George Broussard on Xbox studio closures - "Likely to be the largest single layoff event in gaming history"

jfc, I just got word of a list of Xbox studio closures (no, not posting them). If it's even close to true (and it's from inside) this will likely be the largest single layoff event in gaming history.

Xbox is going to be supremely unpopular for a very long time and the devastation is going to reverberate like the meteor that took out the dinosaurs.

On top of all that there will also be layoffs at the studios that remain.
Sources are legit, known to me, and inside, but I'm happy to be wrong. All signs do point to it being a massive cut, maybe up to like 30% of the org, to circle the wagons around the mega brand ip and regroup from there. Who knows what the future plans are?

And look, this is really just all cold, hard, business. But a lot of people are going to get hurt and that sucks. In a terrible job market for games.

Much of this is paying for a lot of years of maybe mismanagement and unbridled growth at Xbox. But also if you're losing money and some studios don't earn, then I dunno...just very hard business calls. But I also don't really trust Microsoft to change ot be different/better in the future. Every regime change shakes things up, people pay the price and a new cycle starts.

Other divisions such as Blizzard, Bethesda and other first-party studios are also expected to be with "percentage layoffs," with one source familiar with the matter but not authorized to speak stating that this "is likely "the biggest single cut series for Xbox."

Goddamn, I can't fucking wait for this new movie franchise to take off

And now we know why Asha Sharma was made CEO. The "reset" that XboxXBOX is doing is less of a reset and more of a shutdown, and I think there could be far too many personal and legal reasons why Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond couldn't be part of it.

Seems like that Buckley quote about Asha, being brought in to "sunset" the Xbox division, may have more merit to it than I originally thought.

The Warning

Embracer holds the current record of around 8000 staff I believe.
And that's the reason why you don't really see the name 'Embracer' in back-to-back headlines anymore.

They are using the THQ branding for good will amongst gamers.

…And it's mostly working because they're making decent AA games that are being received well.

I mean, considering the cuts of entire studios that they're already known to be making, this isn't even slightly surprising that they'd be making layoffs even inside the studios they are holding onto.

And I hate the giddy tone of these social media leakers lol. It always comes across as them dancing around really happy that they're the ones who get the clout for getting the scoop on human suffering. Gross.

Bungie being cut in half was glorious, this is going to be several magnitudes more than that.

Can't wait for the fireworks. The more the Western AAA industry eats shit, the better.
Thousands of people are losing their jobs, but yeah, let's celebrate it because out of the 40 AAA games that come out every year they didn't make 1 you like.

And many people thought he was a hater and didn't understand the business anymore.

Absolutely zero clue as to what the point in buying a boatload of game studios when all they've done is sit on IP and close them down, starving their console of new games needed to keep it alive.

Precisely. No wonder her PR team told her to appeal to the diehard Xbox fans. Only fanatics will make excuses for her decisions; they've already started with the "It's all Amy Hood's fault and not Asha's."

You're seeing and going to see some of the same giddyness in here. Xbox ,the mega-corp, deserves the shit they're getting for years of bad decision-making. They've earned exactly where they are. It's unfortunate that alot of human collatoral damage is going to get caught in this tidal wave, and those people deserve to end up in a better situation( which the way this industry is headed, may be leaving it completely). This is a complete shit-show.

It's either the giddy tone of leakers having news first, or the giddy tone of those wanting Xbox to die/bow out of gaming, or the giddy tone of those who dislike AAA and the west, much like the gentleman above your post.

Guess this means they couldn't find buyers for any of the studios they were allegedly trying to sell, which is perhaps not surprising as few would be willing to commit to the salaries and benefits MS had been paying them, and probably none of them were willing to take large pay cuts.

My guess is they'd also be selling the employee contracts and not the IPs.

It's a brand that's lasted 25 years. And I been apart of all 25 as a spectator and overall gamer.

I don't think you can dissolve a brand image as big as Xbox, no matter that negative news whirlwind that's going on right now. And I as much I wouldn't want to see it, I think it's more than likely Microsoft moves in from it than just Xbox fading away and being sunsetted.

We honestly can't expect immediate results in a turnaround, but I think Asha has the right plan and motives in place.

Yet Asha still talked about acquisition so I wonder if this sort of move is to avoid allegations of monopsony down the line. In any case I hope MS don't buy anybody else to gut.

Totally agree. It's self-inflicted, and it probably needed to happen eventually but uh, idunno, for me a bunch of people who don't like Xbox to begin with on a forum going "good lol, fuck em" is different from some ghoul on social media being like "OOH it's gonna be so awful. No I won't tell you the specifics, but it's gonna be baaad. Remember you heard it from me first!" There's a line of bad taste being crossed there.

x-BOLD move from asha and co to create infamous legend

Ehh, well, I don't agree with the guy above my post either lol, but he's just here talking with us, he's not out there influencing. There's a difference imo.

He most likely doesn't care because he is looking at it through a social/cultural angle.

There are some people on this forum who actively want a collapse of the gaming industry because they want certain types of devs to be flushed out regardless of any collateral damage.

It matches the modern day spite-based motions.

"Hey Asha, what AA/relatively lesser budget gameplay trailers do you have to show in the Xbox Games Showcase?"

Asha: "We have Senua, which is Hellblade 3 renamed and State of Decay 3 to show."

"That's cool. Why are you showing them now?"

Asha: "To shut their developer studios down, next month."

Peak CEO and peak M$ behavior.

This is what the gamers want and these studios brought it on themselves. Poor management and a soft touch approach from Phil lead to gross incompetence and underdelivering.

Brutal though. Feel for peeps losing their job if they are decent devs

Just what happens when you send a retarded kid into a toy store and give him a platin card before.

Pray tell what's the plan? Why do you have faith in it when history tells you majority of the plans don't come to fruition/rejected by market?

I don't work for Xbox. I will say at the same time, the first half of its lifespan so far has been successful while maybe until 2014, Xbox has been a slow downward trend.

I honestly don't know what history you speak of as well. Care to enlighten me?

fwiw I do think that Xbox will survive, even if Microsoft does potentially try to sell or split it off. Assuming they're making the RIGHT cuts and they have a sensible plan (which ideally includes shutting down Gamepass completely) they might even be able to thrive again, eventually.

If these rumors are true then I predict that Xbox will massively shrink into a very, very safe corner of CoD, Overwatch, WoW, Elder Scrolls, Sea of Thieves, Halo, Minecraft, and Forza.

That's it. No more Doom. No Outer Worlds. No Dishonored. No Wolfenstein. No Quake. No Gears. No Killer Instinct. No Banjo. No new Rare I.P. etc.
