Is the Halo Infinite campaign worth it at 50% off?

Is 50% enough of a discount?

I quite enjoyed it; however, many of the criticisms are legitimate. Campaign is rather short if you play it on Normal or Easy. There is a lack of biomes/environments throughout the world. I did many of the side missions to increase the length of the game, but even these are copy and paste assassinations. Overall I would give it a 6.5 or 7 out of 10. The original trilogy, Reach, and ODST remain the standards in this series.

Just get it on gamepass for a dollar. They let you choose PC gamepass and gamepass ultimate and one of those two should have a $1 deal going on for non-subscribers.

I played for a few hours but it was very workman like. It takes two hours to get to the open world. Then when you get there you realize that its basically the same shit we had back in Halo Combat Evolved but slightly bigger. Combat is the same. Grappling hook is good but didnt do much to change things up.

It isnt bad. It isnt great. It isnt a waste of time.

Different strokes. My experience regarding the combat and the grappling hook were night and day different than yours. The mobility and verticality it allows makes the combat feel very fresh. Plus the wide variety of shit you can set up by throwing shit around. It really is more of a sandbox than any Halo before it. The combat is as fun as you want it to be.

If you like Halo then yes, absolutely. It’s a bloody great time. Probably my favourite Halo campaign since Halo 3.
Better than Reach?

Would I be more happy if it had more than one biome? Sure. I think they could have added a bit more varied vegetation and play around with snow and stuff like that, but at the end of the day, did it really take away from my enjoyment of the game? I don't think so. I just accepted that the game take place on a tiny portion of the ring that is artificially built and thus not exactly full of variety.

As did I. But what does the OP want to hear? My opinion based on concessions or a more truthful objective view of my experience?

Don't expect anything in margins like Halo 1,2,3, it is more like "watered" Far cry experience.
Overall solid AA game experience.

Game isn't getting enough credit here.

Yeah, the world isn't truly "open world" in size, and the single biome is disappointing, but 343 expanded the Halo formula in novel ways (and the majority of the changes really work), the visuals are really solid, the music is exquisite, the game tries to do more with Master Chief as a character than ever before, but most importantly...

The gameplay. The combat and gameplay loop is the best ever put in a console first person shooter this side of DOOM or Titanfall 2. The gameplay loop itself reminds me a lot of Spider-Man on PS4/PS5. Repetitive but in all the right ways, where you get into this groove/zone of clearing areas and you just feel like a complete badass. Also like DOOM or Spider-Man, the combat starts to feel like a choreographed ballet as you level up and gain more abilities to use during encounters. It's so fun.

It's one of the best first person shooter campaigns ever when talking strictly from a gameplay perspective.

The thread title is the question essentially. It's currently 50% off on Steam and I'm wondering whether it's now worth a shot?

I don't care about the story (never have in this franchise) so all I care about is whether or not the gameplay and campaign structure make it worth my while at that price. Is it varied enough and is it well structured?

Steam reviews are mixed with a slight slant towards being on the positive end of the spectrum so this isn't an easy one to figure out. I've already refunded a game this sale (crysis remastered collection - they really fucked up by making those remasters based on the console versions, the suit controls and lack of freedom are a joke) so don't want to push it. I'm looking for a solid FPS with a good campaign to replace that.

Somehow this was Neogaf GOTY last year but yet this is still a question that needs asking.

So what do people think now a year later?
I paid $60 for the campaign and loved every moment of it. Spent more time playing the campaign than any other on a single play through. Largest world to do date as well.

The gameplay is good but the scenery lacks variety and the story is half baked. I had the "is that it?" reaction when I finished it.

Is this trying to balance out the perceived lack of credit with far too much?

Opinions seem as mixed here as they are on Steam so think I'll wait it out until its even cheaper then.

Won't bother with gamepass, would rather buy something else for the money that is actually going to be worth my time at the price.
Why not sub to Game Pass for $1 and then try the game out? If you like it, buy the game on Steam for 50% off. If you think the game is trash, you're only out a dollar and a small amount of time.

As an Xbox player, I can't stand MCC and Infinite because I have to constantly download stupid updates that are huge for games I barely ever play.

FUCK THIS.

Infinite gets a lot of shit for its story, but I'd love to see someone try to summarise the "plot" of Reach.
Pretty concise summary here,
Halo: Reach takes place days before the original title in the franchise, Halo: Combat Evolved. The United Nations Space Command has been at war with the Covenant, a fleet of aliens driven to exterminate the human race. With the demise of several human-run colonies, Reach is the only one left. This is where a group known as Noble Team comes into play. A group of soldiers, or Spartans, Noble Team attempts to stop the Covenant by any means. The player takes control of Noble Six, a newcomer to the group, as they aid in the battle against these alien foes.

