Golden Eye 007 coming to Game Pass and Switch Online on January 27

The Xbox version is not a full remake. The XBLA version was never released and leaked last year.

It is likely Microsoft had to compromise with Nintendo and could only enhance the original game at 4k/60fps with no online while Nintendo got to add online to their version.

Nintendo didn't add online, the NSO emulator has P2P online and that's what it uses.

Did anyone finish the campaign via the XBLA build on PC? I remember mine crapping out in level two so I didn't go any further. Frustrating that this isn't built on that or on PC.

No, you need to have the Switch Online Expansion Pack and the online MP is just through that emulator and not the game itself so no server browser or matchmaking.
Thanks, seems like a massive waste to be honest and I’m certainly not signing up to expansion to play it.

Thankfully I have rare replay. Will just blast through it on there.

It's a give take if the trailers are accurate. Xbox gets a much better looking version without online multiplayer, switch gets online multiplayer with awful framerates.
Right, you get the unbridled N64 version, complete with the N64 NSO controller if you snagged one, with online play. Warts and all, but it's the game we all loved so many years ago, I guess is the selling point.

I'm more bummed to find out that "online multiplayer" is just with friends. There's no matching making.

I’m bummed out that they didn’t add bots. Still excited as hell though. I used to love trying to speed run all of the levels, can’t wait to do it all over again 25 years later.

Other than being able to play online, what are the technical improvements?

"Widescreen" is not new, the original game had this on N64.

Resolution and improved frame rate? Both done on emulators since forever. Controls were not an issue with the original either, can be easily adjusted to play the same as dual stick modern shooters. Even with proper dual analog.

The Switch emulation seems to struggle a bit from the video. XBOX version obviously looks less janky since it can handle the N64 emulation much faster.

But still.... it's just emulation and nothing else?

The Xbox version is a full remake.

From that trailer it's identical to the original so i'm not sure what you are talking about.

Wait, what?

Didnt it used to have bot matches like Timsplitters, I know Perfect dark did. I could have sworn Goldeneye did too..

Nope, that feature was introduced in Perfect Dark.

I'm okay with that lol. The game has super heavy auto-aim as is.

Which you could always turn off very easily in the options.

Yeah but you need auto aim if there's no gyro

Not necessarily. With the crappy default control options, sure. But if you use the 1.2 option or the other one with the twin controllers/sticks, you get much better precision since you can fully aim with the analog stick.

Auto aim can mess with your headshots. You have to aim slightly above their heads to hit them, lol.

Can't wait to play it so I have license to Diss.

Will be interesting to see if I end up liking it.

You mean all this time you dissed it without ever trying it?

I mean that's what i figured from your posts in the other thread. Same as a lot of 90's PC folk who never played the game but always had a strong opinion for it because "FPS can only be good on PC".

I knew it but didn't want to devalue the conversation. Spoiler alert though, you won't like it because your mind is already set to not like it.

Ive tried it, but never completed it.

And that's not true. I didn't hate it, I just didn't find the game special.

Completing the game this time (unless I dislike it too much) will give more weight to my opinion.

Ya worked fine - But there's also a community patch now that fixes a lot of the jankyness.

Never played it before so I'll be interested to see how if it lives up to its reputation.

You have to also keep in mind that a lot of features in this game didn't exist in FPS games before, even on PCs. People who played it when it was released experienced a lot of things for the first time that now you take for granted. And a lot of these things (not all though) have been done better in later games.

So it's easy to overlook how much impact the game did for people who played it in 1997.

For campaign the 360 remaster is the only way to go. Takes about 30 seconds of research to figure out how to play it on PC. They literally upgraded the visuals on every front and you can switch to old-school visuals with the press of a button. It was flawless.

Do I need Gamepass or can I just buy it?
You get it for free if you have rare replay.

You can buy it.

Why would you need Gamepass?

I begin to be more skeptical about Gaf being a gaming forum and instead a sub reddit for people getting into gaming.

How does it compare to games like Doom which came out years before?

Apparently you only get it free if you own the DIGITAL version of Rare Replay. If you own the physical disc you are out of luck!
Apparently you cannot purchase Goldeneye separately
So, either pay for Gamepass.......and not own it.........or pony up $30 for the digital copy of Rare Replay.
Fuck that BS!!

It's highly likely the only version that could be agreed upon by all parties during negotiation.

Haven't played it since I was at a friends house over 20 years ago.

I do have Rare Replay, so that's nice.
