PlayStation announces "Flex" a hardware leasing service in the UK

A PS5 (with a DualSense) is £10 a month. OK.

A DualSense Edge controller by itself is £6.50 a month. I don't think they'll have many takers for that one.

Next level gamespass.
This is more akin to Xbox All Access and it's never really worth it. Although having said that a PS5 for £10 per month in 2026 (with hardware prices being what they are now) isn't as bad as £21 per month for a bloody Series S, 6 years ago.

Xbox All Access ends with you owning the hardware when the term is up and it includes Game Pass, this is just leasing the hardware with no ownership.

I seen this on Twitter. Must be out of your damn mind. Who rents a fucking console?

Yeah but then you're stuck with an Xbox console.

I think Xbox did the same thing earlier this gen. They leased consoles which included game pass. I wonder what the uptake was compared to outright purchases.

An trivia for you guys: when Japan was devastated by the war, people had almost no money to buy anything but, like any human being, they wanted to have some kind of fun. That's when the modern manga appeared, being cheap to make, black & white and, more importantly, people didn't have to buy them, just lease. It was an way of making products for an economy that was completely destroyed.

This has nothing to do with this tho, the economy is soaring and people are certainly being able to buy everything, from consoles to PCs with lots of RAM. I don't know why I wanted to talk about it.

This shit always makes me think it exists purely to exploit low income households that can't afford to buy one outright, so they tempt them into even more debt/monthly payments ontop of what they're already paying out to try and keep up with everyone around them.

(Yes, I used that gif version on purpose)

Hardware trade value should be going up in the future with the way things are going.
I upgraded to an iPhone 17 Pro Max by trading in my old iPhone. My AT&T bill went up 3 bucks a month. (for 3 years).

PS5 should fetch quite a bit more than other consoles after 8 years.

All Access is a 24 month payment plan, this seems like a leasing rental service.

Rent for 1 month, buy and play through 2-3 games. Sell the games, end the rent after 1 month. Does not sound to bad.

Renting for multiple months without end is bullshit of course.

Classic uk ting tbh. Rinse the shit out of people. Dogshit union

Lol.

It has nothing to do with the UK. The only link is that this is a partnership with Raylo, who are a UK company that specialise in leasing tech. I'm sure there are similar companies in other nations.

This is just a (shit) option. Sony won't force this on people or increase the cost of the PS5 in the UK because of this.

Relax.

It's just another option. The wild overreactions are predictable.

I remember when you could rent a VHS player from Blockbuster back in the day. My family couldn't afford one.

I think more than for final customers, this makes sense for tournament organizators or other people who runs presential events like PR companies who make game presentation events, demo booth at events or stuff like that.

I think for final customers only makes sense for somebody who just wants to play a handful games and/or test the console before buying it.

btw: Wasn't this already announced some months ago?

Ah I see. Before it was another company doing it and now Sony does it direcly themselves.

I rented a Sega Genesis from a local video rental for my birthday when my parents could not afford at the time.

Rented the first PlayStation for myself when it launched from Blockbuster as well. Eventually got one the day after Christmas that same year with the money I saved up and asked for as gifts.

Oh the manufactured outrage. Who the fuck cares?

It's a service that allows people to rent a PlayStation console. 3rd party rental companies have been doing it with gaming consoles for decades. It's not like this is somehow being forced upon the gaming community.

Pricing is ridiculous. 36 month lease is £360. Might as well have just bought the thing.

Why would anybody lease something like this for 3 years straight? LOL!!! Isn't this best if you want to test out a console for a few months?

This seems like it may be similar to Apple's iPhone Upgrade Program, where you can either upgrade your phone annually and reset the payment cycle or keep your own and continue paying it off. WITHOUT INTEREST.

If that's the case, it's not bad. Low cost of entry for the customer and good customer retention for the company.

If there's interest, other fees/costs and/or you don't have the option of keeping your console at the end (seems like you do) then it's bad.

Think this kind of thing is going to be huge with the next gen, nothing about next gen sounds cheap.

Just to clarify, nothing about next gen sounds like impulse cash buy tier accessible for millions of dudes across the globe.

You will own nothing and you will be happy.

Quite honestly just keep playing with your PS4, it's the most sensible approach if you're tight on money and you still want a big catalogue of mostly cheap games.

Hey man, PS4 still slaps, awesome controllers too, if you can get one hardly used or new. Too old and you'll have to go get it cleaned out by a console repair guy or DIY.