To say that Halo Reach elicits dread would be an understatement. Halo: Combat Evolved’s story revolves around UNSC’s continued war against the Covenant, one that they couldn’t overcome in the past. Longtime players know how Reach’s story will play out, and no matter what actions they take, the result will be the same. This makes the player’s interactions with their fellow Noble Team members all the more impactful. Nonetheless, the team pushes onward, serving as a collective shield against an increasingly helpless human race.

Maybe I should have mentioned this in my OP but gamepass is not a route I'm going down for just this game. Would rather save the $1 offer (if it even exists for me since I'd be a returning subscriber) for when I have a whole bunch of games I want to try - that's likely to be at some point next year if all goes to plan in terms of the release schedule.

I have the money to spend and I want to spend it on something that's going to be worthwhile in terms of my time. I'll wait until its cheaper and then will reassess.

Going to go for Far Cry 6 instead and using the steam wallet money I have for Neon White and Supraland six inches under. Someone else mentioned far cry in this thread and it makes sense in terms of the structures of the 2 games. Should be a decent enough showcase for my recently upgraded hardware as well.

It's not even a problem of the story itself for Infinite. Pretty much all the game is going in another forerunner base to watch Chief watching holograms as the camera is traveling around him to look like God of War, never seen a narrative that bad in a long time.

After the intro the game is just plain austerity. Never seen a game where the devs just don't give anything to make you excited at any moment. Even games deemed as repetitive have their moments.

People talk about the only biome but that's just a part of the problem. It's not like there is anything interesting to see in that one little biome. Even if some content was cut, let's assume it was meant to be one third of the content, it would have been a bad third anyway.

The fact they nailed the gameplay perfectly makes it all the more frustrating.

That's the premise, not what actually happens during the missions. Out of 11 missions, the last 2 have some form of meaningful objective of preserving a Cortana fragment. For the rest I think you'll struggle to remember what the point of anything was, or what exactly was achieved.
That is due to the outcomes not changing anything leading up to CE. Humans get fucked is the premise.

I will still take that game's premise and structure over the angry murder ape yelling at me at every rinse and repeat checkpoint and some weird "love story" in Infinite. Murder ape is the dullest and most uninspiring baddy in Halo history.

Honestly I wouldn't buy it, it's too bad they don't have short weekly GP memberships so you could just sign up for $3 and finish it. It's short, the story is almost non existent and after about 10 minutes or so of gameplay you've basically seen the entire world. It's all the same metal dungeon or the same ground, rocks and trees. The gameplay is great but everything else? it really does seem like a game that had a ton of things cut from it just to get out the door. It didn't deserve the reviews it got, it's a 6 at best as an overall package with the gameplay being 9 and everything else being average at best.

Energy is a small price to pay to now have my time wasted by sitting through an update that could have happened days ago without be taking part, but to each his own.
Energy is the highest price to pay, along other things we waste without second thought.

Well designed games don't need 60 GB updates every 2 weeks.

That's really the best way to go. Take advantage of the $1 deal, play the campaign and see for yourself.
Edit: not needed, sorry GHG.

Yeah I played it through Gamepass, and I’m glad I didn’t buy it. The grappling hook was cool, the combat was tight, but it felt samey and boring for me, not enough exploration rewards, mostly similar enemy bases spread out on an otherwise empty map with no real biome differences.

That specifically is a very good idea.

I guess I'm spoiled then since my energy prices are amongst the cheapest in the US, and I also don't worry about update size and timing in regards to how I view the quality of a game.

It's pretty good as a standalone game. The only real big flaw to me is that it's the third game in a row where it kind of just discards everything the last game set up and resolves it mostly offscreen, but the plot Guardians set up was sort of garbage anyway.

I don’t get the praise for the campaign. The open world feels so outdated in almost every way.

Saying that, it’s better than 4 and 5’s but that’s not saying much.

Personally, I wouldn’t buy it for over £15.

It is a grear campaign worth the full price.
Should be better for a main Halo game, but it is still great. Especially fun and engaging in legendary.
Buy it!

Yes if you don't have GP.
The AI is still unmatched imo. Even from the original version I would put that against any FPS. Hopefully they can use the AI in COD.
