Investors have absolutely no confidence in Nintendo as a hardware manufacturer, hence the calls for licensing of their IPs.

Wow. Nintendo really needs to deliver on the hardware side next time, or they are done. WiiU is an absolute and expensive disaster without precedent in the companies history. 3DS's abysmal launch has only been recovered by good software and high cost to the company, yet sales are far from amazing.

Make appealing hardware (and importantly services) or get out, especially if you can't even make a profit.

Does Nintendo themselves think they can deliver? I am not so sure. External pressure might twist their arm into terrible decisions...

Fair

Personally, I'd like to hear about an integrated account system not tied to hardware.

People underestimate the value of this. It instills confidence and promotes loyalty. Confidence in nintendo is LOW. Buying games feels like a risk, not an investment.

I don't think you'll see Nintendo games coming to smartphones any time soon, but I think you'll see apps. Apps that are like little social "companions" to their actual games. Apps that somehow connect to data from a 3DS game, and act as little social "beacons" to get other people to buy the 3DS game.

For example, some kind of pokemon app on a smartphone that pulls data from your file in Pokemon. Anyone can download the app and see what their friends are doing, but you only really reap the benefits if you have the game.

Is this a good idea? Will it actually work as a marketing scheme aimed at smartphone audiences? I have no idea, and honestly, probably not.

It is an amazing idea and something they should have done LONG AGO. Thing is, without proper online services ( unified nintendo account), it is never going to be properly implemented.

Iwata is gonna have to take his failures on the chin and resign.

Wii U is a lost cause. They need to dip into the cookie jar and start R&D for something new or just shift the focus of their devs onto 3DS. 3rd party is not happening as long as they have that bankroll IMO.

Sony gets Metroid, Mario, Kid Icarus, Pikmin exclusives.

Microsoft gets Zelda and Pokemon exclusives.

If Steambox ever gets off the ground, they can have Sin and Punishment exclusives and the occasional Nintendo-published Silicon Knights title.

It will be great to play back-catalogue titles with trophies and achievements.

Well this is one way to make me completely flaccid after Apex's Smash Bros. hype.

The most interesting games of the year have begun. Let's see what Iwata has planned for the mid term. Clearly he can't rest on his laurels anymore in the home console realm and that "we can't compete" nonsense won't fly anymore.

2015: Nintendo gets bought by Microsoft
2016: Microsoft releases Kinect III bundled with 'Dance With Yoshi'
2017: Windows 9.1 releases, with exclusive access to the new Nintendo Online Game Shop, letting you buy classics like the Legend of Zelda for $12.99 that cross play with your PC and Windows Phone.
2018: Super Mario Bros Online comes out for Xbox One, requiring Kinect III.
I pray nothing like these every happen. That is why I disliked Nintendo being bought up by another company.

This is the opposite of what they will do. They will follow their market (kids and casuals) to where they are. Which is mobile, or hopefully simply a cheaper handheld and much simpler software at much cheaper prices.

And the die hard fans will follow Nintendo to the ends of the earth.

"This ipad Mario captures the essence of fun itself. I feel like a kid on Christmas day. The touch screen controls are perfect... of course it took Nintendo to make mobile gaming viable!"

Well, Iwata is a smart man. He's surrounded himself with his people, and consolidated his power in the company. I don't know how hard it would be to actually force him to step down.

Well, shareholders could refuse to re-elect him to his position as Chairman of the Board of Directors every year. But that doesn't mean he loses his job as CEO of Nintendo / Nintendo of America.

Last voting session results:

The terms of office of nine Directors: Satoru Iwata, Yoshihiro Mori, Shinji Hatano, Genyo Takeda, Shigeru Miyamoto, Masaharu Matsumoto, Eiichi Suzuki, Tatsumi Kimishima and Kaoru Takemura, will expire at the conclusion of this year’s General Meeting of Shareholders. Accordingly, the election of ten Directors is proposed.

Part of the reason for their predicted loss is an increase to their R&D budget for this year by 15 billion yen.

Please make the nightmares stop. Whenever people beg for Nintendo to go third party, I always remember what would probably happen.

Skyward Sword and DKCR are two notable examples of bad controls ticking off the diehards.

Until Iwata is removed nothing will change. The guy is all please understand and I'm sorry and then doesn't do shit to learn from his mistakes or fix them.

Valve + Nintendo is the answer

Best of both worlds, unmatched online services with unmatched first party development and franchises..

There is zero evidence this is the case but Iwata should send some strippers with knives to Gabe Newell immediately

The day Nintendo goes third party and spreads their IPs exclusively across different consoles is the day I quit video games. On my mothers grave. Fuuuuuck thaaaat noooise.

Well this is one way to make me completely flaccid after Apex's Smash Bros. hype.

Well I forgot about Smash Bros.

Smash Bros. would obviously be a multiplatform title. But how would they handle the distribution of characters? Would we see roster parity for both Xbox One and PS4? Or would we see exclusive characters? I.E. Samus Aran is only in the PS4 version and Toon Link is only in the Xbox One version?

Thinking about that now, this is the only thing that would make me sad if Nintendo went third-party. There are thousands of benefits to all gamers if Nintendo were to give up on consoles and go completely third-party (the biggest benefit of which is greater exposure of their franchises - more people will get to experience and appreciate their games).

However, if that turned into a world with platform-exclusive characters in a Smash Bros. game, it would not be worth it.

