Digital Foundry: Grand Theft Auto 5's Ray Traced Reflections Upgrade Tested on PS5 and Xbox Series X

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

We'd seen ray traced shadows before in the current-gen refresh of GTA 5 - but very recently, Rockstar went back and improved the game still further, adding RT reflections. On top of that, very minor issues we had with the Xbox Series version of the game were also addressed (likely before the RT upgrade). In this video, Oliver Mackenzie shows us the improvements and limitations of the new GTA 5 fidelity mode.

Fixed the shadows on cars on xbox. Nice. Looks great. Xbox now has the best version with better cube maps.

- New RT reflections are added to the 30 FPS Fidelity mode which was targeting 4K already.
- Reflections are very sharp and high resolution, DF goes over in detail all the ways it improves the image.
- Though there are some significant issues which put it below some other games RT implementations
- RT reflections only cover up to 10 meters, after that it falls back on old cube maps
- Shifting reflections is also an issue as you approach surfaces from a distance
- RT reflections don't effect bigger bodies of water (as in don't work there)
- First person animations also don't work accurately
- DF thinks some assets could have been reworked to make better use of RT reflections

- Fidelity mode now adds DRS with low to 1872p and highs of 2160p
- Visual settings are the same across PS5 and SX
- Shadow texture missing under cars issue on Xbox has been fixed
- In Non RT mode, Series X has higher resolution cube maps
- Other than the above, no visible visual difference.

- Very hard to make frame rate drops from 30 in fidelity mode, only possible running right into large alpha fires, i-e it is very stable in general game play.

- Series S and PC didn't get these updates (yet).

I love rtx reflections, it is exactly like real life where every piece of metal can be used as a mirror, and with more visual clarity than an actual mirror.

Sometimes when i want to visit a mirror house in a luna park, i just go into a parking lot full of cars to save money.

In your dreams maybe. PC version is better at everything other than the reflections that only are present in the pathetic slideshow mode.

You meat sacks do realize this is a thread about a patch for the PS5 and Series consoles, right? The quote you are responding to is obviously talking about consoles.

Oh, rly? Maybe read the entire conversation before calling others stupid:

Once it gets the update, deffo. It's currently behind consoles though. Should be out in 2023 then PC will look amazing with full raytracing.

What time is it?

Behind in terms of features? Sure. But overall fidelity? Obviously not. Context matters, brave warrior.

Also, curious the post you chose to reply to. I sense projection.

It's even more amazing how you can ignore your fanbase by not adding any single player content.

They make money with gta online.

They learned after the 2 expansion for gta4.

A big dlc from rockstar with the same quality of the main campaign would probably cost like a complete average game from other publishers.

I'm ok if they put all the efforts\budget in the gta6 campaign.

The fanbase is paying them too much money for GTA Online for them to care about investing in SP content.

That and GTA online has continued storylines for all the main characters in it anyway.

Seeing how they've done GTA 5 at this point fuck GTA 6 they not getting my money, seen all the leaked footage and it looks like a PS4 game that was supposed to been out already.

The rumors were true that RDR2 really was the retirement game for the OG's that had skill and craft.
Facts.

I am very impressed how well gta 5 is scaling.
Both 30 rt and 60rt modes look great.
New anti aliasing method is helping A LOT with image quality. pc version always had weird cutscenes stutter and aliasing that was impossible to get rid off. Some sort of mipmap bias aliasing was always there.
This new version is clean AF.

I kinda hate gta 5 story. Wish gta 4 would get the same treatment.
But it's cool to drive around

Should've tested the framerate in some of the areas around Mount Chilead. The framerate chugs down to the 20s in several spots. I'd hate to see how low it goes now with RT reflections thrown into the mix.

If the game has no performance issue then I wonder if lower cube maps on PS5 is a bug, just like how shadows underneath the car was missing on SX ? This is why they are using dynamic resolution in the first place to get performance and devs do not have to worry about gfx settings. 🤷‍♂️
