I just bought my 17th ps5 last week and best buy had them again all day today.

Nvm this is for the UK. 😁

Comes in limited quanitiy but stock sells out quick. Its out of stock right now from most major retailers (Amazon, Argos, Currys etc.), except those with bundles.

Have been able to order Series X from Amazon, Currys etc for months. Series S is always available. I guess you don't live in the UK if you talk about Best Buy/Walmart.. we don't have those.

Really cool to see all 3 performing their best and the industry just humming along. For me consoles and handhelds are better than PCs or VR, it's just how I enjoy gaming. Power on and play without the hassle.

I'd like to know the breakdown of S vs X

Hardcore gamers that hang around forums these days are myopic on these things with the whole holding back the generation narrative (which makes no sense so long as we're supporting 8th gen still), I'm guessing the Series S is doing serious heavy lifting in saving Xbox this generation, both in terms of the smaller die making for greater availability and selling to people who just wanted a 9th gen console and it was what they could get, in emerging markets, and as a secondary console to a PS5, which at half the cost more people might consider vs doubling up with an SX.

Gaming is as healthy as ever.
We all win.

It's clear Sony still don't have the stock to keep up with demand.

Absolutely blowing my mind that the year Sony has horizon, gran turismo 7 and god of war ragnarok....and launches their new playstation plus service. Microsoft are basically neck and neck with them and have literally nothing but gamepass steady releases of decent content.

Amazing achievement for all tbh, sales are really good across all three consoles. How good is that?

????
Sony can't make enough consoles to meet demand. So what difference are those games going to make for Sony genius?

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Starfield is already being primed as a system seller, other games like Motorsport, even Redfall to a lesser extent, will ship systems.

If/when the acti deal closes, just imagine all the Diablo, CoD bundles etc.

The success is theirs for the taking.

Sony have one console. Xbox have a much cheaper and less capable console. But you knew that but thought you'd try to spin it that they have two..........
If they aren't identical and have the same price it's 2 consoles. Trying to say Sony has 1 console, Xbox has 2 and Switch has 3 is asinine.

Not that it really makes any difference.

They all play the same games in thier ecosystem.

Both Xbox and PS5 exclusives have low ass attach rates. Exclusives do well but most gamers buy where their friends are playing COD, madden etc.

It's one console. Series S and X have different specs and huge price difference therefor two different consoles. Your opinion is the only thing that is asinine.

You're blown away by the fact the system with more demand but more limited supply, is narrowly ahead year-to-date against a platform holder who has two systems with relatively less demand, but the cheaper of those two being much more widely available year-round, and had big (huge, even) discounts last month...in a market that is generally considered one of the two strongest for a certain platform holder who otherwise tends to underperform notably in most global markets in relation to rivals?

Uh, okay I guess?

What led you to this conclusion? You should also remember that an anticipated release coming in the 11th month of the year can't suddenly help make up lower-than-expected supply for a supply-constrained system from at least the first 7 - 8 months of that same year.

Especially considering the game in question mostly sold the vast majority of copies on the system that was heavily supply-constrained earlier in the year.

I couldn't get a PS5 for my daughter, so I bought a Series S for her. Guess I'm not the only one?
