I know the 4070ti got a lot of hate when it launched but got to play a few games last night on a 13700 KF 4070ti prebuilt from Best Buy that was an open box buy for $1800 and that rig was pretty damn nice for the price imo.

We played several games CP 2077, Forza Horizon 5 and some Hogwarts and a few others and that card runs damn close to my 3090 pc

I have been trying to hold off building a new 4090 PC but now really want to try gaming on that card
You don’t need a 4090 for a great gaming experience. PC has this mentality when it is far from it. Don’t fall for it lol

DLSS 3 is the whole suite of SuperResolution, Reflex and FrameGeneration.
Each of those technologies has its own version numbering.
SuperResolution and Reflex work on older GPUs.
FrameGeneration is software locked to Ada.

Total power consumption when paired with a 5800X3D for the 4070Ti is pocket change.
You could get away with a 550W PSU.

This won’t take into consideration transient spikes tho. I personally went with a 850w for my 7900xt. A bad/underpowered power supply is not recommended for a good card like a 4070ti.

I agree about a 4090 but a 4070 Ti is a really good card to get. If $800 is too much for you then probably best waiting for a 4060/4060 Ti if nvidia can price it right.

You are assuming the PSU cant handle those transient spikes....of which Ada especially the 4070Ti barely has.
The 4070Ti has some ~30W spikes....if your PSU cant handle a 20ms 30W spike, you should probably throw it away, cuz its hazard.

power-spikes.png

P.S
techpowerup couldnt even get the 4070Ti to spike in gaming.
They had to run Furmark to even record a spike in the GPU.

Depends where you go. Gamers Nexus reported the below:

Doom had it up to 400w transient.

Just to say though, this isn't how you should target a PSU power rating. Graphics cards can be prone to huge transient power spikes above the average, though Ada Lovelace is less bad in this regard than Ampere; also, peak efficiency is typically 40~60% of rated PSU power. It's best to target in that range for both of the above reasons.

650W is absolutely fine though for a 4070 Ti.

Edit: oops, I missed the above discussion

You might want to actually hear what they are saying.
Thats a 40 - 200μs spike.
If the high end is a 200μs spike to 400 watts and your PSU even detects that as a spike at all, throw it away.
Throw it away yesterday.

Hence why 550w psu with a 5800x3d and a 4070ti would not be ideal. Always leave lots of headroom on the psu side.

I wish i had a 550W PSU lying around just to disprove this.
Doesnt matter anyway, the poster has a 650W PSU already so this is neither here nor there.
But the fear mongering around transient spikes is super exaggerated ever since GN started talking about them.
A spike that short wouldnt even register on most PSUs of any repute, even a 550W PSU would spike and continue with life cuz it barely will have noticed it went out of spec.

How are the boot times on the new AM5 motherboards? My pc now boots in around 45 seconds and this is a 15 year Xeon X58 processor on an EVGA motherboard with a SATA SSD which I believe is bottlenecked to SATA 2.0. I've been planning on upgrading to the AM5 platform when the new X3D processors launch and getting a new NVME SSD. But I'm reading some people have boot times up to 10 minutes!???

That's absurd. I'd rather keep my 15 year old PC than deal with boot times that long.

How loud are the pumps on AIOs these days? I've only ever used air coolers. Is the pump speed usually adjustable?

Go for it man, it's an absolute beast piece of hardware. Never regret buying this, loving this beast destroying games at 4k120hz on my Beautiful Sony OLED.

I’ve been out of the GPU game too long. What do you people think the best GPU for $180-250 or so is? I don’t care about 4K or RT. I am debating between an RX6600 or Newegg has a 1660 Super for $189 or something.
I'd tell you go 6600 XT. They have an Asrock version on Newegg for $260 if you can stretch that extra $10 plus tax, of course. 60% more performance than a 1660 Super. If not, the RX6600 would also be a better choice as its 35% better in performance, too. Good luck with your choice and keep us posted on what you decide to go with.

if i got 6000 CL40 ram for Zen 4 would that be a problem?

there is 6600 cl30 ram but it's for XMP. could i get that and just run it at 6000-6400 and tighten the timings up if it doesn't run at 6600 cl30 on AMD?

i saw some g skill ram at 6000 cl30 but i don't know if my CPU cooler would fit over it.

i can't be arsed with messing about with RAM. i want something i can just plug in and enable XMP/EXPO and forget about it. Seriously considering sticking with Intel but the cooling issues are putting me off and it's overall more expensive and i'd need a brand new cooler.

AMD is cheaper and I can use my current cooler but the RAM confusing me. I know the difference in RAM is not huge like maybe 10fps at best. should i just go with the 6000 CL40?

