If I can choose only one huge RPG to play...

It's reaching such comical levels that we may as well have a thread dedicated to shitting on Skyrim going forward.

Hmm there are plenty who blindly love the game aswell, are you saying you only want to see one side of that discussion ?

Thats comical.

I find it amusing that its gotten to the point now where nearly every goddamn thread where Skyrim is so much as mentioned in the same sentence as any other RPG, people feel the over-whelming urge to sweep in, derail the thread, and remind all of us how buggy, unfinished and "hand-holdy" it is.

It's reaching such comical levels that we may as well have a thread dedicated to shitting on Skyrim going forward.

1) Skyrim is buggy.
2) OP wants to know which to play. There are negative aspects to Skyrim s/he should know about.
3) What's actually comical is how you feel it's not appropriate to point out the problems with Skyrim in a thread asking about Skyrim. God forbid people "derail the thread" by discussing the issues of the game. It's "amusing" that you feel opinions that aren't "SKYRIM IS THE SECOND COMING OF JESUS" has no place in a thread that's essentially asking people to discuss the pros and cons of Skyrim in relation to another game.

Haven't played Skyrim yet, I'm sure its good, but I'm more prone to jRPG's. With my 95hours with Xenoblade, I highly recommend that. Good story, great characters, and the music is killer.

Bull fucking shit! A pure mage is infinitely better realized in Skyrim by any metric. The stealth gameplay is stellar and 1000x better than Splinter Cell Conviction. Even the melee sword and board combat is more engaging if you actually perk up on some shield bashing. On any objective scale, you're full of it.
Thanks for stating this clearly so I didn't have to.

Maps are pretty much as big in both games, BUT Xenoblade's areas are much more beautiful, filled with secret areas, monsters, etc. whereas Skyrim's exploration is more and more of the same...
Maybe I just have a very mechanics-oriented view toward this, but I find exploring in Skyrim far more rewarding. It comes down to interactivity: the ways you interact with the world (outside towns) in Xenoblade boil down to (i) killing monsters and (ii) picking up randomly spawning loot. In Skyrim, I could find new puzzles, some story background, a hidden quest or some interesting NPC.
Xenoblade has beautiful and varied environment design, but what you actually do in those environments stays the same for dozens of hours.

Really? I agree the art design is phenomenal and the world building is awesome but the story is among the weakest in rpgs I've played in years. It's a really good game though.

And to the topic. Both eventually if you like rpgs since they're both really good games, but Skyrim might be worth waiting for patches/mods.

I love Skyrim's story. I've only done a bit of the main quest, but I find it horribly compelling. I finished the Companions quests and while it was way too short ('wait, that's it, I'm the leader already'?) it was one of the better questlines I've played in the entire series. I'm halfway through the DB and it's not as great as Oblivions, but still pretty great.

I enjoy most, however, their presentation of the story. With the exception of the Gears of War Nords and the Barry Weiss from Storage Wars Bretons oh and the fucking kid from the 90s sitcoms doing the bard voices, the voice acting is among the BEST in modern RPGs period. That and the improvement on the material has made it the most immersive, enjoyable experiences in RPGs...only RPGs in the last 10 years that match Skyrim were the Witcher 1 and ME2.

Actually played a sword and shield character with 100 sneak, tyvm. On Master if that ever mattered.

It's Oblivion combat. Only real improvement is that using a shield feels more "interactive" and that the throat-slit animation triggered by one-hit kills on humans makes stealth gameplay more engaging, somewhat. Otherwise you're still hacking away immovable stumps of healthbars which you can stun with bashes . . . amazing combat, bro.

Fuck, I loved Skyrim, I'm just pointing out that the combat is shit.

So, I've finished Xenoblade long ago (ended up being my choice back when this thread was going) and it became my favorite JRPG ever. That game is truly amazing.

Turns out I kinda forgot about Skyrim. Then I got it because of a Steam sale. I'm about 8 hours in and I'm loving it! Much better than Oblivion. I'm also quite surprised at how well optimized it is. At least as far as crappy rigs go, because the game runs smooth on my humble GT 525m.

I doubt I will end up liking it more than Xenoblade (who knows though, still a lot to do), but it's a fine game indeed. I'm just happy to enter a huge, epic world again.

Yeah huge bump, I know, but it's still a valid discussion. :p

Xenoblade... without a doubt. The sheer level of detail they manage to fit in a Wii game is just astounding. I never could appreciate many WRPG's.

This will last you about 100 hours.

Well, I guess the OP already made his mind up, but for any other undecided readers, do what I did and:

1. See Xenoblade, get excited. Want it.
2. Read that Xenoblade isn't coming to US. Say to self, "Fuck it." Get Skyrim.
3. Spend ~50 hours in Skyrim exploiting easy levels, get best armor, swords, etc.
4. Get bored of Skyrim. Never finish it (or even come close to finishing main quest).
5. Download Dolphin. Get legitimate copy of Xenoblade. Patch it, apply hi-res textures, play it on PC in glorious 1080.
6. ?
7. Profit!

Any Elder Scrolls game. While the gameplay sucks they are immersive. And gigs of mods really can make the games much more fun.

Depends what you like I guess...

Post Apocalypse:
Fallout 3 & Fallout: New Vegas

Medival:
Demon Souls & Dark Souls
Dragon Age: Origins (hum ok I'm maybe off with this one...)
Skyrim (I'm adding this one even though I didn't like it (I think it's way over rated)... but still think you should give it a try if you don't want to die stupid. Oh and check all the mods to make it enjoyable visually)

Science Fiction:
Xenoblade

JRPG:
Dragon Quest 8 (with PCSX2 it's magic graphically^^)

Are some that come to mind when talking of "huge world".

Quoted so people can realize that there's no point in choosing a game for the OP anymore.

Also,
Please. Combat is just as silly as ever.

Although I do like the game a bit more now, I still don't understand the complete gushing over Skyrim. I've played like 35~ hours now, and finding new places to delve is cool. Finding that yet another cave/dungeon is full of draugers is not. Final room? Draguers busting out of coffins. Every time.
This is so damn true :lol

Coming from someone who mainly plays WRPGs, play Xenoblade.

Skyrim is beyond disappointing since it has most of the same problems Oblivion had. Everything about the actual RPG mechanics in the game are dreadful. It is a good world to walk around in, the game that you play in it is the bad part.

I'm stealing the first post from a thread where someone was asking if he should play Dark Souls or Skyrim.

"Do you want to play an amazing game or Skyrim?"

Edit: didn't notice when question was asked. Oups. Good choice, OP!

This was the first post too, right? Nailed it.

I put like 30 hours into Skyrim. That says something about the game, to hook me for that long. But I didn't beat Skyrim, because I ultimately got bored with it. The notion of exploring a massive land, and all the nooks and crannies within it, is very alluring. At the end of the day though there's just too much "go into that cave, fight to the end, and kill/get something". The combat is still pretty boring too, and fighting dragons is a lot less exciting than it should be.

Xenoblade is my choice between the two. I haven't beaten it yet, either, but I intend to. I've enjoyed the story so far (about 20 hours in), and the combat is really good too. Though I will say that the screen can feel pretty cluttered during more intense battles, and I feel like I'm not getting all of the information I should be getting. It's still a lot of fun though, and I plan to finish it sometime before "X" comes out.

I also have to agree with the people who said to play Dark Souls, although I think of that more along the lines as an action RPG, or maybe even an action game with RPG elements. Semantics aside, it's one of my favorite games of the generation.
