GoldenEye 007 |OT| 4-Player Split Screen James Bonding

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

Platforms
Nintendo Switch (requires Online + Expansion Pack)
Xbox (available on Game Pass, part of the Rare Replay collection)

Features
The Switch version will feature online multiplayer and widescreen. Strangely, the Xbox version will be limited to split screen co-op. The Xbox version however includes dual analog stick support, 4K resolution, and a "consistent refresh rate".

Any update on unlock time and also the achievement lists? Allegedly it has multiplayer achievements, and for a game with no online play…. That’s insane to me

Truthfully don’t care THAT… much… but still.

There are some multiplayer achievements, but it seems they're for the included split screen couch co-op multiplayer.

This requires me knowing humans my age for couch gaming

No. No thank you. It’s not happening.
Could do all of these by just plugging in a second controller and having it go unused. Lots of stuff there like "win 5 matches in a row" or "shoot an unarmed opponent" that'd be easy to cheese if you really want that 100%.

True. Could do that. I’ll focus obviously on the single player ones first and see if I’m compelled

It’s been a long time and I’ve got likely thousands of hours in this game. I’m genuinely looking forward to it.

I was just downloading Hi Fi Rush on my basement Xbox and noticed Goldeneye is up and available. I played the first level.
I'm in the US.
Enjoy!

Played it for a bit on Xbox (Series X), disappointing release to be honest. This isn't Rare's in-house remaster, it's a high-res port of the N64 version by Code Mystics. There's numerous graphical issues, and the framerate frequently tanks hard, harder than the N64 original if you can believe that. It still plays great, but after seeing what could and should have been, it's tough to swallow. It was free for me, I guess.

Welp, no PC version + the fact it still has slowdown means emulation + hack is still the way to go for me.

EDIT- Here's my impressions of both:

Switch: I want to love it here, but I can't find a modern control scheme.

Xbox Series S: I found a modern control scheme.

Summary: I'm probably going to just bury my time in the single player as a guilty pleasure on the Series S, and hope the Switch gets an update for modern control schemes.

Holy fuck. The Switch version is just the N64 rom with no modern controls.

Play the Xbox version if you need your fix, the Switch version even with multiplayer is unplayable to me.

Edit: False alarm, you can map your Switch controls to make it modern:

I've got two of those Switch N64 controllers. Time to finally try out that method of dual analogue.

For switch players..

In the Switch menu:
  1. Create a control profile for Goldeneye
  2. Remap the left analog stick to function as right analog
  3. Remap the right analog stick to function as left analog
  4. Remap ZR button to function as ZL, so you can fire with ZR
  5. Remap ZL to function as L, so you can manual aim with ZL
  6. (Optional) remap L to function as B, so you can activate things with L.
  7. (Optional) remap R to function as A, so you can switch weapons with R.
  8. (You will now have to navigate using the right analog stick and either A/B or L/R, depending on whether you followed steps 6 and 7.)
  9. Launch Goldeneye and begin a mission, navigating menus with the right analog stick.
  10. Pause, and go over to controls.
  11. Switch from 1.1 Honey to 1.2 Solitaire.
  12. Go over to Settings, and turn the Look Up/Down setting to Upright.
You will now have modern controls! Only issue is that you will only be able to walk in 8 directions, since the stick only emulates the C buttons.

They added a widescreen hack and online multiplayer at least.

How the fuck do you guys set up the controls in this game? The default controls are driving me crazy, I‘m amazed by my little 12 year old me who could play this game with a N64 controller, but the spoiled adult me can‘t play it with two sticks 😅

Yep it is dissapointing, it felt like it was running worse than the switch version along with some graphical issues like flickering geometry. Only issue with the Switch version is that the gamma seems off, it’s too dark.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!

Do you mean on the N64 or the new versions? On the N64 if you set the controls to the 1.2 scheme then the d-pad acts like the left stick and the stick as the right stick in modern FPS, Z trigger under the stick to shoot, buttons A B and to reload and use stuff, left shoulder button over the d-pad to enable the crosshair aiming mode (then pressing left and right while holding that you can lean while backwards crouches, if you hold it for a second you remain crouched even after letting go of the shoulder button/d-pad). It's a fairly modern scheme all things considered.

For emulation you can do the same, select 1.2 and remap you twin stick controller's left stick to act as the d-pad (or use the d-pad), the right stick to act as the analog stick, L trigger as L shoulder to crosshair aim, R trigger as Z trigger to shoot, A and B to whatever buttons you want to use for reload/use. You can also faff about more in the options and find the setting that uses two N64 controllers for dual analog controls and remap accordingly so you have analog control for movement also rather than the d-pad remapped or otherwise but it's hardly necessary.

I dunno how the new official versions are set up but I imagine they have something along those lines available to be comfortable to new users even if the defaults are weird like the N64 defaults instead of 1.2.

Edit: saw a Switch play and they seem to have controls reversed by default so left stick acts as right stick and right stick as left stick because it emulates the default N64 scheme where the c buttons acted as movement and the stick as the look/turn. Dig in the options, surely it can be switched.

Plays pretty much like you'd expect for the most part. I just played Dam for now but I noticed a few things different from the N64 version. First off, the dual analog controls make it vastly more enjoyable imo. Compared to the N64 version where the C strafes made you go faster, it doesn't seem like strafing has any impact on movement speed. Also while holding to aim, you still move at full speed while aiming. Consequently, there is no leaning while aiming at least with the default control setup (there's a few different ones just like the original). Finally, I felt like I got an occasional stutter/slowdown. It happened while strafing and looking at the windows on the end of Dam.

It's still pretty damn fun though. I'm usually not an achievement whore, but I'm really looking forward to getting all them in this.
