I can’t help but feel Rise of The Ronin and Ghost of Tsushima 2 are going to be in direct competition in 2024

Yes, they are different time periods but they deal with the same subject matter. Basically ronin samurai, open world, sword and stealth combat. Ghost of Tsushima came out in 2020, i would say late 2024 is most likely and if its 2025 it will still be coming out under a year of Ronin. This is also the Year Assassins Creed Red is set to come out, so we may very well get 3 big samurai/ninja games in the span of a year. Kind of feel like Sony is stepping on their own studios toes working on another game with a similar setting and theme.

Sort of like they did for Days Gone after The Last of Us came out.

Kind of inevitable with the success of GoT.

Happens everytime a new settng or gameplay style get popular. Just look at how many Arkham like games came out after Arkham Asylum.

I for one, welcome this "new" setting. Better than another super hero game, or medieval fantasy, sci fi, whatever. This still feels somewhat fresh. Ronin looks really good and I trust Sucker Punch enough to deliver another amazing game.

Yuppers, the chances of both dropping in 2024 are quite high, I would say.
Sucker Punch released the game in July 2020 and the online mode in October that year. A year later not only was the studio supporting the online mode quite well, they spent it hard at work on the expansion Iki Island and the PS5 version of the game (Director's Cut) that released in August 2021.

I'd say they really only started working on the 2nd entry a but over a year ago. This isn't a huge studio like Insomniac, Sony Santa Monica and Naughty Dog.

They also started developing Ghost of Tsushima after they released Infamous DLC in 2014 and they took more than 6 years to release it.

I'd say a 2025 is honestly quite likely. That would be 4 years or a bit less of this project in full development.

Sony is not known for having overlapping exclusives.
If both are 2024, either there's half a year in between or one of those gets delayed. Still plenty of time for something to go wrong

Well, it is a competition If one side have a chance. In this case GoT2 will beat whatever game that comes close so it is not a competition really.

TLOU2 and Ghost of Tsushima came out 3 weeks apart.

Same for Forbidden West and GT7.

I do agree even if they both release in 2024 they don't have to be released close to each other.

tbh, we don't even know how similar theses games are going to be, all we know are both take place in japan.

Thats like saying 2 games will be alike cause they are based in America as if THAT is all one needs to know or something lol One of them is set in the Bakumatsu period (ba ku ma tsu) around 1850s

Ghost is set in 1270s

We are talking about almost a 600 year difference...this would be like playing Red Dead Redemption and loving it, then hearing about RDR2 and being hype and then hearing about a game set in America during 1400s about war between Native American tribes and think that this ideas are comparable and direct competition.

They are separated by hundreds upon hundreds of years, I'm sure the gameplay and other core elements will reflect that and that even AC Red has its place as its actually about Ninja and not Samurai (though I'm sure they'll be in it lol)

So I think all 3 games have their place and being set in Japan doesn't automatically mean they are in competition.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is not in direct competition with Mafia 1 remake and its funny cause those 2 games are not only closer in date then the games we are talking about, they conceptually support more ideas then the games we are talking about regarding outlaws, robbing, killing, being a villain of sorts, anti-hero etc.

They are all day 1s in my book btw, besides Ronin. I don't know enough about it just yet. Sucker Punch can be trusted and Ubisoft has done a great job on the last 3 AC open world rpg titles, that Red will be a day 1 for me.

Mmm, I have to admit that I never finished GOT. I thought the gameplay and visuals were great, but it was all a bit too dour for my tastes I think - particularly as far as the main character is concerned. I’m hoping the sequel has more fun injected into it. You could say The Witcher 3 is miserable as well, but at least Geralt gets jiggly with it and there are the occasional funny moments.

And chasing a fox for the umpteenth time is not fun.

We don't even know that SP is actually working on GoT2, do we? I really hope they are though, the original is a top 3 game from last gen for me (although I didn't play it until the PS5 version).

Ratchet & Clank 2 11. November 2003
Jak II: Renegade 14. Oktober 2003
Probably not often but I guess releasing somewhat similar games close isn't the end of world.

