Hi-Fi Rush Steam reviews are glowing as it races up the sales chart

What a beautiful artstyle. It looks like what I would have wanted a Megaman Legends game to look like in the modern era.

I hope we get more games like this from xbox studios, seems like something that would have come out of the 360 era, and I mean that in the best way

I thought it looked great, the best game they showed. I wish I had a way to play it, I have a Mac and a Switch. Maybe Microsoft will surprise and port it? (this isn't port begging I hope).

It feels fresh. colorful. fun. Not all those bleak nihilistic brown dark games.

OK, there we go
Goddamn he's fuckin pathetic. Anything remotely positively related to Microsoft you can guarantee he'll contribute nothing to the thread, but you're sure to see his whole ass in the reactions.

Console warriors, you're sad and weird.

This game looks great, I definitely wanna try it. Currently focusing on Demon's Souls remake and then I'll get around to this.

Good to see creative, new games being made and received well....Stray, Vampire Survivors, Pentiment and Hi-Fi Rush (among others).
I've been complaining for years that the majority of games now are sequels, spin-offs, ports, remasters.....
Publishers are mainly creatively bankrupt. Unless this trend of AAAA games only being sequels, ports, remasters, GAAS--- reverses, then this industry is dead. But it's good to see some creativity out there.

Wait, is Tango no longer considered a AAA studio?

Games aren’t studios

The $30 price tag also tells you a lot about how MS thought players would value this release. Obviously the way they dropped it is a bit of an experiment, but the reason they chose THIS title to experiment with us because they didn't see it as much of a potential loss, I think.

They very much saw this game as mid tier Game Pass filler and I think that's selling it a bit short.

Imagine linking the price point with perceived quality and publisher confidence.

Hades 2 and Hollow Knight Silksong are some of the most anticipated games right now, and are widely expected to be in GOTY conversations. Same price point.

Stray launched at $29.99 last year and was a GOTY nominee.

Again, quality is not the point, but if MS had confidence in this game to sell at $60 they would have sold it at that.

Hi-Fi Rush isn't an indie title. It's a 10-12 hour AA action game from a major studio. I think it's far more comparable in scope and perceived consumer value to games like Bayonetta 3, Devil May Cry 5, or Sunset Overdrive than it is to any of the games you mentioned, so it's weird to see it priced more like indie titles.

Bayonetta 3, Yakuza, Sunset Overdrive are AA games .. ?! I think it’s time for you to log off
We can argue about the meaning of AA, versus AAA because those are moving targets, but Hi-Fi Rush is very much comparable to those titles, whatever you want to call them. It's similar in length, production value, quality etc in all the ways that would be relevant to how it's priced and marketed.

Yeah it's undeniably cool for GamePass subscribers who are paying enough attention to see it. It's wonderful to get a happy surprise like that. But it's going to be on fewer people's radar as a result.

Look at how High on Life shot up the charts despite much more divided reviews, a similar length, and twice the price.
Marketing and development costs tend to scale appropriately in Xbox division. I'd be willing to wager that a disproportionate % of the cost of this title was in licensing the music, and by the sound of the selections I've heard thus far, they probably didn't break the bank, if you catch my drift.

Look at Pentiment. Had Starfield not been delayed, that game was probably penciled in as a shadow drop for The Game Awards instead of the sole 2022 1st party game announcement for the year at their "not E3" presentation. Would explain why they showed up empty handed, despite those two dates only being three weeks apart. They could've announced Hi-Fi at TGA, but the game wasn't ready for a shadow drop scenario.

You can question the logic in not showing a trailer at TGA and releasing now vs. the shadow drop strategy, but that's arm chair game publishing and feeding into typically toxic game forum logic, IMO. There is a legitimate argument on both sides for the way Xbox are handling every aspect of their division, but dissecting their marketing strats seems like small peanuts vs. their studio struggles.

High on Life was a pretty high profile release, pardon the pun, because it cost Microsoft a LOT of money to procure exclusivity, AND because it is a good game with a huge potential for bolstering their service, made by a pop culture icon that is, sadly, currently being publicly flayed.

