Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser has said the company expects The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to justify its $70 price tag.

The company announced last month that the upcoming game costs $69.99, marking the first time it has charged more than $59.99 for a standard edition of a digital Switch title.

In a recent interview, Nintendo’s US boss was asked how the platform holder reached its decision to price Tears of the Kingdom at $70:

We look at what the game has to offer,” Bowser told Associated Press.

After the game’s price was announced, a Nintendo spokesperson suggested $70 won’t necessarily be the new norm for first-party Switch software, stating that the company determines the suggested retail price of its products “on a case-by-case basis”.

This isn’t a price point that we’ll necessarily have on all our titles. It’s actually a fairly common pricing model either here or in Europe or other parts of the world, where the pricing may vary depending on the game itself.”
Colour me excited.

Possibly.
Name these indies that are superior to BOTW in production values, game design, freedom, physics, scope, variety, detail and length. Yes, all of those aspects at the same time, since BOTW has it all. Nothing less is required to sustain your argument.
Now its suddenly about production value? I thought it was about "gameplay".
Freedom, Scope and Detail you mean wondering around in a large empty map?
Length you mean the fact that the game could be beaten within 10 hours if the player decide to?
Variety you mean the same boss fight, same shrine? No dungeon?
The only thing this game has it going might be the physics, but I didn't pay full price just to play a sandbox physic simulator, Its not a Zelda game.
Its combat is repetitive, weapon durability copy pasted from Dead Rising making it even less reason to engage in combat.

Link's Awakening is still the better Zelda game

If I want a sandbox game I would rather play Terraria which released in 2011

Breath of the Wild was originally supposed to be a Wii U exclusive game. The only reason it released on Wii U and Nintendo Switch at the same time was that it was delayed from its expected release date of 2015 (which was before the Switch was released) until 2017 (after the Switch was released). This wasn't a pro-gamer move. They had already developed the game for the Wii U so it wouldn't make sense to not release it there. They also released it on the Switch because failure to do so would have lost a ton of sales from those who had moved (or were moving) to the new console.

Additionally, just to show you how pro-money they were, if you bought the game digitally you only owned the game for that specific console. Meaning that if you bought Breath of the Wild for Wii U you could not download it on your Switch, and vice versa. Nintendo has, for a long time, shunned any sort of backwards compatibility in favor of re-releasing a game on a newer console and charging you for it again (even if it was the same game and not, for example, a remaster, as was the case with the Wii U version and the Switch version of Breath of the Wild).
I agree - it's all true. But IMO they could avoid WiiU in 2017 for sure, it was long time dead by that time. I see that release as a dedication for fans and owners of Nintendo console - they have released the game for WiiU just you to know that they care for those who bought (a dead) console. I bet there was no good profit for such small installed base as WiiU had.
So you like the game and devs and not agree on publishing and price? I mean it's easy to mixup developers and publishers.

it wouldn’t be such a big problem if it weren’t for the fact Nintendo NEVER cuts their prices and the games almost never see sales below 33% off 😑

everyone gripes about Sony and other publishers having raised their prices but at least they (usually) eventually lower the MSRP and at the very least end up having 50+% off sales

edit: I’m talking about digitally mind you

The game was originally developed for Wii U. To not release it on the Wii U would have been throwing away all of the time and development that they had put into the game. That would be throwing away money for no reason.

I don't have a problem with the games or the developers. I'm not even saying that I have a problem with the price. I'm saying that the executives saying that the game "justifies" the price is false. The executives didn't increase the price for this game because it has so much content that makes the $70 a foregone conclusion. They increased the price because Microsoft and Sony increased their prices, and Nintendo has never been a company to turn down money. They are simply keeping their prices in line with the other companies in the industry.

then go play Terraria. I don’t understand this we get it people have preferences.

No one shits on any other company for being preferred but if someone prefers Nintendo they are somehow a mindless fanatic.

I have no problem with people having their preference, but I also have my preference, and I don't agree with the price tag.

Ffs I think I'm about to buy a Switch, I haven't had a nintendo console since the N64. I know it's probably a bad time to buy one with a new console probably coming out soon but I'm getting fomo with this game.

I haven't played breath of the wild, any other games that are must play? I was thinking luigis mansion 3 and pokemon arceus, or are they no bueno?

This is what I did. Turned out I had over £4 in points so it came to £80 for two vouchers. Pre ordered TOTK...Noice!

Hopefully advance wars turns out amazing with a great online mode and I might get that, if not Ill just hold out until something else comes along.
Yeah I’m getting TotK and Pikmin 4. It’s ridiculous value (especially if you have points saved towards it) considering the price of new PS5 first party games.

