Assassin's Creed 4 video comparison - PS3 vs PS4

Blimblim

The Inside Track
You don't happen to have any direct feed videos of both versions on gamersyde to make a better comparison, do you? :)

We do not have any next-gen console, and barely managed to get a Xbox 360 version of the game to review. So, no ;)

mp won't have all the fancy water though, unless they are adding ship battles, which i don't think they are.

from what i can tell this is suppose to be like killzone right?

30 fps sp

60fps mp
That's not how Killzone functions at all.

The game runs with an unlocked framerate in all modes but averages higher in multiplayer.

While that may be accurate, it's a little confusing to people, because the multiplayer runs basically the same as most console games that people consider "60fps". That is, it's 60fps, but it can drop under heavy load.

Shadows and aliasing surely look much better on the PS4 video but I really like the increased depth blur on the PS3 version although it's probably there to make up for the poor drawing distance. That said, it's not much of an improvement from this videos but it is also probably the worst footage to have for such a comparison.

Wouldnt judge too much on color. Different display settings on the OS. (rgb/ycbr)
And we sont know if the same video hardware was used on the systems and what codecs.

I hope that doesn't start happening again next gen. That was the most annoying thing about multiplats this generation. Especially when I noticed the color differences on COD.

Yeah why did the ps3 sometimes look washed out compared to the 360 with multiplats? Anyone know? Always been curious about that.

That´s because PS3 has less video memory (256MB). Xbox having unified memory pool allow to use more than 256MB of RAM for textures ( and other gpu rendering effects ).

There are times in the video where I wonder if he confused ps4 footage with ps3 one though.

Lol same here. I thought: "Oh, PS4 version has DOF"..... >.>

Not a massive difference. The PS4 version will run at 1080p and hopefully shouldn't suffer from a shitty framerate like past current-gen Assassin's Creed games, though.

It's a cross-gen title, from Ubi, releasing on 6 (or more?) platforms.
Don't expect higher quality assets on PS4, like characters or environments with much higher polys or tress or whatever.

The difference in IQ, however, is huge. Just look at the black dude's jacket straight after he walks upstairs.
Shadows are much softer, smoother and don't flicker like crazy on the PS4 (check 1:54 and 2:15 for instance).

Afaik Microsoft was using a custom implementation for gamma/colors on the Xbox 360, and many video comparisons do not have both versions at the same settings (gamma standard settings look different), which then results in one version being washed out. But you can change this in the settings menu where you can manually set gamma to a value which looks similar.

Single player is exactly the same, though. It can go all the way to 60 fps or drop to 30 fps (hopefully not lower) depending on the scene. It simply averages lower than multiplayer.

I wish they would have locked it.

Seems to be a PS4 problem, at least according to Misterx:

lol jk, I have no idea - probably different gamma settings?

I'm wondering if they have RGB set to Limited? It was the default setting on the PS3 and makes everything looks washed out.

Didn't the PS3 use to have that problem? You had to switch some option in the settings menu.

It's not a problem with the system, rather, a mismatch between the system settings and the capture settings. If you screw this up the colorspace will be incorrect and it will appear washed out.

Aside from the water, DOF differences and higher resolution, I'm not seeing a huge difference. To be expected I suppose.

As the Developer Diary vids have shown, the subtle details like lighting, particle effects, and a richer environment are the benefits of the PS4 version. There's only so much you can do with a game targeted to current gen systems.

I want this game and had planned to get it on the Wii U...until Ubisoft decided to fuck over the sales of that version by not giving it any DLC. Now that I'm seeing that the PS4 version doesn't look that great, I'm kinda lost as to which version I want. If any at all. I'm not big on supporting Ubisoft's shite decisions.

Stop it, man. Don't trust this guy. This video does not even BEGIN to demonstrate the actual differences between the two versions.

Again...

This stuff is actually implemented but you don't have an opportunity to see any of it in this video.

PS3 version looks better to me anyway since I sit far from my TV.

Seriously cut-scene being compared? ...

Textures look much better on the PS4 as expected and the water looks great in the background while the guys are talking.

I'm hoping, just like in previous years, that Best Buy has this as part of its Black Friday sale and I'll grab it at $34.99.

This should be 60fps easily, looks like they mainly added better texture and higher resolution. Hopefully the watchdogs delay can get the fps up though I doubt ubisoft is willing to put in the work.

PS4 looks way sharper, but washed out at the same time. PS3 is blurry as hell. The PS4 version seems to be missing some shadows.

But Killzone is Unlocked SP so 45+ (average) and from my understanding AC4 is 60FPS on next gen 30 current!

None of this stuff is present on PS3 and none of it can be seen in this comparison video for obvious reasons. This type of foliage is available in the PS4 version but definitely NOT on PS360U.

Yeah, the question is if the quality of everything else will be like in those gifs. Because besides engine and weather system there is much more there. I guess we will see it soon.

I would expect early next gen ports to be low effort. Even if this game was built on a PC, it still has to cater to the lowest common denominator. Will get better with each iteration.

If Joe Bloggs has this on PS3 and then goes round a mates house who has a PS4 he will wonder what is the point in spending three hundred and fifty quid.

Should be a nice game on PS360.

We can't pass any judgments on "vibrancy" here due to the questionable methods by which this Youtuber captured these videos. This is not a guy you can trust when it comes to accuracy.

None of these versions will be "natively" washed out. Whether it appears washed out will depend on variables that you can control, basically.

That won't the case, believe me.

Here, some pretty clear differences.

I'm assuming it's 720p native only on PS3 like previous AC, so that gives a pretty good example of what 1080p native vs 1080p upscaled can look like.

For the next two refer to the video for these bits as it's even more obvious in motion:

Aliasing

So yeah, it's not a generational leap and it was never going to be, but the differences in IQ are really big.

Looks good on PS4!

A bit off-topic but: did anyone else get their AC4 steelbook and map from amazon?! It looks amazing!

But single player isn't at 60 by default. It just variates depending on a bigger number of factors (you may walk down a corridor and it's 60, and then you go out in an open environment and it's probably 30-45). Multiplayer, from everything we've heard, is 60fps. That's the main framerate, but occasionally it will drop under heavy load (using their own example, if all 24 players in a match throw a grenade at the same time within your viewing distance on the screen). Don't most 60fps games have occasional drops? I never see those referred to as "unlocked variable framerate".

They could've at least bothered with nicer skin shaders for the PS4. The faces in this game look hideous.
