Games you expect Nintendo to save for ‘Switch 2’

Pretty much everything they haven't announced yet. TOTK will be the last big Nintendo release for the Switch.

At least that's what I hope. Enough already.

Like many have said mario kart will probably be saved for the next switch or possibly as a cross gen game. The new big mario. A new mario for the movie would have made sense but they can just push the old mario games. I'm actually looking forward to the zelda after breath of the wilds. Luigi's haunted mansion and smash bros. I'm curious what will be the new big ip from Nintendo Switch2. Arms kind of flopped this gen but splatoon was a success from last gen. So they pretty much did shooting and fighting so I could see a new style of racing game for Switch 2 or a card game.

Before anything else, it will absolutely launch with a new 3D Mario of some sort. I personally hope Odyssey 2 or a variant of that

It would be a hard thing to make MP4 next-gen only, because it was announced for Switch years ago. Metroid Prime 4 may be one of those cross-gen titles, except Metroid is not a big series in Japan and probably wouldn’t move units. Mario Kart 9 - realistically what are they bringing to the table that isn’t already in MK8 with dozens of characters and tracks?

Next Animal Crossing is probably their best bet.
I think Prime 4 will be better suited on a more powerful Switch since Metroid games are very atmospheric.

Plus making Prime 4 a launch title on the new Switch will bring more attention to the much deserved but desperate Metroid series.

Like I said, it comes down to the fact that Nintendo already said this was a Switch game. I don’t think they do that normally, see BOTW, even Twilight Princess, they made sure to get them out on the platform they said they would.

Metroid is like 35 years old at this point, it’s just never going to be a system seller the way their other franchises are, ever.

I suspect they’re even holding back a number of much requested remasters (from Zelda mainly).

I think they want to keep from satisfying everyone’s nostalgia needs on just one console.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the 3D Mario team has been working on something unannounced for six years.

Só I'm assuming the next Switch will probably launch with 3D Mario..

Think so. Can’t wait on that. And where’s a new 2D Mario. Really hope they change that one up.

I‘m still surprised TotK didn’t launch with the Switch 2. This means Nintendo’s next system will get a mainline Zelda game only very late in its life (considering TotK, a direct sequel, took them 6 years, it’s doubtful the next Zelda will come out before 2028 or 2029, maybe even later).

Which means next time something else has to carry the burden of being a launch title. Maybe that 3d Donkey Kong game that the Mario team has been rumored to be working on?

Mario Kart 9 as 8 deluxe was the best selling switch title by a long ways

Mario Kart 9? I'm expecting a complete edition of Mario Kart 8 with all the DLC and, if we're lucky, better visuals.

NEW

mario..

mario kart...

mario party...

zelda.....

supersmash...

same as we get every gen lol
Yeah, but what games do you think they will not make cross gen (even if Switch 1 can handle them) to encourage us to upgrade?

Will they hold back the Zelda WW and TP remasters so that upgrading is encouraged?

Some of you drive by posters need to read the OP before wasting your time stating the obvious.

I'm expecting a Donkey Kong platfomer, new Tomodachi Life and F Zero / Kid Icarus rematsers as the last Switch-focused projects to ship at the end of the year or amybe January

The starting next year Switch 2 will launch with Prime 4 as a cross gen title, followed by several other cross gen titles.

I’m expecting Mario Kart 9 to help them move units.

I also think Zelda Wind Waker and Twilight Princess remasters will be saved for Switch 2 so they have some must have Zelda content for it over the first years.

In addition, I’m thinking we will get Metroid Prime 2 & 3 on Switch, but 4 will be next gen only.

What games do you all expect them to strategically release only on Switch 2 (regardless of whether the Switch could or couldn’t handle them)?
Well a new 3d mario is a giving supposedly leaked picture from a year ago looks like obysessey 2 or was cut content from obysessey but yeah metroid prime 4 looking more and more next gen but hey they pulled pikmin 4 out of no where so who knows

Nah i reckon they will port over botw2 for launch, cost them peanuts while making gold off it though i think the remasters op referred to will come out on the 2nd year since nintendo love throwing zelda at us every 2 years

I personally expect more "Core" titles like Metroid Prime 4, F-Zer0, Astral Chain 2.

I expect casual and e-sport titles like Mario Kart 9, Switch Sports Resort, and possibly Wave Race or 1080 Snowboarding.

I expect more ports and remasters like Xenoblade Chronicles X, Punchout Wii, Luigi Mansion 1, Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes, and Paper Mario TTYD.

I expect Deluxe editions of games like Splatoon 3, Mario Rabbids Sparks of Hope, and Bayonetta 3.

Mostly though...Honestly with how long development takes now on AAA titles, I expect next gen to be the generation of "REMAKES & REMASTERS" that are held up with one or two new big titles annually. I actually think the next Smash will actually be a Remake of Melee with additional characters and features for the esport community.

Metroid Prime 4 imo is pretty clearly a Switch 2 game now. maybe even a launch title who knows?

Mario Kart 9, Smash Bros 6 and the next 3D Mario are a no brainer, because that's how Nintendo works, 1 title per generation for these games has always been the norm... with galaxy 2 breaking the mold a tiny bit, but that was originally a DLC so...

WW is my all time favorite gamr, but if Nintendo is saving WW and TP for the Switch 2 then I need them to be more than just ports. Give me the cut content from WW.

