Damn, in retrospect, 2017 was a good ass fucking year.

I really, really...really wanted to pick 1997, so many gems, Fallout, Star Fox 64, Diddy Kong Racing, FFVII and so many more.

but 2017 was on some other fucking level of crazy releases.

Horizon, BoTW, Nier, Persona 5, Destiny 2, forgot about Cuphead, Nioh and Resident Evil VII coming out that year too lol

I was too young to be able to get and buy most games in 1997, was at the mercy at like my parents buying shit as i was like 11-12 years old or so. Also the year after 1998 were much better than 1997.

2007 was a fantastic year for me and not just for games but the games here was really good.

2017 was very mid but some good games.

Damn, PC gaming was dominating and destroying everything throughout the 90s. In excess of 30 stone hard classics alone, that created so many things we have today

halo 3, call of duty modern warfare, project Gotham racing 4 wins out any of the others easily
Then we got GTA IV the year after with some other banggers.

2007 was fucking major for games plus it hit the time just before the economy took a shit. Everyone lost their jobs and were just chilling.

Also, Diablo is a 1996 game, not 1997. There were a few different dates that went into 1997 due to shipping and stuff, but the game is 31 dec 1996. It even won Gamespot GOTY 1996

2007
Assassin's Creed
Bioshock
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Crysis
Forza Motorsport 2
God of War II
Half-Life 2: Episode 2
Halo 3
Mass Effect
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
Super Mario Galaxy
The Witcher
Tomb Raider: Anniversary
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

Nostalgia says 1997. But objectively? 2007 was just too important for modern gaming to ignore.

This year started 2 of nowadays biggest franchises: Assassin's Creed and modern day COD basically started with this entry.
Halo 3, one of the series best entries was released. God of War 2 closed the PS2 days with one of the series best entries. Crysis released and its visuals were unbeatable for years.
New IPs: Uncharted, The Witcher, Mass Effect and Bioshock started and became some of the most important ones for that gen. Some are still talked about to this day.
Tomb Raider: Anniversary was the best game of that trilogy and Tools of Destruction started the series best trilogy.

I mean...we're still relying on a lot of IPs that started this generation...and 2007 was probably one of the most important years in gaming even if it wasn't the best one.

Just my 2 cents.

edit: think about it this way: 2007 we were still getting PS2 games...and at the same time Crysis was released. It's weird to think these 2 released on the same year somehow.

2017 because right now recent memory trumps nostalgia. I also played more of the 2017 games in 2017 than the 97 games in 97.

Its tough but either 1997 or 2007.

1998 is the real answer:
Zelda Ocarina of Time
Metal Gear Solid
Resident Evil 2
Half life

Shining Force 3
Suikoden 2
Parasite Eve
Xenogears
Banjo Kazooie
F Zero
WCW/NWO Revenge
Tekken 3
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Marvel vs Capcom
Sonic Adventure
Soul Calibur
Crash 3

I remember playing GTA 1 in 1997. The game was so great back then.
The GTA series was an integral part of my life since then.

i'm going to have to say either 97 or 2007 as i played more of the games on the list as a PC only gamer, but only about 5 each, i'll chose 2007, now if it was 98 and 2008 it might be different.

2017 was pretty cool but man, that 1997 lineup is something else.

1997 easy I could double that list with games I loved that year

Klonoa: Door to Phantomile AND Armored Core came out that year!!!!

The 1997 list is missing a lot actually

2007 was good but not on 1997 levels of awesome

lmao@ 2017

2007 I enjoyed
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Crackdown
Crysis
Forza Motorsport 2
Halo 3
Pac-Man Championship Edition
Project Gotham Racing 4
Tomb Raider: Anniversary

This is tougher than I thought. I figured I'd click 1997 without hesitation but 2007 was a pretty damned decent year and so was 2017. In the end I still choose 1997 but I forgot just how many great games released in both 2007 and 2017.

1997
Star Fox 64, Castlevania SotN, Goldeneye, Final Fantasy VII, PaRappa, Blast Corps, Colony Wars, Diddy Kong Racing, Mario Kart 64, Fallout, etc.

2007
Mario Galaxy, Halo 3, Forza 2, Metroid Prime 3, PGR4, Pac-Man CE, etc

2017
Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey, Undertale, Nier: Automata, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Cuphead, Stardew Valley, Forza 7, etc
