Assassin's Creed 4 video comparison - PS3 vs PS4

Yeah its alright to look as a slight comparison, but if memory serve me right, I think just like AC3, Blackflag uses slightly higher res characters for the in-game cutscenes.

There are times in the video where I wonder if he confused ps4 footage with ps3 one though.

lol. I honestly couldn't tell the difference. Put it at 1080p like the video said. Maybe in person side by side I'd be able to tell.

Weird. I was surprised how much better PS4 version looked. Maybe that's because I expected to have similar reaction to yours...

Why is Criterion the only developer that has consistent image balancing between SKUs? The saturation is considerably different here. Contrast is off too.

Cross-gen launch game. Looks like they just update the textures slightly, improved the res, and said ship it!

Apart from the water in the ocean, PS3 version looks good. Although, frame rates will be shitty.

Seems to be a PS4 problem, at least according to Misterx:

lol jk, I have no idea - probably different gamma settings?

I hope that doesn't start happening again next gen. That was the most annoying thing about multiplats this generation. Especially when I noticed the color differences on COD.

Played it yesterday as I mentioned in this thread, and it didn't look next-gen at all to me.

Yeah, sure- if you compare the water side be side it looks better, but let's be honest: that PS3 water doesn't look like the best out there even for this generation.
It looked slightly more sharp then most games, but visually Beyond: two souls on PS3 looked better to me.

It makes me think "PC version of current-gen" ie better textures, higher resolution, a few better effects, but it, for all intents and purposes, doesn't feel like "next-gen".

next-gen AC4 isn't just about upgraded texture resolutions and whatnot, it's also about dynamic systems like the sea waves, dynamic foliage, volumetric lighting, individually rendered raindrops and stuff like that.

The differences will mostly be more subtle than straight up visual upgrades.

why does the PS4 version look washed out?

My guess would be that the PS4 part comes from a video, with a 16-235 color space, and the PS3 part from a capture in 0-255 mode (or the contrary, I'm too tired to think). So the blacks are gray on one side.

Then when there are not those subtle things in screen at least the frame rate should be way better, right?.

You don't happen to have any direct feed videos of both versions on gamersyde to make a better comparison, do you? :)

How consistent was the framerate in the final version? That's kind of the key. AC3 was a complete mess on PS360U with obscenely low framerates that typically stayed well under 30 fps. Regardless of how it looked, the poor performance was an issue.

If the next-gen version runs at a stable framerate, a higher resolution, and uses AF along with those extra next-gen effects it should look pretty nice overall. I feel as if some people have a more favorable memory of what AC looks like on the older consoles. It ain't pretty...