Who knows anymore…with all the delays for Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, I fully expected it to be the one that came with new hardware. I guess maybe Mario Odyssey 2 or something like a Super Mario Universe.

At this point I really hope they save Prime 4 for next generation. Not that it would be finished before that anyway.

Also, MK9, of course.

I think it will be full BC, basically a more powerful, 4K capable Switch. So they won't need to port BotW2 and won't need to port/rehash again all their Switch and VC games to the newer console.

I hope so but nintendo has given up on bc years ago, why bother when you can just resell everything my only wish for the switch is being able to carry over games from the switvh to switch 2 but nintendo is backwards and probably wont even do it

I think one of their Japanese representatives recently said that they were seriously considering BC for the future.

That's from November, so Yes and No? For all we know they might dump Nvidia and go with a custom AMD SoC like everyone else.

Nintendo should use all 2023 and part of 2024 to produce games exclusively for the new platform. I don't want to wait 2 years (or even more) like this gen on PS5 and XSX, to see something created with the new platform in mind.

Zelda TotK would appear as an old gen game on the new platform, I don't want old gen games.

This is the original source:
"Q5 You previously mentioned that you recognize that the issue in the game console business is that past software cannot be played due to hardware generation changes and that content is initialized. However, now, by utilizing the Nintendo Account and making new hardware backward-compatible, it seems that content can be transferred semi-permanently in the dedicated game console business, just as with video games. I think there are both advantages and disadvantages to making newly released hardware backward compatible with previous hardware."

"A5: Shigeru Miyamoto, Representative Director and Fellow.
We used to offer a system called "Virtual Console," which allowed people to play old software on new hardware. In comparison, video can be enjoyed for a long time as long as there is a playback environment. However, the rights for video are complicated, so Nintendo is proceeding with the project after ensuring that the rights are in place. Indeed, in the past, software development for game consoles was done in a dedicated development environment that differed for each hardware. Therefore, when the hardware changed, the development environment could not be taken over.
Therefore, software released on past hardware could not be played without modification.
Recently, however, the software development environment itself has gradually become more standardized, so it is generally easier to create a playback environment that allows software for past hardware to be played on new hardware than before. However, Nintendo's strength is in creating new games. With new hardware, we would like to propose unique games that cannot be realized on existing hardware."

He gets asked about BC, and replies saying that emulation is now easier and isn't that console-specific as it was before, meaning it's now easier to reuse it in different hardware (in the context of this question, pretty likely meaning multiple generations), and that now when they get the rights to re-release a game seems that they don't sign them for a single re-release but as something more generic that can be applied to multiple hardware (in the context of this question, pretty likely meaning multiple generations).

Meaning, if the emulation now makes it easy to put games on multiple hardware and they have the rights the games on multiple hardware, they won't need to focus that because the work will be already done. So instead of focusing on rehashing games from previous generations, now will be able to focus on new games. Which is what a dev prefers.

So I think he pretty much confirms that Switch 2 will be BC with Switch normal games and the VC games available on Switch. Earlier in February they also hinted BC:

I hope it happens i think alot of hardcore gamers would jump to a switch 2 like my self if it happens and slowly parents and casuals would jump on it after but me personally i have to much to play atm before even considering getting a switch 2, i think it all comes down to botw performance whether or not were close to 2nd switch

Depends how you see it. SS HD sold 3.6m copies from release in July to September of the same year.

You can safely say it’s over 4m now, could even be as high as 5m or 6m.

For a relatively easy port job selling at full price those aren’t numbers to sniff at.
I agree that's nothing to sniff at. I forget Switch sold so much that said sales numbers are more possible to achieve than usual.
Switch 2 is going to be so lackluster that maybe even some hardcore Nintendo Fanatics might finally be disappointed by it.
They already were with the Wii, Wii U and Switch.

Thing is you eventually have to buy the hardware to play the new games. This said, Switch sold way better than it would if it just sold to the Nintendo userbase. Nintendo userbase would hit N64/Gamecube numbers at best. I feel.
They'll probably release Mario Kart 9 on Switch 2, but with the lack of inspiration shown in the World Tour courses it won't even hit.
Aren't those courses just lifted from the mario kart android game thing plus retro tracks?

I'm sure they can still design some nice tracks, but yeah, I don't think they're even trying.

I’m thinking most of their upcoming heavy hitters will be exclusive to the next system. Doubt Mario Kart 9, for example, would be a cross-gen title.

The only game I can see being cross-gen for now is Metroid Prime 4 just because they promised it to current Switch owners. But even that feels uncertain. Who knows, maybe they’ll just make a ‘Switch 2’ version and release a cloud-version for the Switch.

I seriously thought they would with the new Zelda. So it will probably be a new Super Mario or Mario Kart.
Yea, further proof that this is a stop-gap Zelda, they rarely do true sequels to Zelda games, there's a reason people are saying this new Zelda game looks like DLC.

Alexios

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Doubt they're saving much that could be on Switch too, given how long a run that's managed to have it likely got/is getting/will get everything it could and then some, they're just likely to have geared up development of games that are intended for the next system to begin with some years now. So yeah, new smash, kart, mainline marios, zelda, splatoon and the like will obviously make a return in next system iterations at some point with Switch having little room/time for yet more of them. Hopefully they also don't forget some of the less successful stuff like ARMS alongside any new stuff.

Arms was like Nintendo Virtual On x Punch Out, so good. Plus the waifu.

They are taking the Ubisoft route, make 2-3 games with the same engine without much changes.