I guess planning the exact date might have gotten harder nowadays, with the very long dev times. I would assume they will try to have them a few months apart and also avoid AC, maybe in agreement with Ubi. But one team might be faster than expected the other slower, and could mean closer together or further apart than planned. We'll see.

This is like saying one Gundam game is based on AC timeline and another one is based on UC, a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT timeline that has NOTHING to do with it!

Guess what, your Western audience still just sees two mech games.

OP was cogent on his point "Basically ronin samurai, open world, sword and stealth combat."

Whether this is a big deal or a mistake is a different matter of opinions, but come on. The two titles, in terms of the perception of the product, are very similar thematically.

That aborted game is the reason why it took so long before Sucker Punch released their next game.

I love this setting, so can’t get enough of it. They’ll both be fine, people like me will be buying both of them, probably day 1 for sure. I do think these games go further into the ‘Samurai’ route and wish there was more presence of Ninja elements/stealth games.

I'm over this setting. It's getting boring and as bland to look at than generic desert levels in games.

Only reason why I'm going to play GoT 2 is because of Jin Sakai as a character.

Team Ninja need to seriously evolve creatively as a studio and learn a new genre setting for their new IP.

Only just found out about Rise of the Ronin. Looking at the reveal dates, I was on holiday..! Adding it to my backlog.

The trailer looked cool, but there’s not much evidence Rise of the Ronin will even be quite as good yet.

Being a big-budget 1st party title will help GoT2 stand out more… outside of whatever unique features either game will have.

I think Sony and Ubisoft will make sure they won't be released together and will keep a fair distance between all 3 games, maybe at least half a year or so. Regarding similarities between GoT and Rise of the Ronin, I assume Sony will make sure that even if they have a similar genre and setting they are different enough to make sure the player interested on them buy both, while also appealing slightly different types of players with differences they may have.

As an example one could be mainly focused on combat, other could be more focused on cinematic narrative and puzzles, the other could be more focused more on stealth. One can be more realistic and historically accurate while other can be more fantasy oriented with more magical stuff. One can be more about samurais and other more about ninjas. One can focus its environments on cities and other ones can focus more in the nature. One can focus more on martial arts, other can focus more on katanas and similar, other can focus more on traps or long range stuff like kunais and bows. Etcetera.

Rise of the Ronin is also going to be a big-budget Sony 1st party title (specifically and 2nd party one), by far the biggest Team Ninja game that is taking them many years of development.

I'm pretty sure Sony will take care of its quality and also to make sure it doesn't overlap GoT and AC Red too much in terms of release date and game type. And that Ubi will also work with Sony to make sure they don't overlap each other too much and that do it in a way that there's enough slice of the pie for everyone.

Represent.

Represent(ative) of bad opinions
Sucker Punch has a LOT to improve on to reach the standard set by Sony First Party. Ghosts of Tsushima looked great, but was straight out of the PS3 era design wise.

Auto fail stealth missions in particular were really bad. Same death animations for every kill. Standoffs all playing out the same exact way.

Sequel could be great but they have lots of work to do. First one was a 6/10

Don't forget before that, we'll have Yakuza (I mean Like a Dragon!) Ishin, which takes place in the same time period as RotR at a smaller scale. Ancient Japan use to be a popular setting, but it hasn't been for a while and I welcome its return.

And although it's not Japan, Where Winds Meet and Project Perciever look very similar too (ancient China, swordsman, lush vegetation, open world), so it's a good time to be a fan of this microgenre if they ever come out:

DAMN the animation looks so fluid and dynamic. That's one of the problems I have with GoT, outside combat Jin's traversal movements are quite stiff and his interaction with the enviornment is stiff as well. He doesn't even have proper inverse kinematics when he's going up a stairway or a slope, which has been standard for some time now in AAA games. Hope they get back to the slick moves, which felt so good in Infamous.

There is more then enough that is different that they all can co-exist.

I forgot about Assassin’s Creed RED. It’s hard to say when Ubi will give a timetable, but hopefully after Mirage because the abundance of AC games seems somewhat confusing.

I’d like to say that Sony is definitely aware of the inherent comparisons, 10-12 months between the two releases would do them both justice.

I’m pretty interested in seeing the differences in gameplay from both.
