Hi-Fi RUSH Began Development In 2017 According To Director

Director of the recently released Hi-Fi RUSH, John Johanas, has dismissed claims that development began after Microsoft's acquisition of Bethesda. Johanes confirmed during the Xbox podcast that development of Hi-Fi RUSH actually began all the way back in 2017.

The surprise release of Hi-Fi RUSH came during the recent Xbox Developer_Direct showcase, where Tango Gameworks shadow-dropped its newest title on Xbox Series X|S and PC. While fans had been eager to hear from Xbox, especially about big titles like Redfall, nobody was expecting a game launch.

Traditionally, Tango Gameworks heads survival horror games, but the recent release is quite the opposite as a rock-and-roll rhythmic action game. Players can explore the colorful universe of Hi-Fi RUSH whilst crushing robots and baddies and keeping up-paced hits as ethe world pulses to the beat of the music. The sudden change in style prompted fans to believe that Microsoft's acquisition as having a hand in this, claims that game director John Johanas has now strongly dismissed.

During the Xbox podcast, director John Johanas was categorical that he made the pitch to Bethesda all the way back in 2017, during the time of the original Evil Within game. He also emphasized how Bethesda had longed to publish something different.

“Probably you know our studio for making horror games with The Evil Within and Ghostwire: Tokyo, but this is something that we've wanted to make that'll really completely change the image of our studio and also pushed us as developers to what we can do, or what's possible, even, in the game universe, because we wanted to kind of do something new, and that's kind of where the original idea- that's essentially how I pitched it," Johanas said. “I knew I wanted this main character that was, like, not a superhero. The big reference point we used was Scott Pilgrim, especially the Edgar Wright Scott Pilgrim because I'm talking about Edgar Wright as an influence. But it's this kind of like anti-hero, in a sense – not that they're evil, but they're just almost dumb."

What is unbelievable is how this game didnt get leaked.
It's funny, the logo leaked, and the name, but the attached images to the leak is like an arena shooter and a blad head chick. (Wonder if this was a ploy to throw people off/catch leakers behind the scenes?)

As the type of game it is/what it is didn't, crazy.

Such a genuine surprise.

I didn't even realize where the game came from, that PS didn't get it, and that some people are upset about it until this thread lol. As someone who has all 3, you should be playing games instead of paying attention to console warring. I did see it was available on Steam but I have GP so of course that's where I grabbed it.

Great demonstration of the "Gamepass Curse" in real time. Apparently, the most important thing is still to show up with a quality game people will want to play. If you do that, such games can make good independent sales AND help support a sub service at the same time. Content is still king and that's reassuring.

What's more unbelievable is how much I found it boring. I felt like it was a fairly uninteresting rhythm game (sort of) wrapped in a boring 3D platformer. I finished the first level and uninstalled it. And take that from someone who loves every rhythm game there is. You focus so much on hitting the beats that you don't really take the time to actually enjoy much of anything else. Not to mention the 3D platforming is awful.

What's even more unbelievable is that doubtless I'm in the minority in this opinion.

So this was probably gonna be multiplatform until Phil removed it from PlayStation in his mission to give players more ways to play.

Bro they bought the effing studio and literally sat there and said "we bought Bethesda to bolster our first party exclusive output"

Classic case of as long as MS keep on releasing games I consider ok for them to release everything is fine. As soon as they have a game I want it's not fair.

Go play forspoken, final fantasy xvi and those other games Sony literally paid to keep off xbox.

Microsoft owns this studio and game.

Hey look it's one of them awful twitter users I mentioned 🤦‍♂️

Couldn't this news just be added to one of the many many Hi Fi rush threads?
I used to listen to red dragons YouTube videos back in the day and thought he had a balanced view on the video game industry. At some point he got right stuck into the console wars. Maybe he will snap back and get final fantasy 7 remake on Xbox for me (won’t hold my breath).

Hmm interesting. So we still haven't really seen what Ms game studios have greenlighted themselves after gobbling up so many studios.

The name was leaked years ago and nobody remembered it. Not even a fuzzy cell phone shot off a screen was released before the game dropped. That's about as leak-free as anything these days.
From December:
R/GamingLeaksandRumors, had a post that was deleted (no source) that stated Hi-Fi Rush was Tango's game, and that it was a rhythm brawler with the graphical style of Jet Set Radio. It was supposedly scheduled for Fall of '23 and X|S only.

This is such an awful take and just dripping with disdain.