Yeap this. The "core" don't care about them, they're too busy playing 3rd party AAA games.

They need to get the kid audience back, and a regular handheld isn't going to do it. In the future they are going to be either forced to makes a phone or go 3rd party which terrifies me.

I don't really know of other ways they can get the young people back into Nintendo.

It seems like they need to fire Iwata to help regain consumer confidence and stem the bleeding.

That being said, I don't know who would replace him.

Last week Nintendo stock was sky rocketing while a few GAFers were saying they looked to be doing quite well with NCL stock. I wonder how many will have sold off their holdings by now.

They ticked off some people, but plenty of others claim those controls are perfect!

But you just know that if Nintendo does end up making mobile games, some people will claim the games are head and shoulders above other mobile games... whether it is true or not.

They can both audiences if they make the right moves to target both audiences with whatever plans they announce next.

What are the chances of Iwata getting booted out on the 30th?

Is it possible if it gets put to a vote? It'd be quite interesting to be in that meeting. Wish they'd broadcast instead of those slow, awkward directs! ha.

I wanna see Iwata beg for his job. He's been posting these losses for three years now + can't even build the necessary infrastructure for Nintendo's online services.

These two do not mix well at all.

Valve's consumer base doesn't buy games for more than 50 cents and Nintendo software never drops in price.

Good. Iwata still needs to kick rocks though. Every corporate shitstorm like this needs a fall guy.

So you don't think Iwata is responsible for the predicament they are currently in? That he didn't make some poor decisions? When I hear fall guy, I think of someone that isn't really responsible, and is taking the blame. Do you really think Iwata fits this bill?

Is Nintendo goes to start laying staff off? They are probably too big to live off of 3DS software sales.

they've been restructuring so it's easier to share assets between handheld and console games. it would probably be easier to just have everyone make handheld games.

i doubt this is going to be a result we see until their next handheld.

Last week Nintendo stock was sky rocketing while a few GAFers were saying they looked to be doing quite well with NCL stock. I wonder how many will have sold off their holdings by now.

A few sold stock while speculation was at a high (before the Q3 results, stock was high because of speculation for emerging markets / China news / major change).

But others are in it for the long haul / for the reliable dividends. Some are waiting for the stock to skyrocket on a possible announcement of mobile related stuff.

Regardless if Nintendo will actually make any money on mobile, the stock will perform well in response to Nintendo chasing the bubble.

I doubt the average consumer doesn't even know who the hell Iwata is.

Only thing I expect from a 'Panic' Nintendo is showing ANYTHING they have. Zelda should have been shown by now. Even a teaser of something. Nintendo can't play the secretive game anymore.

They really are in such a hole, though, as the Wii U only released a year ago and looks like it could tank completely. That's a ton of R&D money wasted, and a MASSIVE write-down on inventory, too. They probably have 6 million more WiiU already manufactured. A write down of even $100 dollars on each of those... Do the maths. It's not pretty.

On the other side, the 3DS has already peaked. It just had its best year of software yet sales are slowing, and it fell far below expectations. They do not have a new handheld coming out to remedy this. Therefore the 3DS will be far less able to offset the Wii U losses this year, and the Wii U losses will most likely be bigger, or the same.

Basically, when an investor asks this question of Iwata at the investor / strategy meeting:
'Mr. Iwata, what is your short term plan to ensure we do not suffer another two years of annual losses following the last three'
the point is that he will have no answer at all.

Is Nintendo goes to start laying staff off? They are probably too big to live off of 3DS software sales.

If anything they need MORE staff. Hardware is always ready, software is not. If they software had been ready, I bet the WiiU could have launched a year earlier.

They're having a really hard time because they just have no 3rd party support behind them.

I wouldn't buy an iPad for Nintendo games. Hell, an iPad costs more than the Wii U and 3DS put together.

I know what you mean. I'm not a fan either.

Everyone has their own doomsday scenario, but personally I couldn't think of anything worse than Nintendo teaming up with Apple.

Nintendo gives Steam some exclusive F-Zero/Star Fox/Metroid titles and in exchange, Nintendo sends one of their productive studios to get Half Life 3 developed as a Wii U exclusive

I thought the Wii U was a misstep, especially after finding out that it was under powered in some ways compared to 360/PS3, but never expected it to do this badly. When a new Mario can't even move units, you know Nintendo has dug themselves into a deep hole.

Thinking about PS4 and XB1 Smash Bros. has me incredibly hyped.

PS4 version is titled: "Smash Bros. vs. Sony." Includes 30 Nintendo characters, including Charizard, Link, Metroid, Mario, etc... (Nintendo roster parity with XB1). It will also include 30 Sony characters such as Drake's Fortune, protagonist from Last of Us (perhaps Joel with Ellie on his shoulder), Kratos, etc...

XB1 version is titled: "Smash Bros. vs. Microsoft." Includes 30 Nintendo characters, including Charizard, Link, Metroid, Mario etc... (Nintendo roster parity with Sony). It will also includes 30 Microsoft characters such as Marcus, Dom, Cole Train, Braid, Master Chef, the biker from Trials HD, etc...

Plus it would have achievements, trophies (a platinum trophy, best of all), online play, smart glass integration (on XB1), and game DVR.

This already happened several years ago but both companies were so secretive they never realized they teamed up with the other.