At least other Corpos made excuses of greater graphical fidelity requiring more work for jacking up prices... Meanwhile at Nintendo.
Is high tech tech graphics that make worth full price for you guys? I felt ripped off with games like Horizon and Order 1886, it doesn matter how they waste money on high tech graphics, it didn't made games any better for me.

The excuse is that current gen games require more work. That's why the bump.

Switch game pricing should be scaled to their performance in handheld mode! 😉

The way I see it if games is fun and I want to play it then I will gladly pay full price, doesn't matter how expensive the graphics are.

I payed full price for Octopath 2 with pixel visuals and it was worth every penny because its super fun.

Not sure I trust Bowser when it comes to Nintendo games, might as well wait and hear what Ganon has to say.
Ganondorf is the King we deserve. Link is naught more then a Hylian Savage expertly manipulated by Hylian Royalty to smear my Lord's good name.

I hope they justify paying 70 Korok Seeds with a playable Zelda. Or better yet a bonus mode with playable Ganon and you get to wreck the countryside on a whim.

Games like CP and Forspoken aren't going to sustain their MSRP because of bad reviews from both reviewers and gamers. Gamers won't pay full price for a bad game but will pay full price for a good game, and that's the main reason why BOTW is still at $60 even after more than 6 years on the market.

TOTK deserved a $70 price point for being the sequel to the highest-rated game in this generation.
both those games have issues but to say they're bad? yall gotta wake up and get off MC.

Oh I would gladly pay $70 for Zelda, hell I paid $80 for OOT back in the day 😂. I mean I’ve paid $70 for some ps5 and Xbox games that are no where near as good.
Ah yes. I got OoT for 80 bucks as well back in the day. Went to KB Toys(I believe that's what it was) at the local mall when it opened, and by the time I made the purchase and left, a line started to form.

I preordered the LE gold cart from kb toys myself. 😎

I’ve never been big on retro collecting but I’ve thought once or twice about getting all the Zelda carts.

This. A great game is worth full price, and in this day and age, full price for a AAA game is 70 USD.

BotW was *the* best open world I had ever played... until Elden Ring came out. Even if ToTW is only slightly better than BotW, it is still better than 99% of the games on the market.

Day 1 for me. I was pleasantly surprised with BotW and put over 100 hours into that sucker, with of course the first 20-30 being the best the game had to offer because it was a new experience. Daughter really loved it. We'll be getting TotK on day 1 for sure, 70 is fine. I don't understand the whining about fidelity, BotW looks great to me all things considered. I'm hoping TotK runs even better since it's not tethered to the WiiU foundationally. Since engine/etc are all done, all that time is focusing on refinements, new concepts, etc so IMO it should be a blast, Majora's Mask style.

Well somebody needs to get paid to hide 200 koroko seeds
200? The original had 900. And based off the fact that collecting Korok poop was obviously the main selling point of BOTW, and on the assumption that this game is more than 10 times better than BOTW; it would therefore mean that there are over 9000 Korok poops…’Maracas of (poopy) Time’ here we come. 💩

I'll pay it, begrudgingly. But the Switch is so long in the tooth that to start charging $70 for new games seems rather absurd. Especially given Nintendo's reluctance to ever give a significant discount.

They're charging $70 because they know they'll get it, precedence be damned. It's very cynical.

The moment they decide to release the game on an outdated hardware, I'm out, I was expecting they would release the new Zelda on Switch successor. I'm not paying 70$ for low budget games, even indie games look better than this.

But if there is market, its always justifiable as long as fans keep paying it.
Don't worry, Switch was already outdated the day it came out.

The Nintendo Switch is the only time I've regretted going all digital. I would really like to trade it and the games in.
Me too buddy. First I was all physical, but I hated carrying around all the games so I sold every physical copy and went digital. Biggest regret I had in recent times. Switch games still sell for lots of money and I bet sooner or later Nintendo will close the switch servers too.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
anyone surprise?

just imagine you are the Nintendo CEO.

Nintendo fans does not give a shit about poor performance on switch.
Nintendo fans does not give a shit about outdated networking function/multiplayer function on switch.
Switch console still sells everywhere as todate.

The vast majority is still going to buy the games, and the loud minority who opposed the 70 dollars is still going to buy the games as well.

Why wont you raise the price to 70 dollars? Its money making opportunity.

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
I don't understand why they havent gone in depth with this game. Comes out in two months. The marketing has been tepid. Is this new tactic of saving everything until the last minute coming from the new president? First Prime Remaster and now this..
