Opinion: Xbox Should Consider Cancelling Halo: Campaign Evolved For PS5.

Look, there's been a lot of news, reactions and opinions about the new Xbox regime and where they should pivot to next. Indeed, there are lots of directions that Asha Sharma and her team could take over the next few years regarding hardware, software, general platform strategy and more. I can't pretend that I have all the answers for that, but one more pressing topic has been on my mind over the last few days. Maybe Xbox should consider keeping Halo as its flagship exclusive, like it always has been.

To be clear, this isn't coming out of nowhere. Sharma herself has hinted that she "hears" fans regarding platform identity bringing back Xbox exclusives - and while that certainly doesn't mean the team is going to act on that response, it at least shows that even Microsoft's multiplatform strategy of recent years is being questioned by the new Xbox boss. Sharma clearly wants to get hardcore fans on side here.

And, all I'm suggesting is that maybe, just maybe, Team Green should consider cancelling the PS5 version of Halo: Campaign Evolved. Yes, Forza has made it over to the rival Sony platform with the Horizon 5 port — and plans for Horizon 6 as well — and yes, Gears moved over with the Gears of War: Reloaded remaster last year, but this is Halo. Halo defined Xbox for years, Halo is Xbox for many, and while the series isn't what it once was, it's still the platform mascot in a lot of ways. Master Chief is a huge part of Xbox's identity; an identity that the new boss needs to get a grasp on.

I must admit that even as I type this, I think it's extremely unlikely that Campaign Evolved gets cancelled for PS5. It's out there in the public domain, work has likely begun on the port, and heck, Sony was even caught advertising the thing last year in what felt like something of an alternate reality. But, this is Xbox's long-term legacy we're talking about here, this is the future of its most iconic franchise. It feels a bit like if Campaign Evolved goes over to PS5 you're giving up some of that legacy.

Of course, one other option would be to let the Halo remake exist on PS5 but then keep the next mainline title exclusive to Xbox, and presumably PC. That's certainly one way to go, but doing that would seem entirely against the point of the franchise moving multiplatform in the first place. Halo Studios said it wanted to expand the community by going to PS5, but Campaign Evolved only contains the story mode - and the next entry will likely contain multiplayer as well. You'd think that putting the next mainline game on PS5 to expand the player base would make more sense in some way, especially with how iconic Combat Evolved is and its ties to the original Xbox.

Ultimately, I have no idea if this is even a possibility at Xbox HQ right now, especially because the game has been revealed for PS5 systems already. But, I just think that with all the uncertainty surrounding the future — and indeed the "return" — of Xbox, the team should consider not letting the cat get out of the bag for now in regards to its most iconic franchise of all. Unless anything changes, Halo: Campaign Evolved will mark a massive turning point for Xbox and its new multiplatform path later this year, but we'll see what happens between now and the game's upcoming release. I'm not even sure Microsoft knows that itself right now.

The multiplatform genie is out of the bottle. No going back now.

They should.. but they wont...

Things I expect to hear from MS and Xbox this year.

- Next Gen console Canceled
- A few smaller devs outright closed.
- Rumors of them wanting to sell off some IPs and studios. ( that come true in the following years)
- They will keep COD though.

They can't without seriously scaling back Game Pass and trying to train their users to buy games again. Remember that Nadella wants the division to be profitable.

Dumb opinion. Didn't every1 agree multiplayer games should be multiplatform?

The remake is simply setting the stage for the multiplayer to come.

Conveniently they only started loving them after the rumors of PlayStation pulling back from PC ports happened lol. They big mad over that one lol

It was literally all they had. Especially now that they don't have "the most powerful console ever" either.
Xbox peeps wouldn't even join some of the podcasts I listen to after that news. haha

Tell me Sharma, are those concerned Xbox fans in the room with us right now?

Make the PS5 version run at 720p and 30FPS and XBox version at 8K and 120FPS. People will buy more Xboxes

It's a remake /remaster of a very old game. Smart business would be multi platform this and then make a new halo a launch title for the next Xbox.

Won't happen, but yeah

It's pretty well established there is no console in the traditional sense, next Xbox is a platform of Windows "Steam Machines"--PCs with a console skinned front end, probably multiple SKUs, price points, and performance tiers. Like the various ROG Allies and MSI Claw portables, though they will have a much more unified console like interface. MS's console will just be a first party flagship reference device.

When will people understand that these companies just want to make money? Gaming is an absolutely massive business at this point and first parties will want to make as much money as possible on AAA products that now cost upwards of hundreds of millions to create.

Releasing a product on one platform where (I imagine) a huge percentage of those players will be playing on Game Pass isn't making them anymore money than they had before. Releasing on as many platforms as possible gives them a much better chance of making a profit.

Nintendo is an outlier in this respect and I would be interested to know what their games cost to produce.

There are a lot of dashes in that article, just saying.

I kee psaying that the point of these things is the platform. The problem for Microsoft is that their platform is in shambles. i agree that an exclusive Halo should be a way to build it up - it's worked before. But they've already trained customers they will get their game on day one on Steam and they can play it for 12 cents or whatever Game Pass is. They've purposely devalued their own operations. So they're kind of stuck. My whole point is that Sony would be very stupid to do this or even do anything that might lead to doing it.

They waved the white flag already. They might call their next piece of hardware a console but it will be a pc. Or so it seems.

Just occurred to me maybe they could make another "S" digital only console while also releasing the xbox pc for the high end customers which may or may not be made by OEMs. But that just popped into my head.

When the new CEO of Xbox says we will still be doing hardware or even if she says we're going to still make a console I don't think that necessarily equates to a console at all. Because to her I think a pc console would mean the same thing.

The platform is in shambles- i think its too late and the damage has been done.
If they did reverse course and go back down the traditional path- it should be with a new traditional console. I don't see any of that happening.

Exclusives matter- despite however the losing console holder wishes to spin it.