That type of speed with good timings should run you less than 160USD for 2x16gb.
I bought the Trident Z5 Neo RGB 6000mhz with almost identical timings (32 38 38 96)

Any word yet on that amd am5 promo for cpu + mobo + ram? Should be available from today. I hope AMD wont pass on europe with this, i might be tempted if this is a decent deal. Missed oppotunity to include a gpu with some discount as well if you ask me.

AM5 does a long memory training the first time you turn on the PC, which can take several minutes. After that it does a fast training on every boot. My PC, Ryzen 7600 + asus tuf gaming X670E takes 40s to boot. But you can bypass this training completely by changing some settings on the mobo bios, which will reduce the boot to ~20s.

Depends on the motherbaord maker, but also on other things like how many devices are being initialized, memory training, how the UEFI is configured, especially the fast boot option.

Changed my mind again, I think.

Seems like a lot of people are still having issues with these new AMD boards. Twice I've tried building an AMD system and had issues and what I experienced is still happening to others. Issues with RAM, booting/restarts, and random crashes. I really can't deal with that headache again and I'd be a fool to try a third time. So I'm thinking about sticking with Intel BUT it seems they have issues too! :messenger_unamused:

For starters, the CPU mount doesn't hold it properly so you almost need to buy a contact frame. It's about £15 so it's not about the cost but I shouldn't need to do that. Also, you have to screw it a certain way or it could causing booting issues lol. AND these CPUs run HOT and suck insane power. There is no way I'm buying an AIO cooler. It's not happening. I'm willing to buy a Noctua NH-D15 air cooler but it looks like that can't even keep the CPUs in check. I'm wanting a 13900K or 13900KS.

So far the pros and cons:

AMD

pros: cheaper, i can keep my current cooler as i have an AM4 mount. offer good gaming performance. uses less power and runs cooler.
cons: difficult finding fast RAM at 64GB. lots of bugs and instability

Intel

pros: best gaming performance (so far) and seems more stable
cons: more expensive, hotter, and uses more power. need a contact frame and possibly an AIO. at the very least I need to buy a new air cooler or a new mount for my existing one.

I'm thinking about just giving up my search for a new CPU for now. Might be best to give AM5 more time to mature or hope that Intel fixes the mounting issue and (don't laugh) release a CPU that doesn't run as hot. I don't know what to do.

I believe the settings you want to adjust to improve boot times is called Memory Context Restore. I guess each BIOS will have a different name but it's something like that you want to toggle.

Saw it mentioned by some posts online as I was research about motherboards.

Yes, that's the setting. I just couldn't remember it when I wrote my post.

I think I’m ready to upgrade my i7 9700k. Is the i5-13600K still the best bang for buck? I’m a big gamer.

Please commend good memory brand 32GB) and MB

13600K is a great CPU.

Are you getting DDR4 or DDR5?

You could re-use DDR4 from your previous build.

Do you have any preference for Motherboard brand? Will you be overclocking the CPU or RAM?

No overclocking the ram. Maybe cpu down the road. Shouldn’t I get a DDR 5 motherboard? Unless they make one that supports ddr5 and 4? No real preference on MB

Off to place my order tomorrow for a new PC to join you 4090 snobs as I waited for those AMD X3D reviews to drop before deciding on a CPU and looks like sticking with Intel as I just prefer them
Do you ever stop buying new pcs? What do you do with your old ones?

I am personally getting FOMO on a 4090, but I'm holding out. I have a pc with 3090 and one with a 3080 and 2 laptops with 3070ti. I have way too much crap. I'm not a big "sell your old stuff" type of guy. I'm the "hoard it until it has no value" type of guy. I seriously need to sell the 1 laptop though. And probably 1 of those pcs.

I donate them to my wife’s old High School‘s PC Lab

Bought them several 3080 based systems recently but they could always use more

For those that haven't seen it Amazon has been selling the 5800x3d for $323 plus they often put up a $14 off coupon.(I'm very tempted to upgrade from a 3800xt but haven't pulled the trigger.)

Curious what CPU you have pushing it?
12700K.

I've upgraded my whole rig in early 2022 but kept the GTX 1060 due to the messy situation with the GPUs. The prices are still ridiculous mind you but seeing that the RTX 4060 will probably be pretty gimped, I decided to bite the bullet and go for the 4070 Ti.

You won't regret that upgrade at all. Currently have a 5800X3D paired with a 6800 XT. Like butter, baby.

If you're near a Microcenter, they're selling them for $299

I really want to do a sff build. It's pretty amazing what can be squeezed in those cases. Also, the xproto builds look insane!

Yes, I just read that a lot of people are having issues with the latest bios. I think I will just skip it.
