Digital Foundry: The Callisto Protocol - PS5 vs PS4/PS4 Pro vs Xbox One/One X - Last-Gen Tech Review!

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

The Callisto Protocol is a properly current-gen game and yet... it's available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles! To what extent have the visuals and performance been pared back to accommodate vintage 2013 consoles? And can PS4 Pro and Xbox One X horsepower help at all? PlayStation 5 and indeed Xbox Series S comparisons prove illuminating, as Oliver Mackenzie reveals.

Summary:

- "Seriously downgraded on last gen"
- Texture quality has been hugely simplified across the board, various textures are simply missing and can take upwards of 10 seconds to load
- Geometry complexity is also simplified, various geometry items are missing in places
- Shadow maps, hair quality etc also reduced drastically
- Despite the above, in a vacuum, the final results look decent for a PS4/XBO gen game

- Additional resources on PS4 Pro and One X doesn't manifest much other than better post processing, self shadowing and depth of field (tied to resolution)

- One S: 720p to 900p
- PS4: 864p to 1080p, generally close to 1080p
- Pro and One X: Target 1440p, Pro can drop but One X is seemingly locked
- PS4 Pro and One X are neck and neck in terms of image quality and features

- The cut-scenes on last gen have a 24 FPS cap
- One S does a poor job of maintaining 30 FPS game play. Can drop to low 20s in combat
- PS4 can also drop to low 20s but holds to 30 more often. More serviceable than One S
- PS4 Pro and One X are generally 30 FPS experience with Pro having some drops to mid 20s in some places and One X generally locked to 30 during game play

- PS4 / Pro / One X offer a decent serviceable experience whereas One S is not recommended.

I don't think PS4Pro/XboxOneX needed to switch to 24fps for cutscenes.
I think the developer just made a single version of the game (base PS4) and the other versions were based on that.
It might get patched to 30fps in the future (for the enhanced consoles).

do not tempt fate do not contrain Wonder Woman's thighs do not do not
ohh wow the difference in character rendering and texture quality is kinda mindblowing.

This has to be the biggest leap between last and currentgen versions of the same game right?

Wishful thinking.

They should have just delayed the game for Xbox, and put out the Xbox version during the summer on game pass.