It kind of is...or at least it has the potential to be based on what's being said in the game. I think BootsLoader BootsLoader was trying to point out a potential double standard, but maybe the deeper issue lies within voice and line delivery.

If a character sounds cool enough they can get away with awkward or odd lines and quips.
Saturday morning cartoon and whatever Forspoken is trying to go for is very, VERY different imo. And Hi Fi Rush leans into, in it's style, it's sound, and it's characters. That, and I think the voice actors in Hi Fi Rush sell those lines far better than in Forspoken. It may be a double standard to some, but I'd say it's more reductive to say they're the same simply because of a quipy main character. They're going for very different things, and having played both, Hi Fi Rush is FAR more successful.

It’s a function of the budget. It’s an AA title made by a small subset of a major studio. Easily comparable to the likes of Hades and Stray that are sold at the same price point.

This also has nothing to do with ‘indie’ stuff. Ori and The Will of the Wisps is one of the best metroidvanias ever made, has a 90+ MC rating, was expected to be a critical success and published by Microsoft. Launched at $29.99

Please don’t let people hear you call Devil May Cry 5 an AA game.

Just played an hour (beat the first boss) and absolutely love everything about it. The charming characters, the fantastic animation work, the mechanics, etc... it's all just top tier stuff.

Another banger from Tango! That's three for three from them so far. 🔥

EDIT: Oh fuck, forgot they did Ghostwire also but I've yet to play that. Still, Tango is on top of their game it seems!

Don't hate on Ezekiel_ Ezekiel_ he is genuinely great and the forum wouldn't be the same without him. The lols from him are part of the charm and I think most of them are playing his character.

Love you buddy ❤️
I think it's the opposite, Phil talked about people shitting on games before they came out and how toxic gamers can be, if they showed this a year ago with marketing this game would have a toxic following ready to bomb it, the gamepass release avoided all that.

I think it was a smart move
This is it 100% the trailers nowadays don't do justice to games and so many are quick to jump on the hate bandwagon. If this was shown a year ago it wouldn't be half as succesful as it has been. The hype is fever pitch levels.
Yeah but they didn't shadow drop it at their E3 press conference they buried it in the middle of a low profile off season webcast.
But it's worked completely in their favour, I doubt sales or hype would be anywhere as close. The hype is deserved becuase the game is genuinely amazing and game pass just allows you to fire it up...play it and fall in love with it.

Wait, you're arguing that the game should have cost more?

The game wouldn't exist if MS didn't have faith in it. Stop trying to find things to complain about and enjoy an incredible games at 29.99

Why not sell it at 29.99 and sell 3 to 4 times more copies than at 59.99.....there's reasons that publishers make these moves....

Enjoy the game :)

I don't think showing this traditionally via trailers would have worked out well for this game. The gameplay which I think is its biggest strength followed closely by some of the best cell-shaded graphics I have seen in a while. They really took a risk by combining a rhythm game within an action game setting. Explaining it on the Developer Direct and showing it made it make much more sense. The stealth drop was just the cherry on top.

The humor actually works as opposed to forspoken. It’s weird maybe it’s because it’s very clearly going for a Saturday morning cartoon thing? But also because it doesn’t seem like they want you to take the main character seriously, hes a clear buffoon. Claims he’s gonna be a rockstar from the beginning but gets called on not being able to even play guitar…

Just played it and honestly they even did a shit job of selling it during the showcase.

But what's especially true for this game is that it needs to be played in order to be appreciated. Because of the various feedback systems at play a lot of that is lost by just watching gameplay/trailers.

Rekka is hilarious. Really thought she was awesome. Great VA in English and Japanese.

Some of the robots in English are hilariously depressed too.

Peppermint also has great VA.

Also gotta mention. As much as I’m hyped for redfall - cus I love arkane.

How does this game have all this great visual feedback all around you as an AA title? And they have none on their enemies? Like the whole world moves to the beat, enemies react to each hit, I don’t really get it

Shocker.

When joining a new community it’s always smart to lurk for a while and get a feel for the place. You’re going balls deep with no lube or condom.
I dont care. from my point of view you could close the whole internet and nothing of value would be lost or missed by me.
