Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 - MGS1 Port Takes 10~ Seconds to "Pause" Game

This needs to be in the OP. You could not pause in the original game. I can hardly blame anyone for some technical difficulties when adding new features, considering how old the game is.

I've skimmed through the rest of the video and it seems...fine? Seems like a faithful conversion of the original MGS.

Indeed.

>added long requested cutscene pause feature, albeit in a flawed way
>"terrible conversion"

Yeah, looks like an emulation so I'd assume that the "in-game" pause runs within the emulation, but the "system pause" screen is a layer above and might be creating a save-state before entering that mode.
My guess too. They're doing a whole save-state but even then it seems too slow. Shouldn't be more than 10MB should it?

I know that a lot of people does'nt have a PC, but Duckstation can run this game WAY better than that and it's free of charge. It's just a shame that Konami made a low-effort port like that, not even added modern anti-aliasing into it.

What a damn shame, MGS is one of my favorite video game series ever created. If the rest of the ports run smoothly I'll probably still buy it but will feel dirty while doing so.
i have a preorder on psn hoping the master books are cool

which specific place are you talking about? I see the player pause on accident and it only takes a sec.

On accident…

Man, following this game has been an emotional rollercoaster.

The first five Metal Gear systems are given modern ports with physical releases: :D
They're only at 720p and 30 fps: :(
They run at 60 fps and 1080p on PS5: :D
They run worse than ever: :(

I'm sure this is something that could be fixed with a post release patch, but now I'm less optimistic about volume 2 containing MGS 4

Feels like they'd have been better off just using the existing PS1 emulation for PS4/5 on said systems.

Different function. That's the original pause mechanic.

The cutscene pause screen is not part of the actual game so I don't think its a big problem.
This all these weirdos are fing drama queens. "Oh my pearls and girls, no pausing during mgs1s cutscene , I was going to get this too. That's it canceled order..."... Lol

People are so quick to pass judgment without a full testing or review. Especially for something as dumb as that. If you want to pause to use the bathroom during a cutscene chances are you can wait 10 seconds. If you are that much of a Gen z instant gratification junkie, than you have bigger issues. It's 10 seconds for for a niche case in a game that never got ported from ps1...

I’ll probably buy it on steam just to have it for archival purposes but damn that’s rough. I’ll just continue to play it on emulators more than likely.
This is neither here nor there but I think you should reconsider your approach to Steam as an "Archive" it's a digital storefront and while it does seem too big to fail, it doesn't mean it will always be there in the way a proper "Archive" would.

I'd consider a GOG version more of an "Archived" version but even that Storefront could go away someday, at least the executable doesn't need to check in and could be shared for years to come.

Just food for thought.

It's more the fact that I can legitimately play PS3 era stuff that got a steam release like FFXIII whereas I can’t on my PS5: and of course with steam deck emulation is a snap too and I’m not above that.

What you can totally see he meant to hit the codec button but paused it for a sec in the time stamp I posted..😵‍💫
I can't be sure, but I think he was taking the piss out of your grammar, as the correct English is "by accident".

Seriously, with this level of graphics improvement achievable on Duckstation :

Yet PC gamers still want to give money to Konami? 🤷‍♂️

The only thing I'm interested in is how the PC ports will be, with or without fan patches/mods. That's going to be the real long term investment here.

Wasn't it widely assumed/understood that there ports would be bad from the resolution announcements etc? No one was under the impression that the games were dug out of their source code and meticulously worked upon to create wonderfully fresh 4K ports, they were always going to be low effort affairs to expect little of.

Well most people don't rip the isos and think it's legal downloading a rom. This collection is a legal way to consume the games on pc and modern consoles.

I can't imagine any MGS1 fan not owning at least one legal version of it across the console generations.

I myself have 4: The PS1 release, the PS2 version (MGS Essential Collection), the PS3/PSP digital version, and most recently the PlayStation Classic version.

So no, not giving more money to Konami if they can't be bothered to put in the effort.

And no, I have no ethical qualms about ripping my game discs to ISOs.

And BTW this is MGS2 running on PCSX2 at 4K60:

If you ripping your own disc than everything is totally legal well besides you have to rip your own bios for most emulators.

I paid 50 euro for like 6 games. I expected ports for that kinda money and seems like I get exactly that.

I agree it's weird that mgs 2 and 3 didn't get a higher resolution but besides that this offer is totally fine.

I am fully expecting this to be a shot port, but this is an absolute non-issue. People are claiming this is literally unplayable because… it doesn’t have instantaneous pausing during cut-scenes? And this makes it worse than the GTA remaster? What the fuck are you people talking about?

None of this is helped by adamsapple adamsapple ‘s click-bait drama post title, of course, but ffs - this is not the hill to die on. And people here complain about game devs having “agendas”…

Damn after all these years and the intro of MGS2 still gives me shivers. MGS 1-3 are the pinnacle of Kojima's work.
