Alan Wake 2 is Remedy's "biggest project yet"

Alan Wake 2 has effectively been in development ever since the launch of the original game 13 years ago - at least, it's been in the back of creative director Sam Lake's mind for all that time - and it's become developer Remedy's "biggest project yet".

"I feel like I never left Alan Wake behind," Lake tells GamesRadar+ in a new interview about the development of Alan Wake 2. "There was always the full intention to return to him; there was always more story to tell, and the characters and the setting were too precious to be forgotten."

Lake says that Alan Wake's story "kept growing and evolving through the years", even as Remedy continued to create new games with original concepts. But games like Quantum Break helped seed the idea that all Remedy's games are part of a single universe, and Control's AWE DLC took what were once Easter eggs up to the level of a full-on crossover. Lake says that "after Control, everything finally clicked into place."

Lake tells us that the intervening years have only made the plans for Alan Wake's return bigger. "You keep the dream alive when you keep actively dreaming it, and make a constant effort to keep it fresh and exciting. If anything, through these years, the dream of Alan Wake 2 has grown more ambitious and more unique. A game project like this is a very complex undertaking - it's our biggest project yet - and a lot of different things need to come together. Not only the concept itself, but the timing and the right partners as well."

I just hope the story is interesting. Controls story stunk and AW2 takes place in a similar dreamlike location I just hope the story is less so and more sensical.

I'm excited about this game, because I love Sam Lake as a writer. I loved Alan Wake. I enjoyed Quantum Break, and I appreciated Control. As much as I revere Sam Lake and Remedy, in general, I don't feel the same way about all their games. While Alan Wake was a unique horror/thriller at the time, with an interesting game play mechanic and incredible setting, there were parts I didn't thoroughly enjoy; Alan Wake himself being a bit...flat and arrogant. He wasn't a particularly likeable character, at the time.

Quantum Break, and Control are both unique as well, but there are aspects of each game I didn't thoroughly enjoy; Control moreso.

To this day, Max Payne is still, imho, their best game. It's Sam's best writing, Remedy's best gunplay and pacing, and has their most likeable/iconic character. I'm definitely excited for a new Remedy game, but none of their games since Max Payne, have been as good as Max Payne, despite their ambitions to better it.

I liked the first one well enough but can imagine that it probabyl aged very poorly.

Hope they greatly improved the combat.

I think its going semi open world like what Alan Wake 1 was supposed to be.
Also Alan Wake 》Every Silent Hill after 4 (hell maybe after 3)

Looks like another Remedy game alright.

One part action game, one part thriller, lots of story and cut scenes. Probably took forever to make.

Likely have disappointing sales.

I like Remedy but nothing has ever come close to Max Payne. I think I dropped alan wake 1 when I was fighting floating washing machines and various other kitchen appliances...no thanks.

I enjoyed Alan Wake 1 well enough to want to play the sequel, and especially that it's their stab at survival horror iirc...might jump on it to see how it fares

I really like Alan Wake but for me, Quantum Break was one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had... The moment I finished that game I went straight into my 2nd and 3rd playthroughs.

It's a shame it wasn't that well received, I'd devour a QB2!

I actually have that installed. Just need some free time. Been wanting to try it for years.

So was Quantum Break and how did that turn out. I still liked it but eh. Remedy to me are nothing but greedy cunts and most of their games are just ok, they never really elevated themselves.

Wait now, the first two Max Payne are amazing.

And Alan Wake really is a great game. Too much hype to overcome and a shitshow of a development and launch.

I'll say it: sentiment would be quite different if these were Sony exclusives.

EDIT: and I loved Control art and mood.

Happy for Sam Lake that he was able to finally make his dream sequel. Man basically did all he could to get Xbox to greenlight the game. Another one of Phil's missteps that he turned a blind eye.

That said, at least we get a bigger, better multiplatform release out of this.

I was talking about general sentiment, not you in particular.

The hate for game was quite strong.

I think the hate was more due to it being Epic exclusive which I agree, and its why I called them greedy cunts. Control suffered because of it. They are doing it again, and Alan Wake 2 will suffer as well.

I hope we get news during Summer Game Fest. There's quite a few horror related games I am looking forward to, but there hasn't been any news for a while. Namely, the Silent Hill franchise, Alone in the Dark, and others. I think we are also going to get news on The Last of Us online game too, hopefully.

Ohhh wow I remember Alan Wake 1!!!

It’s the one with a flashlight as a “weapon”, right?

I just played the “flashlight as a weapon” section of Little Nightmares II a few days ago.

Will Alan Wake 2 have other combat/weaponry?
