Frank O'Connor Appears to Have Left 343 Industries

Threads like these always give me a good chuckle. Some major tragedy befalls a beloved first party studio like 343, the Sony fanboys are rejoicing and the Xbox supporters are weeping in the streets. Hahaha!

Its good news for Halo. It needs a change . Imagine what id software could do with this IP.

Give Halo to The Coalition. Use UE5 with Lumen and Nanite. Bring in a competent writer to craft the future story. Preferably a novelist that has written Halo fiction that was well received before.

Won’t be a Halo thread without the truly bad advice. Yikes

Id and Coalition have their hands full making their own IP. Smart play is to overhaul 343i management, end the practice of using temp contractors, switch to UE5 (already in progress) and focus on the essentials.

There were multiple instances, not going to bother capping them all from Resetera but they kept giving him a pass because he was an "Industry name" until the dam broke. He got a weak #metoo moment as well. I know what you mean, he's got the look.

Many “Whelps”! Handle It!
As someone who missed the glory days and tried to get into it late (I.E. the 343i days), I just assume the sooner they get rid of all of the leadership from the past decade the better.

I also remember this guy's posts from Ree when we used to make fun of them, and he neither struck me as intelligent nor creative. Quite the opposite.

At this point they should completely close this studio, abandon HALO (let's face is - it's dead and not worth saving) and let people work on other projects in other studios.

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
The pressure is on Microsoft and halo, Infinite was ready to go and deserved better scores.

Correct me if I’m wrong, Luke Smith went from being a game journalist at 1UP and the Xbox and Halo fanboy who made 1UP Show/Yours awesome, then he became community manager at Bungie and then design lead for Destiny and creative director for Destiny 2.

Explain why I love destiny 1 a lot more.

Good,

He's responsible for killing Halo
Him, Bonnie, and Kiki. The Three Halo Stooges.
That the bald guy who always had really questionable ideas about the franchise?

If so, then:

Yes. He's said tons of dumb shit, including equating the franchise to porn and basically insinuating people were just too stupid to understand Halo 5's brilliant writing.

I could also make a list of the outright lies he's told over the years but It'd probably take me days.

Dude's a clown.

I remember reading his articles in Official Xbox Magazine, back when the original Xbox launched. He's had quite a career, moving from that position all the way to creative director at 343. I didn't pay much attention to the 343 stuff, but from what I'm reading, he sounds like an example of that old adage about how people get promoted to their level of incompetence.

This. thats basically the story of 343 management: a bunch of people who were managing the halo comic/toys licensing issue during Bungie tenure that were suddenly promoted to videogame AAA development. It’s a miracle they didn’t totally fumble it.

He's honestly the main reason in my book. He completely anhilated the LORE Bungie has carefully build for Halo 1-3, ODST and Reach.

Microsoft Studios management became really bad;strange after Phil took over so i dont blame Bonni and Kiki as much.

Slowly the awful management is leaving, they know they arnt the best for halo. Won’t be missed, frankly.

343 needs new talent, take halo in a direction that is new and cutting edge.

I have no idea how he went from being the blog writer for the halo website to being in charge of the whole narrative of the franchise.
This should have happened a long time ago.

The people that don't keep tabs on Halo: what's happening in 343?

The people that keep tabs on Halo: Yes Bonnie, Kiki and Frank are gone!!!

It's the ladder people. It's good he's gone. He's one of the reasons Halo is were it's at.

Fuck those fans, they only want halo 2 and 3. 343 can remake 3 to make them happy.

Halo should go a totally new direction, maybe even try the third person.
We have two similar cases: Resident Evil 4 and the God of War Soft Reboot. In both cases, the original people involved were key to reinventing each franchise.

It's very interesting how both reinventions managed to maintain something essential from the originals.

To replicate the success of RE 4 and the GoW, the new person in charge of Halo must possess a deep understanding of the franchise's essence. Only then will they be able to achieve a reinvention that maintains what makes Halo unique and captivating, while also pushing the series forward.

which seems counterintuitive based in the people who have been working on halo since Bungie.

but i think this franchise needs to go dormant for like a decade anyway.

What happend to Luke Smith. Biggest halo fanboy ever went and worked with Bungie back in 2007.

The media gave the game more initial praise than it deserved. A fanbase rallied around the only game that stood a chance to give the new console early momentum after an entire generation damaged the brand. Forza is great, but Xbox needed Halo and it didn't deliver. 343, once again, failed.

Not that I doubt you, but I'm curious what he was saying. There was always something about him that rubbed me the wrong way but I couldn't put my finger on it.
If my memory serves me right, on occasion he would insert his 2 cents on politics when it came the gaming industry and come off as a privileged racist narcissistic pig. Honestly, I'd have to go and dig in his old posts. But I rather not waste time. Basically in a nutshell, he was too busy making political posts and arguing instead of making a good game.
